Yeah, I guess sometimes developers may nerf a port to keep is closer to the others, but there have been a lot of multi-plat games that got better experiences on PC ports. The GTA games all had higher-res support and replay modes and can do fan-made online games. Of course, GTAIV (even after updates) still has a pretty poorly optomized PC port, so it's a good-and-bad situation and I'm sure there are a bunch more examples on all sides.

My biggest gripes right now are the limp attempts and half-commitments to motion controls and the general "fuck you" attitude from the big companies lately. Draconian DRM schemes that only irritate paying customers, the intentional spliting of original, integral, and/or planned content as post-release purchases, and "gaming journalism" can go suck a big ol' Donkey DKong. And Sony/Microsoft's lame attempts of cashing on the Wii and refusing to just call them flops is a waste of resources.

Imho GTA 4 runs pretty well now. The patches increased the performance to an acceptable and adequate level.

Microsoft actually made a lot of money through Kinect sales, so I wouldn't call it a complete flop.

I'm going to interrupt this and say

GIVE ME WATCHDOGS NOW!

And dammit Ubisoft why you gotta make me get Assassin's Creed 3 AND Assassin's Creed: Liberation Vita pack on the SAME DAY!? Like I would miss the debut of a female assassin, and a non-white one at that!

edit - I am aware they saw me coming. I love the historical setting of those games tho.

edit 2 - unless the consoles blow me away (unlikely) this may be the gen I become an exclusive PC gamer. Scary!

Alan Wake's American Nightmare was not as good as the "first" Alan Wake of course, but it was entertaining. It's also quite short at about 6 hours.

The Arcade Action is one half easy and one half insaaaane. The nightmare mode versions of the levels are 10 minutes of pure adrenaline and tension.
Consoles are fine for people who don't want to think too much about what they're getting, there's nothing wrong with that. It's like the difference between a fast food meal vs a home made one. They both can have their time and place.
That's an awful analogy. The nutritional differences between fast food and homemade food are huge, so you're indirectly (directly?) implying that the experience on a console is empty and just plain bad.
But what I mostly object to is because game developers often must create games with the lowest common denominator in mind (lower spec consoles),
Any why must they? Because consoles are more profitable?
But yet every multiplatform game demoed at E3 this year was running on a PC. I think this speaks tremendously to the state gaming has reached.
I didn't check out E3 and I don't know which games you're talking about, but it could mean that the console version were for consoles that aren't out yet, or simply that it's easier for developers to create and tweak a build on a PC than it is to make one for a console.

It's a perfectly apt analogy. Fast food is not always necessarily bad for you, I was focusing on the "fast" part and not the nutrition. Consoles are simpler and PCs require more effort to get right.

PC gaming is already as profitable as console gaming is now and is slated to be more so in the next few years. The reason why they must develop that way is the nature of multiplatform games. That's where the money is, targeting as many systems as possible. But PC hasn't been a priority until recently for a multitude of reasons. A big one being piracy that publishers (and some developers) like to focus on as the reason for "lost sales". Which simply cannot be tracked with any reliability because you can't predict sales like that. However, Steam and other online content deliverers have shown that there are plenty of profits to be had, if you aim correctly at the PC consumer.

And as for your last point: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/06 ... le-secret/

I played through Lollipop Chainsaw which, like every Suda51 game, is dumb, fun and flawed.

Then, a couple of days ago, I got sucked into the inescapable pit that is Civ 5. Why did I do that to myself?!? And why didn't I do it sooner?!?

Civ pretty much always "runs", it's rather a question of how long round loading times are you OK to endure.

I'd suggest waiting for summer deal and/or a new Gold-Edition with vanilla, G&K and all the DLC Civs.

Civ V was just on sale a couple weeks ago, unfortunately. But yeah, it should be back on sale when the expansion comes out.

Man, now I miss playing Civ. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

In other news, I've been sucked into the Diablo III void. I had never played a Diablo game before, and it's probably something I wouldn't play by myself, but it's certainly fun with friends. On Act III Inferno at the moment.

Well, I'm not saying it's not worth full-price.

I bought it retail during the release week and don't regret it at all. I've already spent ~250h with it.

I got a great deal on a used PSP (phat model 1003 if that matter) from a workmate so I'll start exploring this side of portable gaming only 8 years after the rest of the world. What games should I get for it? It came with 2 that sound interesting (Little Big Planet, GTA Liberty City Stories) and some that I probably won't care about (World Snooker Challenge 2005, Mega Minis Vol 1, Football Manager 2011, Coded Arms).

