Suugaku Joshi Gakuen Ep 09 sub

Post by aine »

Just a friendly reminder, the project was, is, and will remain open to everyone who wants to contribute. Although I do realize that it's difficult to outdo the Al & masa dream team. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
The premise of this thread is that you (yes, you!) can add any lines or make corrections wherever you wish, even if it's just one line. To put it one way, it's like the collaboration that goes on on a wiki, but without the wiki software. Or to put it another way, it's like the collaboration that'd go on on open source software.

There are [/will be] a lot of holes, but every little bit helps and I'm asking everyone here to expand this if they can. Don't worry about timing anything; we'll do that later. The timestamps on this are just rough guidelines to show where in the episode the lines should go.

I figure that the number that can half-ass understand what's going on is somewhat high, at least much higher than the number of people who have a full understanding and are able to take the time to do a full translation.

Just a few guidelines to make the process smooth:

- If you edit your previous post to correct the translation, mark it either by bolding the new version or striking out the old one. This will help update the timed script without missing anything.

- If you're planning to spend more time translating a longer section of the episode, make a post saying which times are you covering (eg. 2:30 - 6:00) so someone doesn't double your work at the same time. Once you're done edit your post and paste the translation.

- If there's a longer gap between the dialogues, insert a new timestamp.

- If you're skipping one line in the middle of an otherwise translated dialogue, make sure to mark it (a bunch of "???" or "..." will do).

- For now, do not mark who says what unless necessary, it makes inserting the lines into a timed script harder.

- When you spot a mis-translation, correct it!

- Focus on getting the meaning accurate, don't worry if the translation becomes too wordy or awkward. Editors will fix that.

- Enjoy, because you're awesome for contributing even one line.
Plan for today's lesson:

1. Keep checking the general SJG thread where someone will hopefully post yt links after the show airs.

2. As Al suggested, create a quick and dirty translation of the whole episode. This is the stage where everyone is especially welcome to contribute.

3. Once that's done, Al goes over the script and rewrites it if necessary.

4. In the meantime, translate the complete opening credits. I know that majority of the names are the same from episode to episode, but as they keep moving them around having them all written out makes typesetting much easier.

5. Also translate the signs. I'll post a collage of signs requiring translation once I get my hands on the episode, but feel free to use common sense in determining what may need to be translated in advance of that.

Mentaiko-smelling bitch!

0:03

Please stop fighting!

0:04

You still haven’t told us what you’re doing here.

You weeds.

0:07

Oh, I get it!

0:09

I didn’t notice it at the time, but I far prefer the laughing face you’ve had since you met them.

0:13

Stop right there!

Give Sayu back!

0:16

Sayuri is within one of those rooms.

0:19

Classroom C!

0:21

Here I go!

You found me!

Of course!

0:25

This battle is Nina’s victory!

0:28

Good luck then.

0:56

Was that… Really my big sis?

No… If it was really my sister she would have said something to me…

But surely it was…

Ah, dammit, I don’t get it!

It’s just going to make me crazy. I’d better forget about it.

Seriously, I’m saying it’s really awesome!

You should read it to the end!

Hey!

Look!

Look!

Don’t you want to read it?

We get it!

Really?

It’s super interesting!

Nina-sama~!!!

Save us from her~

What’s up?

Nina should listen too!

This novel I’m reading… It’s so romantic!

1:41

A story about a worldly master thief…

And a sheltered princess.

The detective’s final speech is so amazing!

“He stole something unspeakable from you…”

“It was… Your heart!”

Yeah, but Mami would fall for something lame like that.

What do you mean?

All you ever read are mystery novels, so you’re completely clueless when it comes to romance, aren’t you?

I know all about being in love…

Really?

You should be the one to talk! As far as I’ve heard, you’ve never had a boyfriend either, have you?

I…

Um…

It's not that I don't want a boyfriend…

I just can't get one!

No! That's wrong!

Ha! I knew it!

You’re wrong!

Mami’s the one learning all about love from a book!

If I wanted to… I could get a boyfriend at any time!

Could you now?

I totally could!

Ah, give it up, you two!

Girls sure are powerful.

2:55

Ready? I’m going to read the next good part!

“He stole something very precious… It was your…”

Good morning, everyone!

Good morning.

Hey!

Hey, hey, hey! He’s good looking, isn’t he?

