I have learned by watching this concert that Sayumi is a lesbian... I might do a review later.

The vast improvement over last year's Spring Concert is very noticeable. Last year, they seemed unsure of themselves as a group. This year, they're comfortable with themselves as a unit, as well as their abilities.

I bounced around this concert on youtube and it's really one of my favorites. The Disco medley is easily the best rearrangedmedleymajig they've ever done- they've been experimenting with rearrangements of their songs for concerts before and this one was awesome. I want that jazzy Sexy Boy! And a high quality Aozora with LinLin's opening, which continues to make me feel like a natural woman. The Jounetsu blahblahblah song performance was really good. I wanted Takahashi to go all Britney Spears on the chair but it was still funny watching them molest it tenderly.

When I saw those Guru Guru Jump costumes, I was tempted to stand up and start clapping. Congratulations, H!P! You've done it! You've finally done it! You've made the WORST OUTFITS EVER. I'm pretty sure they were designed by Dr. Suess.

Kousui was the worst idea ever, though I was surprised that JunJun could do the vocalizations at the end. They weren't the BEST, but they were on pitch. I really want her to be a good singer, but it looks like she'll never get past "I can hit the notes!" stage and not ever hit "I can employ vibrato, flair, style, and emotion!"

And uuuh . . . this youtube fest was a long time ago, I don't remember much else. Oh but Songs WAS cool, as was the IDEA behind It's You only Sayumi was still singing and dancing so you know. What can you do.

My copy of the concert just arrived. Don't know when I'll get a chance to watch it in one sitting, but I'm really looking forward to it.

^ Well, with W and GAM graduated, H!P was severely lacking in the pseudo-lesbian department. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... stling.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I love Takahashi's reaction to the kiss! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':danceman:' />

You know what? This performance changed my mind about this song. Sayumi totally owns this shit, and I don't think it would be nearly as good with anyone else singing it. Yeah, it would be technically better, but that doesn't always equate to better, if you know what I mean. "It's You" is the highlight of this concert so far. If that changes for me, I'll update, but it's gonna be tough to beat. It's the first MM performance that has made me smile in years.

EDITS: The medley is one of the best MM medleys I can remember. It seems like they actually thought about the flow of the whole rather than just cutting and pasting a bunch of shit together, although I always cringe when I see one of the newer iterations of MM trying to pull off "Love Machine". The Jazzy intro to "Sexy Boy" is tasty -- I'd love to hear a full version remix like that -- and they made better use of the video screen than I can ever remember, too. Whichever Panda it is that solos towards the end is killer. She's the best singer in the group. Better than Takahashi.

Thanks for letting Koharu murder my favorite MKB song. Fucking cocksuckers. That actually pissed me off. Totally harshed my buzz. Just when I was digging watching MM again, they have to go and do this. God, I fucking hate Koharu Kusumi.

I never would have expected how much "How Do You Like Japan" would suffer minus Hitomi and Makoto, but damned if it doesn't suffer a shitload.

This show really went downhill after the medley. Some strange song selections and, where Koharu was nearly invisible before the medley, she's fairly ubiquitous after it. And she's the anti-Midas, because everything she touches turns to shit. If she graduated tomorrow, I would totally follow MM more closely, because the rest of the group seems pretty cool.

Sayu's solo is the highlight of the show, followed closely by the medley that follows it.

Agreed x 100 on that one!!

I've only seen a few of the videos so far, but I was very impressed - and what a great intro SONGS was!! I wasn't sure how it would come off without the digitized voice effects all over the place but they did it well and it was a great performance!

... Gotta go watch the rest now, I'm really curious to see It's You now.

You mean Linlin's opening of "Aozora ga..."? She has a solo on the recent H!P cover album if you missed it.

Speaking of the Pandas,
Aika's solo was way better than the recorded version. Why did they give her that bow?
I love the recorded version, so this one only suffers because of her ugly outfit. However, it's saved by the goofy backup Panda dancin'.

What's the first thing you do when you return home after a concert?

LinLin: "I stop thinking and stare into nothingness."

These are all incorrect. I only saw a few songs on here the other day when fpd was watching them at my house, but I already made these observations.

You must have watched a different concert. Or watched it with the sound turned down. Or swallowed hallucinogens prior to watching it. Or all three. I'm guessing it was all three.

You know, I read your review and totally agree with what you said about the editing taking a 180. Anyone else notice that or just us super cool film people? I'd be really interested to know if there was a new editor or director on board and who he is and what else he's done (or her, even, but I have a feeling the Japanese film scene is even more dominated than Hollywood's. Just a hunch). I almost want to say it was the BEST edited concert I'd seen, but I haven't watched the whole thing and most of my H!P concert watchin' days were pre-film studies, meaning I didn't know a match cut from a medium shot and was just like "Pretty gurlz."

Totally smell what you're stepping in, Sayu's got that cute girl with a bite thing down and I LOVE that about her. I love the idea of taking her character and having her be a little sexy and naughty because I think she can pull it off. It's just that It's You was a little . . . I think it really WAS written and tailored for her, but they should. Try again. Like the notes were in her range but everything else about that song didn't quite fit. Like it needed some gumdrop sounds or something for it to REALLY fit her cute-but-edgey thing. And her performance felt a little awkward to me, like she's not quite used to or confident in acting sexy. I like the idea of Sayu doing more things like this but think it needs to be dealt with a little differently and she needs to grow into it. Otherwise, it would be all kinds of awesome fun.

Yeah, in general I feel like this year they're understanding how to use sayu -oh that joke haunts even in 2009.

Her lines in Naichau Kamo were memorable and not in the sense that it was out of place.

Then she got to sing in Yowamushi, and I actually missed hearing her echoing Risa at the P9D concert.

Its You of course on the album.

Decent lines in Shoganai and her lines in Aki Urara definitely add to the song.

What AEUG? You began by saying "these are all incorrect", but you ended by saying you "already made these observations", what part had your observations and what part was incorrect? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nfused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

I'm just glad that she finally seems to have carved out a role for herself beyond cute-vapid-chick-with-no-musical-game. Rika was able to settle into a role rather quickly with essentially the same skill set, albeit a stronger personality, but Sayu was never gonna be the new Rika. With AKB 48 singing songs about fucking random guys on the street after school, H!P can unleash Naughty Loli Sayumi on the world, and she won't be half as controversial as MM's main competition. Just do it.
