I'm not sure what happened between those two pictures, but one of them has to be an optical illusion and I'm placing my bet on the top one.
The Saya I meant was actually Saaya Irie, it was 12 years ago and she was 11 years old. Here's a short article in English with pictures that will give you an idea (NSFW, unless U-15 gravure is safe at your work ). Pretty sure we had a thread about that on the BBS, but that would have been on the old one. Curiously, she's still active as an actress and model, and her (safe-for-work) Wikipedia page conveniently omits the details on what launched her career.
Enough derailing the thread though.

I remember this and I also remember feeling so, so bad for her. The exploitation of children is real. No matter how 'mature' someone may look she was still a kid. Ah man. I imagine myself at the same age I knew n o t h i n g.
Quote from the article - it’s fairly amazing what lengths even young girls will go to to “launch” a “career” even before they finish growing up
Ah yes because I'm sure she made all her own decisions at that age. Poor thing. She's probably seen it all by now. :/
By the way, on topic for this thread, have photobooks declined in popularity by a lot since lets say, 10 years ago? I see Mizuki came in the top 10 with only 900 sold? Is that nationwide?

Presumably nationwide from whatever retailers Oricon counts (which is probably most of the ones that are actually selling these things). Most of the ones in the top 10 right now have been there for a few weeks so I'd say yeah, they've declined in popularity and the average one probably doesn't sell much. Especially because it doesn't take much to top the chart.
I'll keep an eye on the chart for whenever an H!P idol releases them, though. The chart doesn't go very far back so you've gotta keep up with it, meaning I can't go look anything more than two months old. Maria's will be the next one I keep an eye out for on the charts.
Also, I'm not sure where you saw Mizuki's 900 for her latest book. It only ranked one week with 529. It's possible it sold 900 copies, but I don't have a source.

Upcoming photobook releases:
10/27 - Kudo Haruka's 4th photobook "Kudo Haruka"
11/16 - Kusumi Koharu's 6th photobook "moment"
11/17 - Oda Sakura's 2nd photobook
Seems backwards to me that Koharu is releasing her first photobook in 8 years now that she's done with modeling and wants to act but WHATEVER.

Wow, 3 favorites releasing a photobook within a month.
Koharu's one doesn't seem much different (or innovative) from her kohai's ones though.

But putting that aside, she does look like she's aged 20 years since graduating in her other modelling photos too. I guess I really don't dig this high fashion look with zero trace of cute vs the idol look.

Very close figures, surprising to me since I didn't think she could have the same size of determined fanbase as a model.

Ikuta will be releasing her second photobook 'if' on 1/20. The theme is what her life would be like if she hadn't become an idol. Judging by the previews, it of course looks to be like every photobook ever.

Also, Maria will be releasing her second photobook 2/2. Summarizing all the growth she's made, because 100% of 0 is still 0.

Yamaki Risa will be releasing her first photobook titled "Sketch me" on Valentine's Day.
Re: Hello!Project Publication Release Project'18
Cover of Yamaki's Visual Book.
They made it a point of saying it's a Visual Photobook and not just a Photobook.

When I saw that, my first thought was that we might see Yamakki artbooks in the future (which would be amazing).

omg... I'd die of happiness if that happened....

It is good news for her and artbooks would be great.

Maria's photobook ranked 8 with 1,147 copies. Ranks 8, 9 and 10 were all within 25 copies of each other. If the book had sold 27 less copies, it wouldn't have ranked at all.

Yeah. I can do a full rank for you.
#1 35,252 copies. I don't know who this is and can't figure the name out, but they're not an idol.
#2 Nagahama Neru (Keyakizaka46) - 4,578 copies. Released December 19. I don't know the complete number but I know it's sold over 115k.
#3 Ayane Sakura - 4,214 copies. Voice actress.
#4 Komiya Arisa - 3,373 copies. Actress and Love Live! voice actress.
#5 - Shiraishi Mai (Nogizaka46) - 1,976 copies. Released February 2017. Has probably sold a billion copies. Sold 122k in the first two weeks.
#6 - Asahina Aya - 1,513 copies. Gravure model.
#7 - Ishihara Satomi - 1,491 copies. Released September 2017. She's an actress.
#8 - Maria, duh.
#9 - Suzuki Nobuyuki - 1,143 copies. He's an actor.
#10 - Saito Asuka (Nogizaka46) - 1,121 copies. Released January 2017. I know it broke 100k sometime last March.
Just a few weeks ago there was even more Nogizaka46 and Keyakizaka46. They basically dominate the chart. Maria got really lucky with her photobook because a lot of H!P releases come out in the middle or towards the end of the charting week, which basically guarantees they won't rank. I've yet to see one rank more than one week if it does make it.

Thank you Anderei. There is some crazy numbers and lenght of rankings for photobooks, I never thought it would sell good enough to be in the ranking for a year.
Maybe 46 groups' photobooks are more interesting than H!P ones but in a better quality than AKB ones ?
Didn't Airimania sold good for H!P standarts ? I remember it being sold very quickly everywhere and having a few reprints before °C-ute's graduation.

Nogi put all their more suggestive gravure in their photobooks and keep the magazine stuff more tame from what I've read.

I wasn't thinking of this kind of "interesting" things but it may explain good sales, as they are really popular groups.
