2011-2012 New Years Shows
Since Ap post a really biased and incomplete list over in the spam thread, let's have a real discussion about Kohaku and other year-end shows here.
Best Artist is already over, so we'll just go with what's left to come.
Kohaku 2011 Teams
Red Team - Girls
aiko (10)
Ashida Mana (first)
Ayaka (5)
Angela Aki (6)
Ikimonogakari (4)
Ishikawa Sayuri (34)
AKB48 (4)
KARA (first)
Kawanaka Miyuki (24)
Kanda Sayaka (first)
Koda Kumi (7)
Godai Natsuko (18)
Kobayashi Sachiko (33)
Sakamoto Fuyumi (23)
Shiina Ringo (first)
Shoujo Jidai (first)
Tendou Yoshimi (16)
Natsukawa Rimi (6)
Nishino Kana (2)
Perfume (4)
Hamasaki Ayumi (13)
Matsuda Seiko (17)
Fuji Ayako (16)
Matsutouya Yumi (2)

Wada Akiko (35)
White team - Boys
Akikawa Masafumi (4)
Arashi (3)
Itsuki Hiroshi (41)
Inawashirokos (first)
EXILE (7)
NYC (3)
Kitajima Saburou (48)
Go Hiromi (24)
Suzuki Fuku (first)
SMAP (19)
Sen Masao (16)
Tohoshinki (3)
TOKIO (18)
Tokunaga Hideaki (6)
AAA (2)
Nagabuchi Tsuyoshi (3)
Ishida Toshiyuki (4)
Hikawa Kiyoshi (12)
Hirai Ken (7)
FUNKY MONKEY BABYS (3)
Fukuyama Masaharu (4)
flumpool (3)
Hosokawa Takashi (35)
Porno Graffitti (10)
Mori Shinichi (44)
Yuzu (4)
L’arc~en~Ciel (5)
Hosts this year are Arashi and Mao Inoue.
Ok what, I thought ayaka went on hiatus. Is she already back? Also, Matsuda Seiko and Go Hiromi! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> I wonder if there's going to be some sort of nostalgic idol section. Seiko is a really strong addition to the girls team, since the only people that still give a shit about Kohaku are old people who will love her to death. But then again, Go Hiromi has the same draw.
I also didn't realize NYC has been around for 3 years already, damn. But it's weird that they were chosen to be on the show instead of HSJ or the other new group Kis-my-ft2 (Sexy Zone being obviously too new). Both young groups are weirdly neglected.
I can't believe this is Shiina Ringo's first appearance. It's weird that they add all these people who have been around forever AFTER the height of their career, but I think she's still a very strong addition to the girls team.
When lineups for more shows become available, I'll add them.

I was trying to be as objective as I could.
I'm interested in SNSD, Kara, Perfume and to some degree AKB.

I'm going to add in the FNS Kayousai, because that's one of my personal favorites. I feel like there's another end-of-year show, but can't recall others than the Best Artist and Music Station's Super Live. EDIT: and oh yeah, the records award show.

Re: 2011-2012 New Years Shows
Thanks for adding that one! FNS Kayousai has a much better lineup, and they usually do. I usually like Music Station Super Live too, but I can't imagine they'll have nearly as many acts and the last few years they haven't had any H!P.
That's really a shitton of acts. I wonder how they're all really going to fit o.o

Re: 2011-2012 New Years Shows
They'll shove Morning Musume with Dream Musume, there will be a medley and we'll all hate it because it will be old Musume songs and nothing new and then they'll all appear again and sing the Katsu song (and maybe if we're lucky, some other H!P acts) and that'll be it.
I think Johnny's has a special concert every year don't they? I don't know enough about the groups but I always see it mentioned in Kohaku threads every year.

