I didn't think there would be a simultaneous PC release since I don't recall the previous two getting PC releases until months after the fact.
Wut

The PC version was released with the first console version, at the exact same date. It even came with some DX10 stuff.

Only the PS3 owners got fucked.

The second game got released on all platforms at the same time.

Finally finished Walking Dead game. Yay choices! I liked them and only regretted one... which I went back to replay. A little annoyed I had to erase all future chapters when going back to replay one though. I also teared up and my lip shook which is my equivalent to bawling like a little baby.

Now on to finish Graces f's zhonecage.

Bioshock: Infinite? More like Bioshock: Dishonored, am I right?

I'm enjoying it but, man, are both of those games aesthetically, thematically and mechanically similar...

I played a gross amount of Dark souls over the weekend...I can admit that now.

I played around 22 hours, and finished the game once, and got to the church tower bell in the new game +

My friend linked me an awesome mod for the PC version that forces the game to run at a higher resolution and with much better texture filtering. It greatly improved the graphics.

How were you able to play it without the resolution hack ? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... omgwtf.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':omgwtf:' />

Only having 720p is absolutely disgusting to look at.

There are also mods for new armor, different interface and a 60fps hack, btw.

NG+ was pretty cool, but I'd suggest to go no higher than SL130.

For your next run, you should try a SL1 run (pyromancer). It'll be so damn intense at times and you'll hate 4kingz even more than before !

Just finished Infinite. Amazing game, but other than for brand recognition, I have no idea why they called it a Bioshock game. It would have been much better as its own thing.

You could say the same thing about Final Fantasy or some other series that have changed over time.

I think it's the underlying themes and the overall u/dystopian setting that are central to the games. And of course the overall gameplay.

Ken Levine personally said he had no interest in making the direct sequel BioShock 2 and that was only the publisher's decision to make another one in Rapture.

I also think the intro scene is very much a metaphorical "what if... ?" nod to the first Bioshock game. It's basically showing you in a way that what could have happened if the game did not take you down below, but up into the sky.

Granted, I won't be able to play it until next Thursday/Friday next week, so I am far from a final conclusion and still stuck at the 3h mark. I've not even found Elizabeth yet !

I finally got married in "Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Towns". Even though I've been a huge HM fan since I was 6, this is the first time I've had the dedication to pursue a spouse. My choices were a fellow farmer (who spends way too much time with his little sister), a flower salesman, a mailman, a horse obsessed maniac, a violinist, or a doctor's apprentice. I was going to marry the violinist, Mikhail, but I ended up picking Hiro, the doctor's apprentice, because I have a particular bias for shotas. Now I just need the house and bed upgrade so I can have a child. I feel so odd posting here since I'm such a casual gamer and I find farming games fun.

Game openings are important

Great article by Adrian Chmielarz explaining what's wrong with game design in a lot of titles, using Bioshock Infinite as an example. No spoilers, other than describing the first couple of minutes of the game.

I agree with him on so many points, being a victim of checking every damn corner in every location myself (OOOOH SHINY indeed). But when you think about it, those things do break realism and immersion. And don't even get me started on invisible or retarded walls.

For some reason reading your post right after an article about child brides in Afghanistan and wherever else made me laugh.

It sounded creepy to me as I was writing it, and I was trying to make it less creepy. I guess being amused is better than being creeped out.

I also wanted to point out that the bachelors in HM games are generally weird and have creepy obsessions. The bachelorettes are generally pretty normal, but there's some weird ones there too.

I personally consider it a huge spoiler, since I had no idea how it was going to start this way. That's why I've put it into spoiler tags above.

I didn't collect or even notice all those coins, I just looked into the barrel around the corner.

Deactivating the "shiny notices" thing probably would have helped him actually focusing more on the atmosphere itself.

Re: What are you playing?