Yeah.

Mami, what do you think?

Mami?

It couldn’t be…

Okay, starting today he’ll be student-teaching in our class. Imawaka-sensei!

Good morning! I’m Imawaka.

I’m happy to meet all of you. It’d really make me happy if you’d call me “Waka-sama.”

Waka-sama is it?

Nice to meet you!

This is…

This is, this is…

A huge case!

My heart… Has been stolen!

5:05

And that’s the connection between complex exponential functions and trigonometric functions.

Okay, we’re done here for today.

Stand! At attention! Bow!

Imawaka-sensei!

Waka-sama…

I’m… Mami Shibuya.

Mami-san, is it?

I’m rooting for you! Good luck with your student-teaching.

Thank you.

I did it! What a case!

Why didn’t you confess to him?

No way no way no way!

Not “no way!” You can do it! We’ll be rooting for Mami!

I can’t believe it. They’re almost acting like normal girls…

6:07

Hey, hey! Did you hear about the new student teacher?

I heard! He’s really hot!

I’m jealous! I hope he comes to the first year classes.

Meeting new people really makes you heart skip a beat, doesn’t it?

Yeah!

6:22

The eastern building is all clear!

Western building, all clear!

Commander, we’ve finished our patrols!

We salute Commander Mami’s love!

Salute!

6:46

Student teaching, eh?

It's the same as when I was a student.

He wasn't even that attractive, but the girls were all fawning over him.

Waka-sama’s pretty good looking.

Well if he is, then I guess it's natural for girls to act that way.

Oh yeah… I saw my big sis here the other day.

Your older sister?

But I think I was mistaken…

If it was her, she would have said something to me.

I guess so.

I was just seeing things…

I’m gonna go eat some tonkotsu!

7:31

Ah, those supplementary lessons are tough…

Huh? Waka-sama!

Cool as always, isn’t he?

What’s he doing?

EHHHHHHHH!!!

He was just peeping up her skirt, wasn’t he?

8:23

If I tell them Waka-sama is a peeping Tom, they won’t believe me, will they?

Especially because Shibya-san is in love with him…

But… I can’t just do nothing…

That’s it! I’ll have to be brave!

8:41

Okay! How’s this?

Go!

Sensei! Use calculus to calculate my-love-for-you!

Wah! Too cute!

Nina! Try it! Try it!

My turn!

Hey!

I need to say something to you guys.

We’re busy, get out of here!

I’m gonna do it now!

Okay!

The least common multiple for sensei and I is… Love!

I can’t do it!

Yes you can!

I’ll try…

Sensei’s feelings… Are under arrest~!

Nope, she can’t do it…

So lame.

I can do it!!!

Sayu, go again!

9:23

I don’t get what’s going on, but they look like they’re having so much fun.

I can’t tell them. There’s no way I can tell them…

But… But…

Nina, go again!

Here I go!

HEY!!!

What a pain…

Just listen to me for a moment!

Well why didn't you say so before?

9:43

Say that again!

I… I said… that Waka-sama is a peeping Tom.

What are you talking about? Are you an idiot?

Oh, I get it! You’re jealous of all the attention Waka-sama is getting!

Of course they don’t believe me…

Let’s go.

If they don’t believe me, he’ll just take advantage of them.

Hey, wait a second!

It’s true! It’s all true!

I saw it yesterday… At the bus stop! Waka-sama ducked down like this! And while he was pretending to tie his shoes, there was a woman standing next to him! And he pulled out a mirror and peeked up her skirt with it!

Stop lying about him!

Kazuki… Did that really happen?

Wait! Stop thinking like that!

But… Kazuki is completely spineless masochist, spectacularly stupid, and he’s an indecisive coward!

But… Kazuki’s not the type to ever tell a lie.

Should I be happy about that? I guess so…

What does Nina-sama think?

Hmm… I’m not sure if I get the situation, but as far as my henchman is concerned…

He’s a masochist, gutless, he sucks at everything, and he’s an idiot, but he doesn’t tell lies.

You didn’t need to say those things a second time…

I’ve heard enough…

Sayu… You’re trying to steal my Waka-sama away from me. That’s your plan, isn’t it?

Huh? What are you talking about?

You’re the worst! You just can’t stand to see other people happy!

That’s not it at all!

What is it then?