Yes, the Johnny's Countdown. But there's no need to list the participants for that one - it would be like saying "Here's who's going to be at the winter H!P concert."
Although the last few years it's been weird. Johnny's Countdown starts just before midnight, so there are usually a small number of songs done, then the countdown, then the show really begins. Kohaku ends at midnight, so anyone there for the entire Kohaku will be late to countdown. That's why most JE groups used to never appear on Kohaku. SMAP never goes to Countdown, apparently because they're so popular no one would be able to get tickets but SMAP fans (yet Arashi still goes). Then on top of that, due to some variation on the work law for minors (I thought the cut off was much earlier), the new super young groups can only come out for the first bit and spend the rest of it cheering from the audience. On top of THAT, the last few years JE has been giving practically every group their own New Year's concert, so all of the fun (groups interacting with each other) is taken out of it. For the people who actually go to Tokyo Dome to see it, it's probably pretty weird because they only see the footage from other groups on view screens. On TV there's lots of cutting back and forth.
Last year KinKi had their own show, Kanjani had their own show, Tackey had a show with an old senpai as guest, and Arashi were late because of Kohaku. HSJ had to sit out most of the show. So hey everyone, enjoy TOKIO and News-minus-Ryo hanging out, they barely know each other! Kat-tun is going to sing some hard rock songs that don't blend at all, have fun.
This year there are two new groups (one entirely minors), two "new" soloists, and T&T were resurrected from the grave, so maybe it'll be interesting. There hasn't been any notice yet on the set up.
That is a lot about the Johnny's Countdown that probably no one cares about.

Re: 2011-2012 New Years Shows
More then I ever knew! I wish H!P would do something, considering they've been banned (not really) for life from ever performing another Kohaku. But considering their New Years concert starts on the 2nd I guess I should be happy there is that.

Just to clarify, KinKi hosted last year's (10-11) show. They were away at the Kyocera Dome in 08-09 (that concert - minus the countdown footage - is in their KinKi You DVD set). I wish those two wouldn't look so bored at Countdown. :-/
Kanjani is again at Kyocera this year, so it'll be another Tokyo/Kyocera collaboration. Kis-My-Ft2 are all past 18, so they'll stay for the whole ride, and that looks to be the same for HSJ (except for Morimoto, whose existence in HSJ is currently debated).
Actually, while we're at it, let's discuss child entertainer laws! JE seems to flaunt it, since their only restriction is anybody over 18 can stay. On the other hand, AKB48 seems to use two tiers - anyone below 15 (16?) has to leave before 9, and anyone below 18 before midnight (I think). H!P just keeps it simple: before 9pm for the minors. I'm just confused with which laws they're invoking. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

The years are all blending together for me. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I just know the last few years it's been weird with people all over the place. My favorite KinKi moment at any countdown was...07 I think? One of the periods where Tsuyoshi's face had ballooned out and he spent the majority of the countdown looking high. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Nooooo Kanjani is the one group aside from Arashi that I really wanted actually in Tokyo. They always are really funny interacting with the others.
It's Sexy Zone that'll have to sit out at least some of it. Nakayama Yuma of NYC is also under 18, so if they're going to perform they'll have to go early.

This has always confused me. Shouldn't there just be...one law everyone follows? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nfused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

We've got a Music Station Super Live Lineup!
Lady Gaga (!)
SMAP
Arashi
Fukuyama Masaharu
Ayaka
AKB48
EXILE
Shoujo Jidai
Nishino Kana
Perfume
KinKi Kids
Yuzu
Ikimonogakari
aiko
JUJU
Porno Graffiti
Kimura Kaela
V6
YUI
KAT-TUN
Kuraki Mai
Tohoshinki
KARA
Kanjani8
TOKIO
Koda Kumi
Saito Kazuyoshi

Hey! Say! JUMP
Kis-my-Ft2
Not all that different from Kouhaku, actually. Basically they just added in the JE groups that aren't at Kouhaku due to Countdown and like two other people. AND LADY GAGA! I'm actually pretty excited about that as long as she does something other than Born This Way. She can do a little Born This Way but it needs to lead into basically anything else ever.