Post by neshcom »

I ordered Hyperdimension Neptunia from the UK a few weeks ago and it came in today! I was totally worried because it ended up being a UK Region 2 disc, but (mostly) only BD movies are region locked. I played for about 45 minutes and had to put it down. I've been having a mild stress headache the past few days and the complexity was making it worse. The battle system is just so complicated for what should be an easy game style. Your characters either do weapon, melee, or gun attacks that fit into combos of up to 4 attacks. Each of those 3^4 combinations can be customized in-menu to do their normal button attack, use AP to do an ultra attack, or some convoluted "switch"/"combo chain"(?) move that I think restarts your combo chain and/or swaps your character with one placed behind them (if any). You can also defend, but you can't just use items like an American Pig Dog; your characters have "item skills" that you assign percentage points amongst to up the chance that they'll heal themselves up to a certain percent IF they feel like it and IF you have enough of the four generic item material potion things. Also, the console-based main characters can sometimes transform into their goddess-affiliated form as a skill buff (their skills remain the same) for any reason without repercussion? These transformations can also be customized and buffed. And the enemies have a purple "armor break" bar that, when depleted, does something, and a purple bar that also does something. There's a mechanic of extra damage when an enemies armor is worn down, but the interface is confusing. Neither bar seems to represent anything tangible like health or armor for more than a moment at a time. The dungeons feel clunky and empty and the battle scenes feel capital-B Bare.

As for story, it's a kitsch take on Any Generic RPG with a lot of jabs at console manufacturers (Neptunia [SEGA Saturn-tan essentially] proclaiming "Neptune does what you all don't") and 4chan jokes. The English acting is par, but the dialogue/VN engine breaks up the pacing often. The characters are highly stylized with lots of subtle animations (and plenty of unsubtle boob animations). I need some more time to figure it out, but it doesn't bode well so far.

It's mobile, but I love Puzzles and Dragons in my spare time. It's like a mix of pokemon and bejeweled.

Anyway, on the FB group, some guy showed off his itunes cards in preparation for an event. 1.3K US American Dollars worth.

What.

The.

Fuck.

I have spent about 20$ on the game, myself, when I was caught in a furor, but holy shit, come the fuck on dude.

As far as consoles go, I am playing Fire Emblem (3DS), Gravity Rush (Vita), Xenoblade (Wii), Tales of Graces F (PS3), and Ever17(PC) whenever I get a chance/whichever strikes my fancy.

First ~10 minutes gameplay of Dark Souls II looked great.

Then they went on with the Q&A and they resolve important questions about casualization, overall systems etc.

Now, they say the PC is the lead platform and will have native support for 60fps.

And, if we go by the PC boxart, it won't have cancerous gfwl.

I have not been this over-hyped for a game since fucking Majora's Mask.

There's always one man, one city, one lighthouse, you know.

BS:I kept me on my toes for today and I've read and watched some 4~5h of people talking/writing about the game and all that it implies. Some of the details that went over my head were pretty cool.

However, it does have some fundamental logic problems that Rapture did not have, but were actually solved in the Rapture games.

Most prominently, why is nobody using vigors, eventhough you can buy them everywhere ? And if not for the population, than who is using these obviously very well known (through fairs) powers ?

I also think the extreme violence in battle was not necessary at all.

Technically it was a pretty good game, but there were some restrictions that were disappointing, like the VERY few people models and quite large number of invisible walls.

It's definitely a game worth talking about and it will leave an impression on you, one way or another.

Bump for probably one of the biggest masterpieces in gaming history:

Image

I didn't play it when it was released, tried it a few years ago, but wasn't too overwhelmed, mainly because of the finicky and stiff controls. It just didn't feel really intuitive.

But because of the GoG rerelease (and some mods), I gave it a second try and holy shit have I been missing out !

If I would have played it some years ago, it could have easily become one of my favourite games of all time, but even now I can appreciate it was a superb game that has become so damn rare these days.

All those RPG elements, that side-info, that hunting for resources, those stats & leveling, that tension, it all comes together perfectly.

It's like a mixture between Deus Ex (game mechanics) and Stalker (atmosphere).

So so so so great.

