The Great Fashion Faux Pas Thread!

Post by Shoujo Q »

Introducing, "The Great Fashion Faux Pas Thread!"

I created this thread to talk about something other then what's being released soon and then slowly watch as the thread dies, it's kinda heart breaking. I guess that's one of my jobs here, trying to keep this board alive. So I'm going to pick something I'm sure we all have an opinion on, Hello! Project fashion! Sure we talk about it a little when a single is released or a PV is shown and oh the multitude of concert outfits that are paraded before us, it's a wonder I haven't thought of this before. I hope this works out. D:

Anyway, there are always those special few outfits that are burned into our skull forever and wont leave even if we try to forget them. As everyone knows, Hello! Project isn't known for their great fashion sense sometimes. They tend to costume the girls every chance they get, sometimes it works and other times, well I'm sure you know. Morning Musume have been around for awhile so they top the list of repeat offenders. But other Hello! Project groups past and present have been known to wear some pretty funky stuff. This thread was made to bring out those mistakes and showcase them for everyone to cringe at or talk about.

Signs of bad fashion are easy to spot. Feathers, fringe and ruffles never seem to go well. And sometimes they wear those white sneakers with their costume, eek. It's Casual Concert Chic!

But the worst type of fashion happens when they have to double up on costumes, this always in concerts and mostly in the beginning and very end of a concert when they don't have time to change normally. This makes the girls two or three times larger then they once were and they are always easy to spot as they are the most gaudy of them all.

Below I'll showcase a few of my favorite of the worst and I ask for your help in digging out the worst of the worst of H!P fashion's. They can be from PVs, CD Covers, Concerts, Photobooks, Magazines, Television, and Everyday wear. I also encourage you to find some GOOD fashion (If you can!). Because sometimes the people at UFA get it right and pull off some awesome combos. (My favorite are anything dealing with Plaid, it's one of my favorite things.)

Image

Whoever decided to stick the girls in these outfits must have really hated them. Who ever thought feathers and whatever that fabric is, were a good idea? And Kei's hat, that thing's massive. D:

Image

I forget what concert this was, but the stripped shirt and plaid skirt. At least TRY to match would you? Apparently they didn't get that memo when they put the girls in this outfit. Even Takahashi doesn't seem that please about the whole thing either.

Image

How can we forget the wonderful Bonkyu Bonkyu outfits? I cringed when I first saw them, (the other Bonkyu Bonkyu outfits aren't any better as they were double up costumes.) The whole thing made me said because the song was one of my favorites and they ruined it with these costumes. I want everyone to notice Reina in this, because her freind Sayumi decided, hey I like your hair style so I'm going to do the same thing in the future! Just you watch.

ImageImage

And she did. Gospelmusume please to meet, RainbowOMGSparklesMusume.

Image

She really isn't that fat, it's the 2,000 costumes she has on underneath, she swears. Oh and the puff sleeves. No one should be subjected to puff sleeves, not even Eri.

Image

Give them some clown hair, a nose and a little car and you have yourself a mini-circus.

Image

Noooo, they aren't hiding another costume under those, are they? Couldn't be! I think the designers were having a, who can make the biggest skirt EVA challenge. I think it's a tie between Maasa and Miyabi. But Miyabi wins because her boots don't match.

Image

Chisato got attacked by roll shiney blue fabric. She tried to save herself but it was only a flesh wound. Note the little puff of red, just cause we can sort of design. I swear that's what it is. Either that or the designer made a mistake but since she used the entire roll of fabric to make these costumes, she had to use something else to cover the hole.

Image

I'd have some christmas nightmares if I saw this in public. It is anything but cute.

Image

She was attacked by the ruffle fairy and... If you're going to match purples, at least try to get them to match.

Image

From a distance it looks like it could be her hair, but then you notice her hair is up. On closer inspection you see that something clearly died on her shoulder and poor Aya hasn't noticed. :<

Now, my biggest pet peeve are tiny hats. I hate them!

Image

It seem the bigger and guadier they are, the more I hate them.

Image

Mai's hat also has an animal print. Animal print and plaid? D: You wound me!

Image

Not only is it a headband, it's a hat and that's not a good combo. I want to shoot it off her head, like those games at the arcade.

I could probably go on and on and find more but that wouldn't be fun at all now would it?

This thread is meant to be fun for everyone so please enjoy yourself and try not to bash the girl and concentrate on the clothes they are wearing please. We don't need to start a hate war. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... lesson.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':sideways:' />

Let's all have a laugh and find some funky fashion faux pas.

I was hoping you'd bring up RR21. Those were HIDEOUS. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/meh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';/' />

ImageImage

I'm surprised more people aren't up-in-arms about this one. ZOMG MUSLIM HEADSCARF IS OFFENSIVE!!1 Oh, and those gloves. Man. Those gloves top the whole thing riiiight off.

Image

The outfits are really cute (although I don't loooove the shorts, I suppose they work on teeny-tiny girls such as themselves), the boots are really cute, but put together they're cut off at all the wrong places... it makes them look really short and their legs look chubby.

ImageImageImage

That hat... That skirt... Those boots...

Image

... really, H!P? And if that's Yuko in the corner with Tsuji, I do think I see a panty shot. Or a thong shot. Or... something. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hatthe.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cake:' />

And that's just within the last 50~ pages of H!O's imageboard. Imagine what jewels you could find digging back..

