Woah. I guess we're gonna find out if she learned how to sing over the last year!
I'm honestly pulling for her based on how she handled her crash-and-burn at last year's Shinden test. I'm also looking forward to see how much Nina has progressed.
Happy birthday Hello Pro Kenshuusei, or rather the overall H!P trainee programme!
20 years of:
- legends like Kitahara Sayaka, Maeda Irori, Okada Yui, The Possible, Up Up Girls and Kikkawa Yuu
- the great exodus of 2010 after a lot of girls realized they had no future in H!P
- the reorganisation into H!P Kenshuusei
- several questionable choices and probably broken dreams (Kaneko Rie, Tanabe Nanami, Tanaka Karen, Jang Da Yeon, Inoue Hikaru
- whatever that 2017 Shin Member Audition was lol
- groups like S/mileage/ANGERME, Juice=Juice, Kobushi Factory, Tsubaki Factory, BEYOOOOONDS, OCHA NORMA and the upcoming H!P KSS Unit that were made up completely or mostly of KSS
- 9/47 members of Morning Musume, 17/25 members of S/mileage/ANGERME, 11/18 members of Juice=Juice, 4/8 members of Country Girls, all of Kobushi Factory, 10/16 members of Tsubaki Factory, 9/12 members of BEYOOOOONDS, 8/10 members of OCHA NORMA
I will be honest, I think not every KSS can make it as an idol. But we found some real gems here.
Oh shit, I forgot about this. Did anyone stream it? Normally we expect the Best Performance winner to debut within the year, but the current state of the KSS is kid of odd with a unit of vets set to debut, and a bunch of really young n00bs, so I'd be surprised if Niina debuts before next year. I really want to see her performance, though.

Definitely check this out if you're interested in the KSS, because in terms of overall performance level, this is pretty good considering how new all of these girls are. [EDIT] I uploaded this to my YT channel, and UF seems cool with it, so here you go! Lotsa comments below.
With only two exception, all of girls improved from their assigned songs to their free-song performances. Toa can actually sorta carry a tune now, but choosing Furusato was -- how can I put this gently -- ill advised. UF set her up for success with "Skip Skip Skip," then she pissed it all away with a ballad that will reveal every flaw, of which she has many. Still, she's come a long way from 2023. The other who slipped a bit was the current KSS baby, Rua Hattori, who was merely very good on her second song instead of great like on her first. She's got legit easy power and solid pitch, but her energy on "Kiss me Aishiteru" was oddly low. I think she's an ace in the making, though.
I don't have any problem with any of the award selections, honestly, and I think a lot of these were won in the free-song round. Sugihara, in particular, looked like a different performer on her free-song. Nishimura was really good in all phases and not only had to go first, she had to watch everyone else perform twice before closing it out with an even better performance than her opener.
The star of the show, though, was Niina Hayashi. Guys, the surprise of 2023 has become a fucking monster. The baby-deer awkwardness is gone, replaced by a confident swagger, and her solid-but-raw voice is now polished, powerful and controlled. Since 2021 I've been taking notes while watching these, and this is what I wrote during her free-song round: "10. Hayashi Niina - Platonic Planet: LMFAO, she's so fucking good, ha ha!" Seriously, she could debut tomorrow and she doesn't turn 13 until next month. I'm not sure what I want them to do with her, but I think that I don't want her in the new group. Not sure why, though. I think I want her in J=J.
Morning Musume needs someone to even replace Sakura and I could see Niina being that girl who can eventually mature into a solid role of front girl. But they won’t. They very well could put her in the new group. They aren’t exactly a powerhouse of vocals. I doubt Juice will get her. Mifu hasn’t properly debuted yet.
This is a place where a signature goes. Enjoy some Airi instead.
Yeah, she's probably gonna end up in the new group, which might end up being for the best since it seems like when they debut groups in twos a year or so apart, it's the latter of the two that's more successful.