Cross-posting and PStripple-posting (we haven't had this in a very long time) from the movies thread and essentially tripple-posting:
What are your most favourite movie trailers of all time ?
I'm being somewhat of a selfish whore (I like it, you know that) here, but the Dark Souls Bartholomew trailer is so extremely well done:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93LFz_j5fQA&hd=1

One of the best trailers overall in the past years was this DX:HR one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kq5KWLqUewc&hd=1

The best (gameplay) reveal trailer for a new franchise clearly goes to Assassin's Creed:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ixr2q8bHo8

So, if you have any game trailers that really stood out for you, just post them !

Man, Capcom had better not be giant dicks about this one too. It's bad enough we don't get Investigations 2 and Ace Attorney vs Professor Layton is nowhere to be seen, this is just dangling so much in front of the English fans. Does it really cost that much to localize? Argh I want it so much! SO MUCH. *grabby hands*

Whoa, 3D models. And I thought Phoenix died? Anyway, glad to see Phoenix back.

I went on a little bender this weekend and got some new games.

Monaco released this weekend and I'm liking a lot of it. It's fun, but it's also a turbulant experience to get into. It's visually cluttered and the introduction really just gives you the broader strokes of gameplay, but not a lot tactics-wise. Each level is accompanied by this godawful ragtime piano and I hate it. The game is charming, but the music seriously kills the vibe for me. I'll be trying multiplayer soon. Add me on steam and we'll play together! UID: brycas

I also picked up Surgeon Simulator 2013 and was surprised at how competant I was. I finished the first level my second try (and I was on the hallucigenic effect most of the time). It's fun, but, looking at the achievements, there's some serious room for expertism.

Poker Night 2 is rubbing me the wrong way. I'm really liking the new features and unlock system, but I'm not as invested with the characters this go around. Ash is totally unknown to me, Sam doesn't have Max's charisma (plus, Max is literally right behind Sam to chime in anyway), Claptrap was designed to be annoying, and GLaDOS is a clunky character conceptually. She can't say anything without her Portal 2 body swooping in from the ceiling and her dialogue is just plain. Telltale also continues their streak of horribly executing menus and UX. If you finish a game and would like to quit to Windows, you pick "Unlocks," click over to "Help & Options," click again to "Main Menu," and then you can click exit. Also in Telltale tradition, the graphics are so-so while being very taxing and there's no controller support (to the point where I can't launch with an X360 controller plugged in). And I don't much care for the music. It's off-putting.

Finally, I played the beta of Papers Please, another fantastic dystopian from Lucas Pope, developer of the fantastic The Republia Times. You play a border inspector and determine if various residents can pass the border or not. Each day, the rules change based on news and politcal actions, each one slowing your job. You work to feed and heat your family. More papers id'd, more money to send home, but it's difficult because a wrong entry can mean big penalties. I think it's in Greenlight for now, but you can pick up the latest betas on the developer's site.

Oh fuck, I've been playing iPad games too. Okay, quick reviews!

Fish Out Of Water: fun, but repetative and many duplicate objective.

Grim Joggers: addicting, but difficult.

The Other Brothers: I want to like it, but the controls and actually understanding the game mechanics is not easy. And it's a platformer, so it ought to be easy to get.

Adventure Time: Legends of Ooo: not as adult-friendly as the TV show.

Golf Star: I'm dying. A moderately good Hot Shots Golf facsimile on iPad.

Tekken Card: Surprisingly entertaining, but the tactics are a little simple.

Slayin: A side-scrolling RPG with an arcade game mechanic. Definitely fun.

DONE.

Ash is totally unknown to you?!?! What kind of horrible childhood did you lead?!?

Granted, the version in this game is shit because it's not voice by the actual actor, Bruce Campbell, but you need to watch the original Evil Dead movies to experience the joy of one of the greatest horror/action icons ever. Hell, just watch the the third one, Army of Darkness, since it summarizes the others, and if you like it, go back and watch the second, then the first (since the second is basically a much higher budgeted version of the first, which was a film they made for almost nothing).

See, I thought it was supposed to be the Killing Floor guy and that just didn't make sense to me. And yeah, his voice is awful (and I haven't seen the movies). I will definitely check the movies out.
