I recently finished Final Fantasy XIII (47h49m16s). Despite hearing a lot of negative reviews since the game's release (nearly three years ago!), I was happy to find that it's a great game.



The story and the way it's presented are quite good. I really liked how the whole "Thirteen Days" events are spread throughout the beginning to give a sense of what happened before the main plot and what led to the relationships with the characters. I understand why the game itself limits the freedom of the player, i.e., the inherent linearity of the game. It is what drives the pacing of the game, which is is nice and fast the first 4/5th. At this point, the game opens a vast field to do sidequests, and this is point in which I became disappointed. The game's difficulty spiked, and instead of being optional sidequests, they become just another way to grind for experience.



The entire presentation of the game is phenomenal. The visuals and artwork are absolutely gorgeous. The seamless transition from world to cutscene to prerendered video perfects how action or emotion is never interrupted. The sound is excellent throughout the game (though I take off points for Odin's coconut horse trot), especially the music. This is the first Final Fantasy I know of that didn't use the typical fanfare theme, but all of the pieces are well-suited for each world and event in the game. The voice acting is some of the best I've experienced in any game (ahem). The characters murmur randomly in the world, and NPCs are able to initiate conversation. The actor who does Sazh's voice did an outstanding performance.



The battle system is a lot more intricate than it seems. It's very fast-paced, and combined with the high energy battle theme, it's fun within itself. There are a total of six roles each character can perform, and with this comes a good system of strategy. I praise the system because each battle scenario is unique, and it's (usually) not possible to use the same strategy for every battle. You can't just mindlessly attack; you actually have to think! I found that of the Final Fantasy's I've played, XIII is by far the hardest one. I became well-acquainted with the game over screen.



Overall, the game is enjoyable. It's definitely different from the previous games, but that doesn't make it bad. The presentation, straightforward story, and fast-paced battle system definitely package a great, no-nonsense RPG.

Its really nice to hear some honest and very accurate praise for this game after how much everyone shit all over it. It is probably my favorite RPG of this console generation (but Eternal Sonata gives it a run for its money) and I don't give a crap what other people think. I spent about 160 hours getting 100% completion in the game and being immersed in its world and don't regret one minute of it.



I think most people really just somehow enjoy mindless menu-clicking without really having to think about the battles that much (besides a little ounce of strategy here and there) and that's what makes most traditional RPGs so appealing and accessible to most people, but I'm more of an action and thinking-oriented gamer, so FF13 was just the breath of fresh air the series needed to get me interested again. 13-2 is also extremely good and a very worth successor to the first game, even if time-travel lore gets a little exhausting as a narrative, its still really compelling, especially if you enjoyed the characters and the world from 13. Do yourself a favor and check it out if you hadn't planned on it already.

Still wasted 2 hours trying to figure out what's the f was going on. The bundle was showing for €6.99 on the store page, all the way until the payment stage where it would suddenly go "the price of some items in your cart has been updated" and now it costs €9.24.



It's not the €2.25 spike in price that's pissing me off, but the false fucking advertising and regional discrimination. Apparently it shows you the prices for the country of your IP when you browse, but changes them to the prices for the country where your billing account is (PayPal in my case). So basically if you live abroad or travel a lot then you're shit out of luck and in for some bait-and-switching more arbitrary and pissing off than many airlines do.



Still, a decent price for a bunch of good games. Or, should I say, subscriptions to the virtual service of allowing us to play the games, which service can't be refunded, resold, passed on, and may be arbitrarily revoked at any time? You can easily get "non-Steam exes", if all you want is owning them legally in some way and supporting the devs.

Part of why they're so cheap is because you can't resell them.

I personally would never sell my games, unless I'm desperately in need of money, so I don't mind not being able to resell my games. Though I can certainly understand that criticism and it is a negative point.



Refunds have certainly happened. The War Z is a very recent example.

That picture can just be reduced to pretty much what I said, but instead it repeats 2~3 things over and over again.

The EULA just reinstates what most big publishers (want to) think has been going on for a long time (you get a licence for a single copy, not the right what you want to do with said product) or is written in most other EULAs that you accept when installing a game anyway ("if this game somehow, magically destroys hardware, the pub/dev can not be hold responsible" etc.).



Though I don't agree with it, some people see not having a retail package "to deal with" as a plus. Anyway, buying full-price on Steam is retarded. Fuck the convenience.

I'm fine with the hardware damage whatever disclaimer. What annoys me is the publishers limiting our rights to do what we want with the product we pay for. As convenient as Steam is, it's the ultimate form of this limitation by selling the games as service instead of a product. I know I for one will always try to get retail over Steam, or not pay more than €5 on Steam. At least with the retail version I have the disc with installation files, and I can always apply some no-steam-crack to it. Which I will feel fully entitled to when Steam/Valve goes bust, or turns too evil and intrusive for me to accept any more, or I find myself without Internet for a prolonged time.

The ultimate form of shit DRM is what Ubisoft pulled off and that's the reason why I stopped buying their games.



I'd rather have the installed files backed up and then just apply the crack.

Of course it's absolutely OK to do that, imho it's even OK nowadays, when Steam is still running.

And the last top-down-view (isometric or not) RPG I've played was probably on the SNES, which were all pretty much spectacular.

I played The Drunken Paladin, which has great and insanely funny writing, but that was quite a few months ago (probably over a year ago when I've last mentioned it here).



SA2 and The Room are both shit, but that's why they're so hilarious to play/watch.

I've finally arrived at the final part, made it to the Sonic stage and this ballsack of a game fucking freezes on me, with 4 lifes left.

I've been playing P4 Golden and Virtue's Last Reward when I get a chance, so today I spent an afternoon playing VLR and finished up all the endings except Phi's.



I get to the Q Room see the cube, see the explanation, put the Vita down and said "FUCK THIS SHIT" It may be cheating, but I don't even want to play through that crap. I may just guide it all so I can find out what the ending is. I think Tenmyouji is Junpei and the old lady that died is Akane? The timeline is weird with Clover, but I'm sure they have some sort of time travel explanation for that thing. >> And the Old Lady was really outside of her character from 999, but if Tenmoldy is Junpei, then she has to be Akane imo lol On another note, I'm disappointed one of the funner subplots in 999 is completely tossed aside with sensibleness in this game.

Unfortunately, I was only able to find Zelda Alttp, Illusion of Time/Gaia and Mario All-Stars, eventhough we had about 15.

I couldn't find the N64, but my brother probably has them.

Just when I was starting to get good at stopping myself from playing too many games at once, I have fallen back into backlogosis .

I am now getting near the end of SRWOGS2, which should have been it. However,

you people tricked me into getting P4G, which I am now somewhere in the middle and finding most pleasant (too easy though). Lunar: Silver Star Harmony was added just because on a whim.

Due to a PSN flash sale, I also have purchased Assassins Creed 3, which I haven't started because I'm at my parents and my ps3 is back home. Similarly, I have got the Humble Indie Bundle 7, which has several small and awesome computery distractions (with small problems that ruin some of them).

Then, I received X-COM:EU as a Christmas gift, which as with AC3, I won't be starting for another week.

I am trying to be more productive in the next year and none of this will help.

The Q room isn't as hard as it initially seems. I had a similar reaction as you, but once you realize a certain thing about the central mechanic, things get easier: (the following is a hint) there's usually only two or three cubes on each wall, and they are all connected in bunches, like battleship pieces. It's not like a minesweeper board with mines all over the place.



I think it's worth it to complete since you're so very close to the end at that point. (minor future puzzle spoilers follow) I believe it's the last puzzle of the game.