I almost want to make a "Fashion gone RIGHT" thread to make up for this one. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... popper.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':popper:' />

This thread is waaaayy too easy. H!P is all about fugly costumes. I don't know what goes on in their designer's head but they slap a bow and glitter onto any shit. Here is one:

It looks a hell of a lot like an Arabic Muslim headscarf to me. (It might be called a hijab? I'm not sure.) It's too large and loose around her head to really be a hood, plus the cloth (looks like cotton, maybe) doesn't match with her top at all, and it appears to have pinned on..

Image

I guess if you see it with the rest of the outfit, it looks more like it. If said headscarf-thing was part of, I don't know, a similarly striped sweatshirt or something, it might look a little different, but it isn't.

Considering how butt-hurt people got recently over Rachel Ray's "peace scarf", I'm a bit surprised there aren't more politically-correct asshats saying things.

When the Japanese do it, it's cute, when Rachel Ray (or any white person) does it, it's politically incorrect. But in reality, Eri was the only one who knew there was going to be a rain storm coming and decided to be prepared when it did come. The director must have tipped her off.

The Rachel Ray thing was totally stupid but it was not because her scarf was "Muslim" and thus offensive. The particular print and style of her scarf resembled a keffiyeh scarf which has become associated with Palestinian terrorism. But a pop idol draping a hot-pink striped scarfy thing over her head is not that. Nor is it a hijab. And lots of women wear scarves over their head for fashion (esp in the 50s ish).

The gloves, on the other hand, are offensive in their sheer ugliness.

I looked up the Rachel Ray thing and found an article here. It wasn't even a headdress. It was just a fringy scarf that looked like a headdress that represented terrorism. People get so worked up, I think!

I love this thread. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cake:' /> I always wonder what the girls think of some of the costumes they have to wear.

Obviously. Three words: sparkly fishscale bloomers.

MORNING MUSUME'S GIRL'S COSTUME WAREHOUSE

Slutty Elizabethan noblewoman!

Slutty Gladiator!

And frog.

Also, what is it about Shabondama that makes the stylists feel like shredding up Member's Only Jackets and topping it off with raincoats?

I know there was a really heinous Aruiteru outfit that WAS raincoats, or very nearly. Must find.

To contribute something substantial to the thread, one thing that stands out in my mind are the horrible puffy costumes for one of Super Lives, that barely allowed them to move at all. Made perfect sense for a Shabondama performance. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cake:' /> Sorry for no picture, couldn't find one on the net, and my CDs are somewhere else.

I watched Aya Matsuura's Shinka no Kisetsu concert to entertain me during a loooong train ride recently, and was so embarrassed by the outfits I tried really hard to hide my laptop from the person next to me. Here's a taste: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArNVrgn1X1Y

I don't remember what the first outfit was, but I was thrilled when it finally came off, and immediately shot down again when that replaced it. It didn't improve much after that either.

Anything with the poofy dresses OH GOD I HATE THE POOFY DRESSES!!

Worst in recent times is Maimi's dress from Edo no Temari Uta II. Chisato's was pretty bad too, but Maimi's made me vomit from the sheer poof. LOOK AT IT, SHE LOOKS LIKE SHE'S WEARING A MUMU!

Image

Next up is this live of Maki's Scramble. The horrible shiny pants, the fatty shirt with ruffles that are too big and too shiny...and the best part of this video are the cuts into equally horrible outfits...just not as bad as the first one. Ruins a great song.

And look at this performance of Nochiura Natsumi. The designer found a discount on Easter basket grass and put it to good use!

And enough silver fabric to make a scifi/fantasy con jealous!

And let's hit it up with some old school hate. Renai Revolution 21 is a great song. I'll put up with the space outfits. I will not put up with the colored fuzz. From Kei's purple fuzz hat to Mari's multicolored fuzz, to the fuzz skirts, sleeves, scarves, hair accessories, ect ect ect it's like they gathered every cute magical girl mascot and collected their hairballs!

I have no attempted witty remark for this abomination. Too much ruffles combined with poofy skits leads to giant masses of fabric running around onstage. Occasionally I can make out an arm or leg.

I have picked on C-ute again, but generally they have been given pretty good outfits, even in their concerts. The poofy dresses wouldn't be so bad in this performance if the sashes wouldn't make these tiny polly pockets look fat.

WTF is on Sayumi's head? And why hasn't it eaten her?

Latex, random decals, shiny fabric, and plastic gems randomly glued. Sentence fragments approve of the former sentence.

OKAY I AM STOPPING NOW. I could go on all day, seriously.

See but it isn't just about ugly concert outfits. It is how ugly they are outfitted in their regular clothes. Aren't idols supposed to be fashion icons usually?

Take this:

Image

This isn't really my style, but it is really cute and it fits with the sort of rock-image that Buono gravitates to.

This is a mixed bag:

Sayumi and Takahashi look cute. Reina looks hot once you ignore those stupid half pig-tails with leopard print bows. Koharu is also wearing passably trendy outfits. But wtf is going on with everyone else? They are all shoved into aesthetically gross, unflattering outfits -- like silver puff Risa, cyber-Muslim Eri, and grandma Aika wearing mardi-gras beads over her Christmas knit sweater. I just don't understand.

You know who looked good ALL the time? Maki. There has to be some personal choice going on with these types of pictures, no?

I found those Varieté-style dresses actually not that bad.

Especially compared to the plain plastic shit Mikan has going on.

Anyway, I have to say, good idea for a thread.

Seriously, it looks like a Walt Disney threw up while on drugs.
Haha, that's hideous.

And yeah, this topic could go on forever. In every concert there's at least two costumes that are totally awful. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... popper.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

That's sorta the point. >_> More board activity is a goooood thing, yes?

And I agree, yes? I never implied that the fact that this topic could go on forever was a negative thing. at all.