I picked this up at your suggestion from the Japanese video store and I watched the first half. Is there a tracklist anywhere? (I googled but didn't find anything.) There are lots of groups/performers who I really should know, but are i.d'd only in Japanese, so I'm at a loss to identify them.
It was interesting to see AKB48 act as back-up to Speed and to see Yossi and Rika share the stage with AKB48.
Thanks.

Am I reading this right? Ben E. King? The guy who sang "Stand By Me" back in the 70s? While having foreign artists isn't new, I can't really recall any in the past few years. Other than that, there's a lot of groups performing that I really like (which is to say, JE through the years), and there's a lot of old pop singers, like Yakushimaru Hiroko and BB Queens (they did the OP for Chibi-Maruko chan). And obviously, H!P is there. So this seems like a great show to watch. They'd better not disappoint!

Thanks.

I'll get something up, ideally before the New Year's.

I just finished disc 2 and, yep, that's Ben E. King all right. And he sings "Stand by Me," which he first recorded in 1960, over 50 years ago!
He's joined by two Japanese singers, who do a credible job with the English lyrics.
I assume they're Ai and JuJu.
They're then joined by a group of singers:
Whom I assume are "Voja"
This concert is listed on IMDB, but the cast list gives all seven members of Berryz. I didn't see a single one of them in it.
Unless they were backups in the balcony for a group number at the beginning that featured seven members of Dream Morning Musume.
I spotted Mai Satoda and Makoto Ogawa up there...
And I think these are Koharu and Ai-chan:
But there are four on the top who we never see clearly enough:
...and a few others.
But none look like anyone from Berryz.

Re: 2011-2012 New Years Shows
Technically, the "Ai wa Katsu" performance was done by the "Ai wa Katsu Singers" which is essentially everyone in UFA - aka Dream Morning Musume, all of Hello! Project, Kikkawa Yuu, KAN (the guy who sang the song originally) and a few old people no one cares about. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... lesson.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lesson:' />
They were supposedly all there (and have even shown us pictures of them in the outfits to prove it), but even in super HQ I couldn't pick out more than what you've just shown in your caps.

Speaking of Dream Musume, they'll be on the CDTV Premier Live, once again shafting Morning Musume! And don't tell me they can't be on! It's running till 5 in the morning, no one says the little ones can't be up at the ass crack of dawn!
This is a place where a signature goes. Enjoy some Airi instead.
Re: 2011-2012 New Years Shows
I seem to be the only DownTown/Gaki no tsukai fan on this board, but here's what the boys will be up to this hogmanay !
(OP doesn't say anything about "music only shows" =P)
This year they will battle it out on A WHOLE FREAKING AIRPORT.
That's right.
General info source: http://natalie.mu/owarai/news/59796
Press-conference: http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzM2MTg2NjY4.html
More info if you want to get some general stuff spoilered (thanks to wingslats from www.gaki-no-tsukai.com):
- This is now the 6th No Laughing Training Series out of Police Academy, Hospital, Newspaper Agency, Hotel, and Spy.
- The Game was filmed at Ibaraki Airport (north east of Tokyo...it's a hub for low cost carriers flying into the Tokyo area...so it actually does get busy).
- For the first time in years, they filmed in good weather and there's a backdrop of wonderful fall weather throughout the shooting.
- The cast will undergo training to become flight attendents for the Gasu Kurobikari Air System or GAS for short (this is a pun off of JAS or Japan Air System).
- As always, we'll be seeing many famous comedians, actors, actresses, politicians, culturally influential people, and athletes try and trip up our Fab 5.
- It took over 400 people to complete the filming
[spoiler2]
The show progression from start to finish/more information:
There is a bus ride involved to getting to the airport.
A famous actress will welcome the 5 to the training center.
A famous talento will give a welcome to the 5 that will leave any traditional flight attendent's ear's burning.
The trainees will be kept on alert with various traps in the break room.
A famous actress will give them quite a welcoming at the medical examination room.
There will be a number of laugh traps at the New Trainee Welcome Ceremony
The 5 trainees will play a game against flight attendant trainees from a rival airline.
There will be (another) Comedian Appreciation Competition (think back to the Hotelman batsu)
At the check-in counter, a number of famous people will....
Ditto ditto at the security check!
"That" comedian will be working at the airline call center handling customer complaints...
Something will happen at the Airline Union's negotiation meeting
There will be a blacklisted customers meeting (where they'll talk about embarrassing things famous comedians have done)
There will be another "No Getting Scared" portion of the show.
[/spoiler2]
Just let me pretend other people on this board care about the best comedy duo in existence. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />

