So I experimented with the green screen using Sony Vegas 9.0 Platinum, and it appears that the default chroma keying tool does a decent job. The closeups look nice, though some of the dance shots have problems due to the non-green portions at the bottom of the screen. But I'm sure there's some way to get rid of it. I think I'm gonna give this a shot!

(EDIT: Upon further examining, I'm running into the same issues Neshcom has, either transparency or green-tinted ladies. Still, there's gotta be a way to adjust it.)
Hehe I hope I don't get flamed for htis but.. I think the creativity of the greenscreen really ruins it for many users...

Reasons:

- The software costs a BUNCH (This is through the assumption you don't torrent it/ get it illegally)
Very true, but they probably want people who actually have used video editing software and not people who just grab it for the contest.

They want good PVs, they're already experts on making crappy ones.

Gosh, if this is what they normally use as a green screen then those people are like awesome. I just tried to key out the dance shot and it was hopeless. The close-ups I have a better chance, but the dance shot is near worthless if you plan on keying it out.

EDIT: Premiere does a MUCH better job keying out compared to after effects.

Okay, this is about all I can get out of it

Image

the girls are about 95% intact throughout the dance shot and the close-up can get good results, but still with a green rim around.

Not too sure I want to pursue this further, seems like even more work if I try to key anything

Well what did you expect with a low-res compressed source? Can only do this much with it, and I'm sure they do realise that having their original raw footage (HD or not) to compare with. I didn't touch this footage yet, but got very similar results when I was messing around with the Special Generation PV long time ago:

I gave up on doing anything further because it looked like crap overall. However, if that's the source that we are given here, I'm not gonna care about it even if it turns into compression-artefact-fest. In fact the rough idea that's sprouting in my mind requires liberal amounts of zooming in which will look like such a lovely disaster.

So they have started posting videos already submitted on their myspace page... so far, I count 2 videos that don't have the green background. >_>

here's one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iO9ktFwQNA (Not mine, for clarification)

This is the best so far at eliminating the green screen. I can just about nearly replicate the close-up shot qualities here but I dunno how they're getting that bright glow around the dance shot portions. I think it also helps that this author used backgrounds that kind of "blend" with the green screen in some places.

Pay attention on the close up of Takahashi/Reina's hats =P Good work without the greenscreen and very innovative despite the flaws at some parts.

Well, there is one on myspace that is nothing but video of trains. It's kind of boring, but I'm sure an original idea would work if it matches the song.

Here's my fanmade PV of 321 breakin out

I guess many people are working hard on their vids, they'll probably appear on myspace near the end of the contest. I think that some hardcore fans may surprise us with awesome videos.

I don't know, you kind of have to be a fan to even know about Morning Musume and their contest. But anyway, I hope that there will be awesome videos that can kick UFA's ass. Maybe the artists at UFA get stimulated to create more original PV's for their girls.

My first thought was that the winning entry probably won't be one of the better ones. To me, it seems likely that they'll pick something that feeds straight back into their oft-questionable brand.

Surfing around YouTube for the ones that people have done so far has produced... questionable results, but some incredibly ironic! ones too. Think I'll go dick around NicoNico and see what I can scrounge up.

edit: My lack of a fundamental understanding of Japanese is... making NicoNico difficult. I got the account because my friend spams me with Hetalia links, I don't really know how to use the site... anyone with better Japanese wanna try?

It's not NicoNico being difficult, I think there's just nothing there (yet).

The entries have to go on Myspace, so I checked there and there's a few non western entries.

I imagine the godly video editors will post videos much later.

The only advantage to turning in a video early is getting Takahashi & Sayumi to flip out over your cute video.

watching the entries on Dohhh UP!

Also, Jun & Lin watching

I saw one worth noting. It's a Korean entry.

They used a cellphone emoticon and interface concept with the dance shot and close up scenes. It's kind of cute.

3 2 1 B O!

^ The korean one was pretty orginal compared to the rest. That is going to win so far.

The should have given up those black guys from melon kinenbi to work with.

This looks cool. But why did they choose to upload to myspace. I have myspace or facebook account. I just might have to make one for now and delete it later.

That's what a lot of people are doing, actually. It shouldn't be too big a deal since it takes maybe two minutes of your time to create an account.

I liked that one, but it was horribly spastic and too much grainy filter. Major points on being both humorous and original. But it was a little difficult on the eyes. And brain.

Wow, I loved the cell phone one, but this video game-style one just blew me away!!

Incredibly original, the style went with the music perfectly, and it was really funny to boot!

It was grainy, but the graininess went with the style and also eliminated the green screen problems rampant in most videos.

I'm gonna go watch it again now. 8o

That one's definately my favorite so far. The colors and grainy-ness are a little obnoxious but it's the first one I've seen to actually make use of the random silly footage they gave instead of just going with the typical H!P dance shot / close up alternation. Plus like BeForJess said, I'm not distracted by how it looks like Sayumi is missing part of her leg or half the members have green hair like I am with the rest of the PVs

That... was awesome...

The paint effects were really nice. Overall, however, I found it more to be a "technical" impress than a "creativity" impress.

Damn, that is not only THE best green screen removal I've seen, but also very creative and incredibly professional looking. Not as funny as the video game themed one, but what amazing effects, with the color splashes...

I'll bet it'll be quite tough for them to decide on a winner. I don't even know what I'd pick anymore.
