Now for the good... If that live action NGE ever comes though, the visual bar is now set very high. I loved the weight and the juiciness of the battles. This was the first time I felt that the scale and weight of a giant robot battle was properly conveyed since the Asuka vs Eva Series battle in End of Evangelion. Music and sound effects were a very solid piece of workmanship too, complimenting the visual side perfectly. As I already said, the visual concept and design was good. And I like me some Ron Perlman, too.
Well now you've just made me more excited for it.

I got "House" on Netflix yesterday. Not sure if I'll be up to watching it tonight but hopefully I'll hit it up Sunday.

I didn't pick any of the movies.
I wanted to get <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenacious_ ... >Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny because I love Tenacious D. (Urg! Now Kikapoo is stuck in my head.)

This is an awesome article about the visual language of Pacific Rim.

This is why I love filmmakers like Del Toro and Edgar Wright so much. Yeah, you might see "dumb entertainment" on the surface, but once you really explore what is actually going on on the screen, you find a much deeper film.
Having visual consistency in characterization is hardly "deep." That read like a college freshman in an intro to film studies class.

But my snobbery aside, I saw Pacific Rim and enjoyed it for what it was: a power-fantasy sci-fi action summer flick for young men/boys based on a nostalgic genre with the addition of really amazing special effects. I appreciated Ron Perlman and the lack of cliche romance. The only thing that stuck out to me as annoying was the fact that the lead dude and the Australian dude looked BASICALLY IDENTICAL haha. Also, surprised but then not-that-surprised to see the maru maru mori little kid - she's inescapable.

The best movie I saw all year was Mud and it made me obsessed with the name "Juniper." It was so original and simple but weirdly exciting, funny, and also sad. That sounds like a bad cliche movie review but the film is pretty hard to describe. People say it is kind of like a modern Huckleberry Finn.

Does the Wolverine movie look dumb or awesome? I feel excited when Japan pops up in mainstream Hollywood films but then get all anxious it will be lame or stereotypical.
Also super looking forward to Hunger Games.

The Wolverine was unexpectedly good. It's by far the best of the Fox Marvel movies.

It was also probably the single most respectful treatment of Japan that's ever been in a Hollywood movie, and I was pretty surprised at how not only is most of the movie in Japanese, but the majority of it is completely untranslated.

I saw this today and agree with your opinions for the most part.
after it ended, I snuck into This is the End in the theater next door and found it to be pretty good too. I'm not a huge fan of any of the main actors/characters, so if you are, you'll like it even more!

I learned yesterday that "Onna, Kanashii, Otona," the song performed by shuffle unit Sexy Otonajan, is featured in the background in a scene in WOLVERINE. That's gotta be the first time a Hello! Project song's been used in a Hollywood movie.

Just watched The Flashpoint Paradox.

It's by far the most violent thing I've seen from the DC comic animated movies. I'm talking blood, guts, and brain matter being sprayed everywhere. It's pretty good though, and it's pretty much required watching since it's the transition between classic DC, and the current "New 52" continuity they started using over a year ago.

I was pleased at the Japanese content in THE WOLVERINE and I thought the two actresses were excellent, although I'm pretty sure they were both dubbed in English by other voice actresses, as was the Russian actress who played Viper. And, of course, I was thrilled to hear Miki Fujimoto on the soundtrack of a big-budget Hollywood film, although the Sexy Otonajan song clip was too brief for my tastes.

I don't know that the film's treatment of Japan is quite as respectful as Al suggests. Pretty much every Japanese male in the film is a villain and all are ultimately beaten or vanquished in some way by either Wolverine or the three women. One of the main characters is threatened by her own family members. And one key male character, treated sympathetically right from the start, turns out in the end...to not be so sympathetic. And the white hero rescues everyone and sets everything right and both Japanese women show romantic interest in him, but not in any of the Japanese men.

Still, this is the second mainstream Hollywood film in a month (after PACIFIC RIM) to feature a Japanese actress in the leading lady role. In fact, this one has two Japanese leading ladies. And that's pretty significant. Both actresses here, Rila Fukushima and Tao Okamoto, are making their feature film debuts in WOLVERINE. I wonder what their backgrounds are.

Also, they showed a trailer for Keanu Reeves' 47 RONIN, which, judging from the clips, has no relation to any previous version of the famous story. But it's got Rinko Kikuchi, from PACIFIC RIM, and Hiroyuki Sanada, from WOLVERINE. But it's also got Lucy Liu, presumably as an ancestor of KILL BILL's O-ren Ishii. :headscratch:

Hayao Miyazaki's newest film, "Kaze Tachinu" (The Wind Rises) about the man who designed the Japanese Zero (fighter plane used in WWII), has been #1 at the boxoffice in Japan for three weeks.

I'm fucking heartbroken that Pacific Rim is failing in Japan. The huge success in China is enough to ensure it will get a sequel, but it was tailor made for Japan.

Del Toro has to be bummed out because there were a ton of great news reports from over the weekend of him promoting the movie and geeking out in Japan.

As disappointed as I was with the movie myself, I'm surprised it flopped in Japan because of what you said basically. And with Kojima recommending it and all.

It's not Japanese and there's no huge star like Brad Pitt in it.
Pretty sure it's just regarded as "one of those stupid, mindless Hollywood movies", because that's a very common thought there when it comes to movies out of the USA.

A fellow named Giantrobo over on DVD Talk theorized as to why PACIFIC RIM was a hit in China and not in Japan:

My theories on China and Japan:

China

1. The film featured a Chinese Hero team. (Good)
2. They are NOT the "Giant Robot" Asian culture. (not so good)
3. the film was mostly set in Chinese areas. (good)

Japan

1. This is an American made film and they still have "Godzilla 98" in their heads. Image
2. The film featured a Chinese Hero Team. (not good for them)
3. The film was mostly set in Chinese areas. (not good for them)

Plus--my own 2 cents--Japan might be sick of Mana Ashida already.

Also, Rinko Kikuchi is more popular outside Japan than in it. She's gotten crap for not working the celebrity circuit in Japan.

I went and saw Elysium last night.

Meh is all I have to say. It wasn't the best move I've seen. Matt Damon can do better then this. They reused so many scenes it was crazy. I think they flash-backed to the same scene like five times.

Apparently poor people speak Spanish and rich people speak French and screw the Asians (mainly Chinese/Japanese), they are probably on Mars or something.

I watched "Profondo Rosso" on Sunday. It was really good, and the soundtrack was awesome. But the random switching between Italian and English was driving me crazy. Has anyone else seen it? It's also known as "Deep Red" in some versions.

Wow, that's a blast from the past. I used to see this on television, as DEEP RED, back in the late 1970s. I haven't seen it since, even though they've finally released the uncut English version on DVD. I was curious about what you meant by the switching between Italian and English and I checked on Amazon and here's what was written:

Producer Bill Lustig has restored the film to its original two-hour-plus running time, though some scenes exist only with Italian-language soundtracks (which are subtitled). It's a bit jarring at first (it makes for an unintended joke when a man suddenly checks his hearing aid after a language switch), but it's the only way to see Argento's original cut.