Okay, let's do this thing! So the name is giving me Stardust vibes for whatever reason, and maybe it's not actually Stardust but some other not-H!P/48G company, but yeah. What I'm really pumped about, though, is that Niina was not added, which means they're saving her for a legacy group, and with the flood of recent graduations her debut probably isn't too far away.
Even though our worries about H!P spreading itself too thin are legit, you can't help but be excited for a new group, or at least I can't.
Nina just turned 13 so she could do well in debuting in Morning Musume. They need another vocal powerhouse to take over once Sakura goes and she’s at the ripe age where she can grow with the group and not be thrown into an Ace role right off the bat because you still have other stars in the group.
I’d mention Juice, but with Mifu still not having debuted properly with a single, not sure they want to put her there only to overshadow Mifu.
Tsubaki is out of the question since they just got new girls.
Angerme seems possible but they are sort of in this lull where I don’t know if it would hurt or help her to be in that group.
Beyooooonds is in a state of flux. While they are moving, not sure what direction that is. Turn into a generational group or just leave them till they wither and the float off I to disbandment.
Morning Musume seems more plausible considering the overall age of the group and upcoming graduations.
If UF is even thinking of starting another KSS unit they need to stop. They have too many generational groups right now.
This is a place where a signature goes. Enjoy some Airi instead.
I think you're right that MM makes the most sense. Their top end is finally moving on, a trend that's likely to claim Erina this Winter, and while Sakura might last all of next year, she's not likely to last much beyond that, so they need to prepare for her eventual departure. And that's not even considering a surprise graduation of a younger member. I wouldn't be shocked if MM-specific auditions are announced before the new year, with Niina leading the ensuing 18th(!) gen.
There will most definitely be another audition announced probably this summer. They need another round of Kenshuusei if they are going to start yet another KSS unit that will eventually debut.
This is a place where a signature goes. Enjoy some Airi instead.
Updated the first post to reflect the changes. We're gonna need another audition pretty soon. But with so many of the younger girls looking to the toxic world of Kpop for inspiration (not that being an idol overall is a ray of sunshine and rainbows), will we ever be able to get some decent singers in the KSS ranks again? Unless you snatch'm young before they know any better.

Due to age Honoka is defacto leader, despite Yulia's longer tenure. Kind of like the Kirara situation. Overall their vocal talents are pretty terrible if the opening act performances are anything to go by. Good luck polishing this group. They are pretty much at the level of what Tsubaki Factory was when they debuted. I hated them. But I'm totally loving Tsubaki now, so hopefully a nice firm polish will result in a few sparkling diamonds after they find their groove.
Also, Soara is now the oldest trainee at 17, she'll be 18 in October. If she doesn't debut soon into a legacy group, she'll more than likely pack her bags and head on out the door.
And it's been pointed out, in probably the first time in the history of Hello!Project. Everyone in this video has officially debuted in Hello!Project.
You have all of Ocha Norma (minus the audition winners), Rosy Chronicle (Matsubara Yulia, Onoda Karin, Hashida Honoka, Murakoshi Ayana & Uemura Hasumi), Arisawa Ichika, Ebata Kisaki & Ishiyama Sakura from Juice=Juice, & Yofu Runo from Tsubaki Factory

Polishing them is one thing, for the other I sure hope Up Front has some management left to actually work with them. OCHA isn't doing *that* well promotion wise, Biyo is on the decline (though their recent single sold well), everybody else is busy with the 4 big groups. Tsubaki was more than lucky that they (according to rumours) got °C-ute's management, since °C-ute was one of the best promoted bands towards the end of their tenure.
Maybe the group is lucky and they get Sugai-sensei to work with them. But they need good songs and a good theme, ffs. Honestly, a horrible time to debut a new group, with basically all the main groups having to find a new vibe too, and OCHA still without a solid one. Considering that none of them can sing well once again I wonder if we really need to debut everyone if they just stick around long enough.

Not sure what she expected, she joined last year, basically already without any chance to debut if she wasn't rock solid in anything. She is really pretty, probably my favourite visual among the KSS, but geez we don't need more pretty girls in the current groups. They're all bloated and they already added fodder to Tsubaki. Worst case is they really add another sub-group to Biyo.
I think the Rosy Chronicle girls are hit-and-miss. I've seen KSS Unit 24 performances where I thought they were ahead of where OCHA was pre-debut, and other times where they're pretty bad. UF probably saw the same thing and that's why their debut was pushed back. I'll give UF the benefit of the doubt here, though, because I didn't think either TF or OCHA were ready to debut when they did, and they both ended up fine. My only issue with OCHA is their catalog is pretty spotty so far. They've got a number of really good songs, but what's their signature hit -- the first song you think of when you think of OCHA NORMA? It's probably Crouching Start, which is a good song, but compared to TF's first 3 singles, it's no Hatsukoi Sunrise, Shuukatsu Sensation, Waratte, Teion Yakedo or even Shunrenka. If Rosy Chronicle gets great songs, I don't think we'll care so much if they're not great singers right away.
Another thing I've been thinking is that the very un-H!P nature of the name Rosy Chronicle might signal that their sound will also be decidedly less H!P. We've seen this creep into some of the other groups already -- whether it be Kpop, 48G or Western pop influences -- and I wonder if they're just gonna go all in with RC.

Finally coming back to this, I forgot I never did thoughts on this
I think Hayashi and Nishimura were the best of the night for sure though I can't help wonder now why Shimakawa and Soma were chosen to join Rosy Chronicle (I didn't think neither did that particularly well). I would have maybe considered Asano and Miyakoshi moreso if it was just on vocal quality). Of course Meisa was dancing hard, but her voice is kind of unusual to me. The rest was kind of rough all over the map, Toa still the worst of the night I feel like and Rua while still baby young, fared better ironically lol.
Not too shocked at Kawano leaving KSS. She just turned 18 and, based on her two Shinden tests, hadn't improved all that much in the two years she was there.
