Japanese rape sim. game makes its way to America
Ewwwwwwww
I can't even find the words to talk about how disturbing this is. I'm glad it got pulled (it was also pulled from Overstock & eBay), but I'm more disturbed by it's mere existence.
(Also, while this is a game from Japan, let's not let the discussion go the, "zomg, all Japanese people are sick fucks!" route.)

I've played one of those rape games before. It wasn't erotic at all (at least not to me ). It was kinda niche-y. You have to already be tired of stalking/raping to get off to these games. It wasn't really rape either; it was like, stalking and then you get to take her clothes off and jiggle her boobs around a bit.
Re: Japanese rape sim. game makes its way to America
Wow. The "expert's opinion" on the original news source's site was surprisingly refreshing.
I don’t think that it would make someone not so inclined to commit an illegal act more inclined or likely to commit a specific act.
However if people are already inclined to view the world this way it may reinforce their views and make it more likely they would undertake an illegal act. I suspect the will to do this would need to be there in the first place.

Is it weird that I guessed which game it was going to be when I read this topic?
Not that I've ever played Rapelay, of course. :T

But anyway.
Is this really that big of a deal that they pull it from their site if its not breaking any laws? Since when has Amazon had a moral conscience about what they sell? And why is this such a big deal that its getting brought to the US (if it really is)? The article clearly says that Amazon hasn't stated why they pulled it off, but maybe it was just a mistake that they listed it for sale on the American site in the first place? Is it even official that this game was licensed to be sold in America? Is the game even translated? The article says it was an "English version" but that's a little vague and they don't really back it up with anything. The cover and art for it still lists the title HUGE in Japanese characters then really small in romanji, which is what a lot of Japanese products do. I'm not sure what to make of this, also since this kind of stuff has been a big thing in Japan for probably around a decade, and the stuff is floating around all over the place. Its sold in retail stores over there, and not even specifically adult ones.

Re: Japanese rape sim. game makes its way to America
It was never licensed. It just ended up on amazon and some wanna-be reporter happened to see it and made a big stink. Amazon is so automated that virtually anything can be sold there if someone wants to. The screenshot of Amazon on that blog makes it clear that it was just a couple of marketplace sellers that had copies. The "cover" on the amazon page was clearly just a desktop wallpaper or something that someone uploaded on to Amazon. If it was translated, then it was most likely just a CD-R of one of the English patches floating around.

Simulators of armed assault, mutilation, premeditated mass murder, genocide, you name it, are A-OK, but a simulator of inconsensual sexual intercourse get pulled from the shelves? Oh the world... <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/nono.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':nono:' />

Yeeeaaahhh, I don't condone rape but really, this isn't a big deal at all. I can't imagine that it encourages guys to rape women any more than the GTA encourages guys to join a gang and kill random people on the street.

How is this that far off from the hentai rape videos that are on the market? I mean, go to any video store that carries that kind of thing and you will find hentai videos about violent rape and nonconsensual sex... How is that OK on a movie but not in a video game? Not that I am crusading for the game's release or anything but it's just a double standard. It's fine to watch cartoon girls get raped, as long as you aren't the director of the action? What? It's just silly.

I'm a person who totally disagrees on censorship etc.
However, there is a big difference wether one is involved in the on-screen action or not.

Really? Because I'm pretty sure enjoying the idea of rapin' ladies is still pretty fucked up. I get how a videogame could be seen as worse, but come on. You're sitting there and enjoying people being raped. There's not really a slidey scale where one end is more acceptable, just because in one you've got a hand on a controller and in the other you've got it on your wang.

This seems to take it a bit further.
I just read something about it that said you can get other male characters to join in on the attack.
They mention it in EmEl's link (3rd post of this thread)
"Players are also allowed to enter 'freeform mode' where they can rape any woman and get other male game characters to join the attacks."
They also said "If she does become pregnant you're supposed to force her to get an abortion, otherwise she gets more and more visibly pregnant each time you have sex"
The most interesting line was "If you allow the child to be born then the woman will throw you in front of a train!"
I like how they made the possibility for revenge.

Many people who accept action flicks think that shooters like Call of Duty are morally wrong because the consumer actually kills somebody (virtually).

Re: Japanese rape sim. game makes its way to America
I think killing people in super violent videogames is sort of more on level with horror or grotesque war movies than with action movies. People who really love gore movies and play violent videogames, same thing too. Feeling thrill from watching death. It just depends on the level of violence in either being equivalent, though. You can't really compare mainstream action flicks, where there's a relatively low level of directly shown violence, to a game where you watch people's limbs fly off.
There are people, though, who cringe when they watch those scenes in movies and therefore would never play games of them. Then there's people who find it thrilling and find playing those games not as offensive.
This is a silly argument, though, because there tends to be a level of detachment when you watch violence or play violent videogames. You don't sit there vividly imagining the person screaming and dying, how much pain they are in, etc. Sexual rape fantasies tend to be a lot more immersed, because you're getting off on it.