If you’re that jealous of me, why don’t you start going out with Kazuki?

Huh? Why the hell would I go out with a masochistic, spineless, absolutely stupid, totally worthless idiot like him?

Three times is enough!!!

Either way, since Sayu put him up to this, that makes you my enemy, you delusional idiot!

Delusional? I’m the cutest girl in the world!!! You’re just as bad! Boring Little Miss Perfect!

Don’t do this because of me! Please stop fighting, you two!

I’ve had it!!!

I’m also done with the whole stupid situation!

11:53

Okay, next… Harada-san, please read.

Yes, sir.

(I’m not going to translate what the girl is reading since it’s just background noise. If someone else would really like to, go ahead, but it’s just boring math textbook stuff)

12:26

Looks like it’s fun time…

Was he just…

What were you looking at? Because of you, my fun time was ruined.

Okay then. Mami-san. What’s the Laplace transform of e to the power of ax?

Um… Uh… p cubed, isn’t it?

You’re totally wrong! It’s 1/(p-a).

He didn’t ask you, Sayu.

Waka-sama gave us the answer earlier. Ah, did I do something wrong? I just wanted to listen to his sweet voice, didn’t I?

Stop! Don’t say things like that!

You’re just drunk with love, aren’t you? Mami, who only knows about love from reading novels.

Sayu, you really want a fight, don’t you?

Girls sure are scary…

Hey, hey! It’s not good to fight.

It looks like what my henchman said was right. Waka-sama is a dirty peeping Tom. But…

14:23

I did it! What a case!

Sensei’s feelings… Are under arrest~!

If I say what happened, will Mami believe me?

She’s so blinded by love, I don’t think she’ll listen to me.

But, but… If I don’t tell the truth, he’ll take advantage of her!

Mami! My henchman was telling the truth!

Waka-sama is a damned peeping Tom!

15:04

Mami! My henchman was telling the truth!

Waka-sama is a damned peeping Tom!

Why are you saying this now, Nina?

Now just wait a moment… I’m a peeping Tom? Be serious.

He’s right. Stop with your stupid jokes!

But I saw him!

Before, Waka-sama was…

Trying to stick a mirror under your legs!

A mirror?

Mirror?

What are you talking about? I don’t have any mirror. You must have seen something else.

Nina… You know I’m your best friend, but I can’t believe what you’re saying.

She’s right.

If you keep slandering Waka-sama…

I’ll be forced to arrest you!

There they are. The Mami-cuffs.

“Arrest?” But you’re not a police detective, Shibuya-san!

16:27

What are you doing, Nina?

Nina…

If Nina’s lying, you can go ahead and arrest me!

Go ahead and take me to the police station!

But Nina really wants Mami to believe the truth!

She really means it this time.

I understand. Please tell me what happened.

Your plan was to stealthily stick a mirror underneath Mami’s legs.

I already told you! I don’t have any mirror!

Besides all of that, even if I were ducked down there, how could I even see her panties if she’s sitting down?

Of course you couldn’t.

But, Waka-sama… You’re a teacher! When you call on a student to answer a question, they stand up.

So when Mami stands up to answer, you could look at her panties all you wanted!

Of course!

She’s right…

No… No way…

Show us the mirror!!!

You pervert! Pervert!

Show us!!!

18:07

I knew it…

Nina-sama was right!

No, I just use it to check my appearance.

You just told us a minute ago that you didn’t even have a mirror!

You’re not going anywhere!

Mami has to be in shock right now…

Because of that, will she believe us?

Waka-sama…

Shibuya-san, you still believe me, right?

So this is the harsh inevitability of being a police officer, isn’t it?

Huh?

This once I need the heart to do it, but I can’t bring myself to capture him…

But you’re not a police detective!

It hurts, doesn’t it?

I don’t want to be forced to arrest you.

But…

But…

This is the path I have chosen to walk!

How many of those things do you carry?

Tsutomu Imawaka. At 1:23, for the crime of peeking at my panties, I’m placing you under arrest!

No! You’re wrong about me! I was just… Please believe me!

You just don’t know when to give up!

If you want to talk, you can do it down in the principal’s office.

Goodbye… My first love…

So it was her first love…

Salute for Commander Shibuya’s lost love.

Salute!

Everyone… Thank you.

Yeah.