I got it to play Doom already so I know the money wasn't wasted. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/meh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';/' />

The DJ Max series, Lumines (I prefer 1), Every Extend Extra, Hot Shots Golf (there were two and they're both good), there's a Burnout game that's okay (if you can stand load times), P3P, and I liked WTF because I hate fun.

For my birthday, my friend got me FF13-2, but I didn't play 13 and we started playing last night and I didn't read the Beginner's Primer, so I have no fucking clue what's going on, but I'm actually kind of hating it on a number of levels. The complaints about the battle system are all nearly true. Paradigms are neat-ish, but when the game can auto-pick what you should use, picking a set of skills is not deep enough. Plus, they is WAY too much going on at once. Rock music with vocals, dialogue (that they put in the bottom left corner) from who knows who, and a lot of unnecessary narration and inner monologue. I really am not enjoying it and I feel bad because I think my friend bought it new...

What sort of genre do you like to play Aine?

Good god fall is going to be hell for gaming.

Oct 29 - Zero Escape - Virtue's Last Reward Vita (sequel to 999) 39.96

Oct 30 - Assassin's Creed 3 - 59.99

Oct 30 - Persona 4 Golden (Vita) - 39.99

Oct 30 - Assassin's Creed:Liberation Vita Bundle - 249.99

----

389.93

Hmm... Maybe I should cancel Assassin's Creed 3 because that's surely going to drop in price....though I would miss out on preorder bonus content... P4 and ZE are from Atlus and XSeed, and I don't trust that they'll be available when I want them. What can I say? Suikoden 2 haunts me to this day. Def getting that white vita though.

Yep, 13-2 is a steaming pile of dog crap, especially compared to 13 which was also a steaming pile of crap but significantly less steaming. More like lukewarm crap.

Actu--omg, I just saw that Petit mentioned Suikoden 2 as if she covets it as hard as I do. I want to know what awesomeness in the universe birthed you so I can find more. (Though I think Suikoden 2 is on PSN now? Because the usual $300+ price tag I've seen for used copies in the past has fallen to around $75 last time I looked.)

I've never played a puzzle game as aggravating and captivating as Catherine. I somehow feel for the over-exaggerated Vincent, probably because his pain in his life are mirrored in my pain from playing the goddamn puzzles. Not to mention the exceptionally fast boss monsters and demon baby and ass-and-also-some-titty monster. I've also grown to liking the "Golden Playhouse"/Twilight Zone-style faming device. The constant watermark is a bit excessive though... Overall, I love it, I hate it. I was thinking I would probably play it again after beating it, but this shit's getting way too difficult for me, and I'm only halfway through!

The puzzles aren't random and there are plenty of move by move walkthroughs on youtube. It's a game where you eventually say "screw it" and just want to get through the story.

After months of people talking it up, my copy of Steel Batallion arrived, shipped just after the universally horrible reviews heralding it as the worst game of the year. Now do I send it back unopened for a refund, or give in to morbid curiosity and see just how terrible it is?

I bought Dargon's Dogma and haven't touched it since I first opened it. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' /> I keep meaning to get back to it but I have gamer's ADD and I move from system to system all the time. First it was PC and MMOs then I started playing on the PS3 and bought Dragon's Dogma after about a week of wondering if it was for me. Now I'm playing Pokemon Black on my DS.

It's a rotation, I'll get back to the PS3 sometime.

The second order of business after installing Doom was to install an N64 emulator. OOT did run but alas at only about 10-20 fps making it unplayable. I guess I'm still impressed you could run it on a handheld a all?

I'll definitely look into a SNES emulator, but then I'll have to re-phrase the question and ask about what SNES games to play. I finished Chrono Trigger and FF4 on other systems already. I guess I never went too far in FF6 tho.

I see love for music games is expectedly high on the BBS. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I'm always wary of them and didn't enjoy most that I tried out, Rhythm Heaven and DDR being notable exceptions. But guess I'll give them a try in a spare while. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

How can you not buy DX:HR, the game that single-handedly saved gaming last year ?? 2x <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... dammit.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' />

I've been looking forward to it coming out with a good promotion, but when it came I changed my mind seeing how I didn't even touch 95% of games I bought during the Xmas sale, the original DX included. It will come on sale again eventually, and I rather keep that 10 euros in my pocket until then.
