Wouldn't Haruna become leader because she's oldest? I thought Mizuki would be at first, but then someone brought up that Miki became leader because she was older than the girls in 5th gen. (I think Miki was sort of in 6, but I don't really know, so please don't get upset if I'm wrong.) By that logic, Haruna would become leader. (Which I find extremly funny for some reason.)

Mizuki would be the leader, and personally she seems ready for it. Wasn't Maimi 16 when she became leader? I think Miki became leader because she had been a soloist first, before joining MM, thus giving her senioritiy.

I think Miki was an unusual case because she was not only older than the 5th gen, she had almost as much experience in the agency as them. 5th gen debuted in October of 2001, Miki debuted as a soloist in March of 2002. Mizuki debuted almost a full year before Haruna and she was an egg for four years before that. Since she was a fairly active egg and actually participated in a unit that got a CD release, I imagine they'd weigh all that heavier than Haruna's age.

Didn't Tsunku say Sakura fit right in.

Maybe it got him thinking that adding more girls wouldn't shake it up as much. I hope Sayu stays 'til 2014. If Aika was still in the group I'd open the door for her personally but a senior member is needed. Afterwards Riho and Ayumi could be the ones helping with dance routines and Mizuki will be our beloved reserved leader. I hope I'm not the only one that feels Mizuki has a calm nature about her.

Yeah it's really too bad Aika had to leave, I would want her to be leader for a couple years.

Sayu seems so odd with all those younger gens. Aika deserved to be leader. 8,9,10,11 and 12 makes way more sense to me personally than 6.....9,10,11,12 but I think if Reina wasn't the near perfect idol and Sayu the promoter they might not have lasted this long.

Aika would've been a fantastic leader too, bossy and bitchy just like Yuko. I really miss having a leader like that. Sayu's great and I love her as leader, but I want to see some younger gens kicked into shape again.

Aika leaving was probably the best thing that could've happened to this group, IMO. So what if someone has to lead with little experience? That's how it goes for every new idol group, so I don't see it as a big deal at all. Aika was dead weight almost form the moment she joined, and keeping her around to "lead" the new blood would've just as likely held them back as it would've helped them.

I never understood that bashing towards Aika. Since the moment I saw her with her brackets and all, I loved her. She wasn't the best dancer, but she wasn't the worst either, and she had a nice singing voice.

For me, she was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than that hag they labelled as the "miracle" that came in before her.

The Generasia page for them is helpful. They actually haven't been Eggs since 2011. H!O needs to change that forum title.

And here they are in order by seniority.

I know they're kenshushei or something now. But eggs is shorter lol

From the pics I see in the official website, Yoshihashi Kurumi, Taguchi Natsumi and Tanabe Nanami have their beauties ready. If Tsunku adds any of those, I won't complain. I'd still like some girls from the outside and not a bunch of already trained girls thrown into the group.

Aika was dead weight, but she was a hell of a bitch. And I really just want a bitch in my idol groups again. I mean, seeing her on some of her variety appearances and telling 9th gen they sucked were some glorious moments. She was the right kind of bitch--the kind that isn't overmuch, but still doesn't take any shit from anybody. At least in those few times we got to see it.

Anyway, it's something I've practically given up on, but I really did love that spitfire side to Aika and wanted someone in the group who would bring that fire back that Yuko took with her.

I think the best part is that the other girls told Aika to do what feels right when it comes to mentoring 9th gen and apparently that was telling them how awful they were.

Natsumi is SO CUTE and she is itty bitty. She's way smaller than anyone else in MM right now, so she'd probably look super out of place though.

Oh, I like that in an idol, too -- and I think it's something that MM has been missing for way too long -- but it has to be paired with actual talent, which Aika was lacking. Yuko, Miki Fujimoto, and to an extent Kei Yasuda could all pull it off because they could all sing and/or dance well. Yuko telling you "you suck" carries a lot more weight than some chick who kinda sucks telling you "you suck."

She probably felt that they needed a reality check. They weren't practicing enough. Tough love to keep them from embarrassing themselves and the group on stage.