Never saw that in Call of Duty happen before...
I never wanted to justify sex-games (I'd rather watch some good ol' porn, without all the hassle ), I only wanted to say there's a difference between watching something and participate in something.
We can even go onto other examples with this, but I guess I made my point clear now.

That's pretty much how I feel; if someone is already actively seeking rape-related materials for their sexual fantasies I think they're already off the deep end. It's not that I don't think it's horrible, I just don't see how this is much worse than something like Cool Devices.
All a matter of perspective, though. Personally, I will stick to playing Dragon Quest V.

In my first year of high school, the leader of our anime club snuck tentacle porn past our moderator who was a priest. It wasn't very sexy.

Whee, I'm late.
I think this really is just an agree to disagree thing. I do get where you're coming from and see why this is a common idea, but I think the issue is you're looking at the act and I'm looking at the motivation. To me, actively immersing yourself into a virtual simulation of anything wrong for pleasure (i.e. pretending you are the one doing the bad, enjoying it, thinking details, etc.), be it rape or killing or whatever, beating kittens with sticks, means you're enjoying imagining doing something terrible. It doesn't much matter, to me, the form that the simulation takes. The level of immersion--or rather, the fact that you're immersing yourself and enjoying it--is what bothers me. This is why I felt the comparison to violent games was somewhat off, though I do think there are people who play violent games and think that way. I just think there's, you know, more detached-minded people playing Call of Duty than playing Rapelay.
I don't think your point is stupid at all, I'm just coming at it from a different angle. I did want to restate my point a little more concisely, though, instead of throwing word-vomit at you.
Also, you guys are hilarious. How is it you saw tentacle porn at a school club, and yet Gyp and I went to a dub-your-own-porn panel out of curiosity and saw little more than an animated nun looking whistful with scenery?
And, yes. It's pretty much the opposite of sexy. Would've been good to dub over with Voltron jokes, though.

Never saw that in Call of Duty happen before...[/quote]
It happens in CoD 5. A lot.

I didn't play WaW more than 2 missions and until that point in the game it didn't look like there was a bigger gore level, that's what I made my assumption on.
However, I don't consider the mediocre crap treyarch produces as real Call of Duty games, eventhough it has the name on the box.
Besides, World at War is not CoD 5.

There hasn't been a real CoD since Call of Duty 2

CoD 4 certainly is a real CoD, it's made by Infinity Ward.

Re: Japanese rape sim. game makes its way to America
Is everyone going to cry? 5 (or WaW, most stores and people call it 5) isn't nearly as bad as 3, even though both are by Treyarch. 2 and 4 are definitely the most stable of them all, but 5 did a lot of things right, while obviously having its major faults as well, but the faults weren't overwhelming. And I'm talking about single player, because I don't play the CoD games online. Though, I played 3 on system link one time with about 9 people and it was fantastic, so I at least think they got that aspect of them right since 3, only problem is I don't enjoy that aspect of them very much. This discussion should probably be moved, though I know as soon as it gets moved, no one will talk about it anymore. Also, I don't see how you could miss the gore level in 5 unless you really weren't paying attention, cause its very obvious.

'RapeLay' video game goes viral amid outrage
By Kyung Lah, CNN
March 30, 2010 1:22 p.m. EDT
Tokyo, Japan (CNN) -- The game begins with a teenage girl on a subway platform. She notices you are looking at her and asks, "Can I help you with something?"
That is when you, the player, can choose your method of assault.
With the click of your mouse, you can grope her and lift her skirt. Then you can follow her aboard the train, assaulting her sister and her mother.
As you continue to play, "friends" join in and in a series of graphic, interactive scenes, you can corner the women, rape them again and again.
The game allows you to even impregnate a girl and urge her to have an abortion. The reason behind your assault, explains the game, is that the teenage girl has accused you of molesting her on the train. The motive is revenge.
When does a video game go too far?
It is little wonder that the game, titled RapeLay, sparked international outrage from women's groups. Taina Bien-Aime helped yank the game off store shelves worldwide.
"This was a game that had absolutely no place on the market," said Taina Bien-Aime of women's rights organization Equality Now which has campaigned for the game to be taken off the shelves.
But the controversy that led to stopping sales of the game instead took it viral.
That was how Lucy Kibble and Jim Gardner in Britain heard about it.
"I think the idea that you can do it by wholesale banning is just never going to work anyway because we downloaded it for free off the Internet," Gardner said.

I was going to write "So they made an article about an old game just because a pair in britain downloaded it ?", but then I saw there's more on the cnn page. The videos summarizes what happened quite well.
Well, my opinion hasn't changed about it.