21:11

Mami sure has bad taste in men.

I'll introduce you to some better guys.

That man was the absolute worst!

It was kind of creepy, watching him talk about his crimes.

It’s good that we were able to see what he was really like.

But it’s got to be a shock. Finding out someone you like was like that.

Yeah, I guess…

Cheer up! Soon we'll be changing classes! You don’t need guys when you can have fun with us!

You’re right!

Okay, let’s go have some fun!

Yay!

Girls sure are amazing, bounding back after that… But shouldn't she take off those handcuffs?

21:53

How sad that they don’t suspect a thing.

You all have no future.

22:02

How is everyone? Math-loving Nina here!

Nina-loving Sayuri Tachikawa here!

So today’s character introduction is:

The school’s new student teacher, Imawaka, but…

People aren’t really looking forward to learning about this guy, so…

That’s right!

So we’re going to tell you about cute Mami Shibuya now.

Right! So today we’ll talk about her love life!

Okay! When Mami was in the 3rd grade of elementary school, she confessed to a really cool boy named Takashi.

Wow! What else?

But it turns out that Takashi was a pervert that was caught licking the girls' recorders in the music room! So of course when she found that out her heart was broken!

And that’s scarred her since then.

That’s why she hasn’t tried to get a boyfriend since then.

And after Imawaka this time, it looks like Mami’s just attracted to strange types of guys…

It's not p−1/a; it's 1/(p-a). I believe these are ambiguous in spoken Japanese, but 1/(p-a) is what you get when you take the Laplace transform of e^(ax):

F(p) = L{e^(ax)} = int_0^∞ e^(-px)*e^(ax) dx = int_0^∞ e^((a-p)x) dx = [1/(a-p) e^((a-p)x)]_0^∞ = 0 - 1/(a-p) = 1/(p-a)

It's not that I don't want a boyfriend…

but that I can't get one!

Um, ( mistake / a slip a tongue… )?

What did I say!

You're wrong!

Sayu 作らないんじゃなくて、

    作れないの!

    あれ? 逆…?

Mami ほら、やっぱり。

Sayu ホントに違う!
I'd go with

"It's not that I don't want a boyfriend;

I just can't get one!

Eh? The other way around...?

See? Exactly.

No, that's totally wrong!"

I changed the math problem and the parts at 1:41 and 21:11, but I can't see the difference/what's wrong with the meaning of my translations at 6:46 and 9:23, so someone else can try them.

He wasn't even that attractive, but the girls were all fawning over him.

Who is "he"?

If "he" is not Imawaka, it's no problem.

9:23

Well why didn't you say so before?

Kazuki once tried to say but it ended in failure.

Since they’re having so much fun, they don't want to be interfered by Kazuki.

"He" is the student-teacher that Risa was talking about when she was still a student, not Waka-sama.

"Why didn't you say so before" is like a joke answer. They knew Kazuki wanted to talk, but they ignored them, but once he got excited they listened to him. I think it will still work for the situation.

Only a few signs to do this time, yay.

I tried enhancing 4. to make it more readable, but it's ok if you can't do this one.

Al and masa, could you double-check the above and let me know if I can add it the way it is? Thanks. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... smooch.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='=3=' />

It seems fine. I think Masa got it from the wiki about it and KS would know far more about the concept than me.

As for the signs:

1. top- City Bus bottom- Machida Math Academy Stop

2. Sensei I love you

3. Waka-sama

4. Imawaka-sensei

The translation seems no problem.

The timing to add sub is below.

Okay, next… Harada-san, please read.

Yes, sir.

In functional analysis, the Laplace transform is one type of mapping within the function space defined by integrals.

It went up just now~

Thanks for your work guys, as always. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

This episode had some 100 dialogue lines less than the previous one. I guess images just say more than words, even if they're only blurry reflections in the mirror. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... smooch.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='=3=' />

BTW, I ended up not putting the translation for the scribbling on the blackboard. Even though the scene was static there was a lot of minute camera movement and it was too much of a pain in the hole to match the subtitles to that. And I'm the type of guy who rather not do at all than do it half-assed, and I didn't want to delay the episode by another day. Either way, sorry for pestering you to translate it.

My father is going to be in town tomorrow, so it's possible that I won't be able to get the translation of episode 10 done until late into the night rather than the time I've gotten the last few done.