Well...I don't have to say anything about "music only shows" because this is the Music Chat section. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
But I will allow this because Gaki no Tsukai is the greatest show ever. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' />

Re: 2011-2012 New Years Shows
Does anyone know how to access a tracklist in English for the FNS Music Festival?
I found one in Japanese on the Fuji TV website, and I have a separate list of the performers in English, but I'm eager to match names with the actual acts as I watch.
Here's the Fuji TV link:
http://www.fujitv.co.jp/FNS/index.html
Thanks.

Re: 2011-2012 New Years Shows
Wow, you're the greatest, TnB! That's fantastic.
This is the first of these all-star music shows I've ever watched. It's opening up a whole new world for me.
I got thrown off by seeing three different names for Girls Generation in different lists (Shoujo Jidai and SNSD were the other two names).
When BoA came on with Mai Kuraki and Kana Nishino, I kept identifying the wrong one as BoA. I had to look up the other two to figure out that BoA wasn't either of them. And I know what BoA looks like. I swear, Mai Kuraki looks very similar to how BoA used to look! Besides, I'd never seen BoA with such dark hair before.
I did guess right as to which one was Hiroko Yakushimaru, an '80s idol, even though she didn't really look like her most recent pic on Google. But I loved her performance.
Thanks.

Yeah, I find this really annoying about Korean groups. They change their name for each different location they go to. SNSD is an abbreviation of their Korean name, Shoujo Jidai is the Japanese translation, and Girls Generation is the English translation they use because English is cool and all that. I suppose its nice that they try to localize for the general masses, but I find it more confusing. It's the same with Tohoshinki aka DBSK aka TVXQ.

Re: 2011-2012 New Years Shows
I have a question about the opening number, "Ai wa Katsu," in the FNS Festival, the one featuring seven members of Dream Morning Musume and the senior UFA artists.
I managed to identify Chisato Moritaka...
and some of the others, but I can't identify these singers:
Anyone?
Thanks.

Lovely as ever. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/wub.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Hope she releasing a new album or something in 2012.
Tanimura Yumi
Kato Noriko? She cut her hair it seems. She was part of the 90's idol group Sakurakko Club with Oyama Anza
Takayama Gen, remember him?
Re: 2011-2012 New Years Shows
Thanks, Aisasami.
Gen Takayama crossed my mind at some point but I forgot to google him to check.
If that's Noriko Kato, she looks much better here than she ever did. I did think it was her at first, but when I googled her, none of the pictures that came up looked like the woman here.
I never heard of Yumi Tanimura.

Here's another singer in the FNS lineup who's unidentified in the track list:
Anyone know who she is?
She performs a number here with singer-guitarist Koichi Domoto and keyboardist Noriyuki Makihara.
Thanks.

Who wins Johnny's or 48s. Put them together and you get yourself either a small country or the entire population of a town. Neither one of them sang live though.
This is a place where a signature goes. Enjoy some Airi instead.

I think that's Watanabe Anne. She's Ken Watanabe's daughter. I knew her because she was a model in one of my favorite magazines. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' /> Maybe one day she'll be in Western movies as well?

Re: 2011-2012 New Years Shows
Wow, good call! I just googled her and she looks so different in her modeling pix. In fact, she looks so different from one pic to the next. There's a picture of her with Alicia Keys. But when I googled her with "FNS," I got one site that listed her as a guest and another that listed her as a performer in the number I got the screen cap from, so I'm guessing that's confirmed. I'm totally intrigued by her.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Part 1 of my coverage of the FNS festival is up on my blog. I've become totally obsessed with it. There's so much great stuff in it that's new to me...
