From H!O News UFA is holding a contest where they provide the source material and you make the PV!

FINALLY UFA WILL HAVE A MM VIDEO THAT DOESN'T SUCK!!!!

Well only if you make it.

I have -some- video editing skills but I doubt I can do anything super amazing with this, especially since I'm not very well-versed (read: not at all) in creating original animations. But maybe I'll just make something for the heck of it.

Edit: it's for 3 2 1 Breaking Out only... Hmm... Worth it.

Do you think they'd agree to let me borrow the girls to shoot a story scene? My arrogant artistic vision goes beyond the "Variety" shots. Although the 6th one for each girl is pretty awesome and ridiculous. So many things can be done with girls falling on their faces while trying to run away from some green-screened monstrosity.

I haven't had the chance to download any of the clips yet, but from the descriptions it sounds like the standard H!P PV set up (dance + close up) and a little bit of added silliness. That kind of limits people's creativity to a degree, but then again the green screen allows for people to do some potentially really cool effects. This is such a fun idea, I hope the whole "myspace" as a judge thing means we'll have tons of cool PVs to vote on <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':eyecrazy:' /> Come on wotas! Show us how much free time you have to learn complex video editing techniques!

I decided to join this contest though I haven't listened to MM in awhile~ (Don't hate me, I still have their songs on my comp!), but my skill in this field is pretty good for me to stand a chance at winning! But most of the complaining comes from the face that the PVs only really switch from dance shot to close-ups, right? So unless people make liberal use of the "Variety" clips with some good greenscreen work, they won't be able to really do much more than the standard PV. Or perhaps some enterprising wota will set some new, creative standard for cutting between dance shots!

I'm not sure about translation, but if you look at all the close-up clips, you can kind of see which girls are singing for which lines. The Dohhhup video helpfully comprises all the close-ups in a single video.

Yeah, I think the key is going to be what people do with the backgrounds. Theoretically, one could do an entire in-depth animation, and you know -somebody- out there has enough skill/time on their hands to do it.

Looking at the rules, they seem to imply that we can use any video owned by Up-Front Works (since they wouldn't be considered a "third party"), unless they fall under the "contents which violates the rights of others in the submitted work" part of the clause (does it?).

* Contestants are free to use and edit video footage filmed or produced by the contestant, and are not limited to having to use the video materials provided. However, please be careful not to use any works, company names, product names with copyright belonging to a third party, or use any contents which violates the rights of others in the submitted work. In addition, please do not use any contents which violate the privacy of others (video footages of others without obtaining their permission), publicize personal information (including contents that specify personal names and locations).

I bet that there will be at least one submission where the submitter just keeps the green screen in the background.

I don't understand why they didn't make a complete package of all the videos...

At first I was interested, since my last video editing project was several months ago and I really want to make something new for some time, but downloading EVER. SINGLE. VIDEO. SEPERATELY. is a pain in the ass that I don't want to join in feeling, especially at only ~50kb I get from that source.

Are people supposed to exchange the green screen btw ?

I'm going to try to put something together but I'll probably use footage of myself like I did for the Melon PV. Yes that was Air Vocal, but for this one I'm really not sure if you can use other Morning Musume clips. Yes they are owned by UFA, but because of strange licensing it's probably hit or miss what clips etc will be considered third party.

I'd probably just keep the green screen, because I have no clue how to turn that into a background and no time to learn, though I really hope they allow some of the entries to be publicly seen as I'd love to see what wacky backgrounds people come up with.

I tried to take a crack at it today, but with the combination of my computer being so-so for video editing, the VAST amount of materials to work with, and the sub-par green screen, I just couldn't do anything. Maybe tomorrow, but not today.

For those who want to remove the green screen, many video editing software has "keying" or "chroma keying" filters that take out green/blue screens. Using the default key filter on After Effects looked really bad, but another filter (Light Key I believe...) did a decent job. Unfortunately for the fans here, the green screen isn't consistent enough for everyday filters (i.e many default/built-in filters) to work painlessly, which many fans would like. It definitely takes some tweaking. Even getting the green screen out of my footage left the girls' skin semi-transparent, but my computer's mood wasn't putting me in a good position to experiment.

For those upset at having to download the videos individually, consider using DownThemAll or other similar extensions/download managers. DownThemAll is a Firefox extension that lists all media and objects in and linked to in webpages. You can apply preset or custom filters to retrieve multiple, specific objects rather easily and quickly.

If I end up doing this, I'm gonna try to do more than having just cuts, but I still really don't know what I can do with the song. I wish this would come up in August when I get my new computer and I can work fresh and clean instead of on my nicely aged desktop...

[UPDATE] Extra technical information! The .mp3 file located on the source files page has roughly 13 frames of silence in a 30fps video. It may not seem like much, but that's almost a half of a second off! Just thought that would be a nice little tip for those working in an editor that may not show waveforms (coughcoughadobeafftereffectscoughcough).

I'll probably end up with something in this format too, since there's no way I'm gonna go through the trouble of getting rid of those green screens either. So don't feel alone! Probably won't bother entering it though, I'll just upload it on youtube like you did.

@Zounder: Hehe I uppe dit ot MySpace Video (But their quality jsut blows) so I upped to YouTube as well. And hehe that echo effect, I was thinking if I wanted to use it or not as I had a feeling I might have overdone it. But in the end, it adds a nice touch.

Hehe I hope I don't get flamed for htis but.. I think the creativity of the greenscreen really ruins it for many users...

Reasons:

- The software costs a BUNCH (This is through the assumption you don't torrent it/ get it illegally)

But yeah if they gave a backgroudn to the videos, I think it's much 'fair-er' so to speak to just crop/add effects to the videos. Sure it semi- requires programs that cost $$ BUT at the same time for simple editing, there are freeware for that.

That's my rant on it... But then again, I guess with soooooooooooo many options just makes it 'funner' for the creative mind... But lol, I like the greenscreen (which is sorta a reason I didn't want to mask it... As lol masking it to a plain color would ruin it more than the greenscreen)

I'd almost say that they should have done this years ago when they could've gotten more entries, but computers are faster now and people will be able to do way more because of it.