I think the 10th gen could use some Aika-ese criticism, why doesn't Tsunku put that girl to work and have her

Mentor incoming Musumes and oversee extra dance lessons for Haruna(many many lessons!). She's a good dancer and I believe she made up for the 40% she lacked in the voice department went into dance.

It's not so much that it's someone who sucks telling someone else they suck, but someone with more experience telling them they aren't doing good and need to step it up. By the time 9th gen joined, she had been in the group about 5 years, so while Aika is not the greatest singer, she can make up for it in other ways. I've known plenty of people that have a good ear for music but can't sing to save their life. You just need to know what you are doing.

I wouldn't be surprised if she already does this! At least with the older dances. Not so much the newer songs.

Too bad Aika tried to be the cute "tee hee" idol for 98% of her time in MM.

She should have been the bad ass, cleavage showing, don't take no shit member of MM

now THAT'S the Aika I wanted to see.

Aika was out of commission when 10th gen came around but there are some videos showing she was there during practices. She was there when Masaki and Haruna got extra dance lessons for Pyoko.

What real responsibility does the leader have anyway? When Sayu leaves, and one of the 9th gen girls becomes a leader what would she do differently from the other 9th gen girls?

You know, thinking about this, Miki probably became leader because she was the sub-leader beforehand. Had Kaori graduated before Kei and Natsumi, I feel Kei would probably have been the next in line to lead the group, not Natsumi.

Natsumi was never leader or sub-leader though. It was always Kaori and Kei. Which always baffled me because I knew Nacchi wasn't older in age, but in seniority, so obviously she should have been the subleader. I think I remember it was one of the first real questions I asked on the BBS back in the day and everyone bit my head off. xD

The leader of MM is kind of like the Queen of England. They don't have any real power and they exist more as a figurehead and a source of inspiration. The agency makes all of the decisions and gives the orders, choreographers and voice coaches do the bulk of getting the girls in shape to perform. The leader does stuff like lead the little chant they do before going on stage, speaking for the group during promotional appearances, giving advice to the other members behind the scenes. Some past leaders have taken a more active role than others in whipping younger gens into shape.

I think it depends on the dynamic of the group. While Takahashi was leader there really weren't that many new members to deal with. By the time the 9th gen entered she had four other senior members to work with in mentoring them. Sayu inherited a group full of newbies with only Reina to help her.

What really matters more than the whole leader thing though is Sayu's popularity. She is the most known member of the group by far. No one else gets as many variety appearances and magazine photoshoots - they're lucky if other entertainers even know their names. When MM makes TV appearances, you pretty much only hear from Sayu and Reina. UFA really needs to work hard to get some of the other members out there, because otherwise the group's exposure level is going to drop greatly whenever Sayu leaves.

Edit: Right now Sayu also seems to be the leader of all of H!P - she's the one who leads the group chants at H!P concerts. When she leaves I wonder if they'll finally pass that role on to Saki?

It always seemed to me, that back then the "face of MM" as some members were called, never was made into the leader.

But, yeah, I've always been saying this, the leader position is 95% a prestige position.

I was under the impression that the leader has always been the oldest member of the group unless that person didn't want it. Seniority matters shit. I mean, look at the past leaders, and haven't they stated this before?

Also, the people who said that nothing much is expected of the leader is right. Nakazawa was just like that, and in the past, the new kids have always been assigned a senpai to kind of guide them through assimilation into MM.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if they're still doing the senpai system? Wasn't Ishikawa Michishige's senpai? I know Shige mentored Koharu when she joined. I guess the new kids just haven't been talking about it?

Other than that, I'm looking forward to this audition, and I want there to be more than one girl, I want them to get along really well and give the 10th gen a run for their money.

My understanding is:

Ai = Riho

Sayumi = Mizuki

Risa = Erina

Aika = Zukki

In reference to tenth gen I haven't heard much about them. I know Masaki and Reina are close so perhaps she's her mentor. In reference to the others, I don't know.
