well, THAT was out of the blue. Sounds like she just looked over at Umeda Erika and thought it'd be nice to recycle the same reasons (modelling, coming of age). I don't think she's as photogenic as Umeda, but she's reasonably tall enough to work.
Vocally, I think it's a great idea. Maybe Tsunku got tired of training her to sing, UFA was fed up with too much auto-tune - at any rate, I'm delighted at the prospect of hearing less dipthongs butcher the live singing. (There isn't anything wrong with dipthongs, inherently; but it sounds like mispronouncing a word too much.)
Image-wise, this might hurt MM for a bit. Koharu was the most crackpot of them all, and without her, MM is headed even more towards the Serious and Mature path (along the way of occasional silliness, like Kimagure Princess and Resonant Blue's B-side) without her. They might need to rely on Sayu and Linlin for doing crackpot things. Sayu's been making a name for herself as being vicious-tongued on the variety shows (namely, London Hearts) but she's mainly doing a solo act. MM is a bit bland as a group, so I'm really hoping there'll be something new, maybe Aika being more agressive?
Anime-wise, I think it was past time for a change of the guard. Let's face it, UFA has been really trying to push H!P into doing anime-related work, either in voice-acting (see: Risa, Reina, Eri, & Linlin) or in providing image songs (... see Berryz, Buono, Eggs, although Meguru Koi no Kisetsu was used for a theme song in the past). So the loss of Koharu isn't too bad, now that they've got Eggs promoting Shugo Chara. But it seems Koharu did a great job with Kirarin Revolution, more than anyone expected, and it pretty much sets the bar for future anime tie-ins.
In the end, I'm sort of indifferent and secretly glad that Koharu's going, which gives the group more maturity (in average age, it should be edging even closer to 20 now) and more consistency. But their consistency/ current image isn't... exciting enough.
So, should we expect 9th gen auditions next semester, now that the Era of the Miracle is dying? What's the new Korean member doing these days?

This wasn't really a surprise. Everyone in my wota community thought there would be a graduation sometime this year and a few people's journals on mixi commented this morning how they dreaded the first day of the concert as they knew if there was going to be an announcement it'd be made today. And it was. I saw it on the HP site almost as soon as it was posted.
Atleast it's not Ai-chan. And next to Ai, Koharu was the logical one to graduate. Even though Kirarin has ended she has a huge career outside of HP with her Ohastar work. And she has done some modeling shoots before. It is getting kinda suspicious that they're graduating her from HP as well, but who knows maybe she'll end up in M-Line just to throw us all for a curveball. I have been wondering if people who graduate Morning Musume will still stick around HP so if she ends up moving to Mline it shows that that's going to be the next logical step for any graduate, and if not it makes me wonder what's going on in UFA to make so many girls want to jump shift.

Everyone knew a graduation was coming, it sucks but it was going to happen, I like 9nin Musume but I don't think 8nin Musume will be any different since it's only lost dead weight, Koha had personality but it's not like Momusu are on many shows anymore anyway, and I don't think she was very active as a solo personality (for example - Sayu), was she? Plus I found her personality to be annoying and forced anyway.

Fucking awful. I always had the sense that Koharu would be one of the girls who stays around forever because she's popular, has a presence, and genuinely looks like she loves what she does.

I'm actually REALLY surprised that Koharu's leaving! I thought for sure it would be Eri (no offense to anyone, I like Eri, but I figured with the whole age thing and having Ai/Risa/Reina constantly be lead singers...) Wow, Koharu sure didn't last long. I'm not upset that she's leaving, to be honest. The only thing I really enjoyed about her was how pretty she is becoming (I can't wait to see her new photobook, some of those shots look fantastic).
So her becoming a model is the most logical decision. Her voice, when she joined, definitely had potential, but it never went anywhere... And as for personality? I guess I never saw enough video clips of her to see what kind of personality she had.

According to the translation, she is indeed moving to M-Line and will continue training with Tsunku to make a solo debut at some point. The modeling thing is her own aspiration.

Regarding 7th Generation Morning Musume Member "Kusumi Koharu"
At the final performance of of the "Morning Musume Concert Tour 2009 Autumn ~ Nine Smile ~" (Dec 6), 7th generation Morning Musume member Kusumi Koharu will be graduating from Morning Musume, and from Hello!Project. During the 4 years and 4 months she was in Morning Musume, she has learnt the basics as a singer and a talent. And next year, she will turn 18. She's come to learn the base of what it takes to work in a group. And at the same time, she's been working as "Tsukishima Kirari". Based on seeing all of her work so far, as a producer, I felt I wanted to let her have a solo career, so decided to have her graduate. Having said that, she won't be making a singing debut or any other kind of debut right away, and some of the plans are still a bit rough, but Kusumi will continue to work hard for now, while privately taking various lessons. Her own hope is to be a model, so I think she'll be aiming towards a new direction, and taking new steps. So everybody who has supported her so far, please continue to give your support to Kusumi Koharu, and to Morning Musume. Thank you very much!

I've been with Morning Musume for around 4 years now, and at the December 6 Morning Musume concert at Tokyo Kouseinen Kinkaikan, I will be graduating from Morning Musume, and from Hello!Project. One of the things I want to do from now is to try modelling. I have been active in Morning Musume so far, but now as Kusumi Koharu, I want to move forward, facing my different dreams and goals. Pfff, I'm absolutely ecstatic. Good riddance, I hated her singing, her fake bubbly personality and her horse face. I'm practically dancing in my chair at the prospect of not having to have her lines make me shudder during an otherwise wonderful song. Woo hoo!!

Never could get the singing thing down, but her importance business-wise, was great. She picked up the slack in the kids segment when mini moni left the scene. In a way, she set up HPE for their success, just like mini moni paved the way for HPK. She was never my favorite, but she always did her best in whatever project she was in.

This comes 4 years too late, but at least I won't have to hear her voice anymore, when listening to songs.
Thinking about it, it's kinda sad that I don't care too much anymore. I used to hate her with passion (she's still my #1 disliked person in H!P of course), but with MM doing nearly nothing comedic or in shows again, my interested has, as Zaeleus said, just dwindled.

No one should be surprised by this, Maki graduated pretty much the same way (and with about a zillion times more talent.) As someone who learned to avoid Koharu's solo projects from back when her FIRST album came out, I'm not affected one way or the other by the prospect of a solo career. And while part of me is glad she's leaving H!P (Morning Musume in particular,) I'm also quite aware that her absence only opens the door for yet another talentless schoolgirl that Tsunku thinks he can mold into a star.

I really don't think Koharu's situation can be compared to Maki. While Maki was doing solo work before leaving MM, she was genuinely a good singer and was popular beyond belief. Koharu on the other hand, is not a good singer, and her solo career was co-existent with the anime, which has long ended. Unless she like, starts doing seiyuu work again, then I don't think we'll be seeing her do more solo music.

I am very surprised at this! Didn't they say they wanted to be a old group with a new identity and wanted to stick together (and that's why they didn't want to really want to have an audition) during Anime Expo? But, I am sad about it because I first hated Koharu when she first joined but I gradually loved her over time. Well, now MM is almost completely worthless. All they need to do now is send the pandas back to China and then they'll be 100% completely worthless and uninteresting. Way to go, H!P. I hope she at least does something after this.

The announcement from Tsunku is really vague, though. He outright says that he's not sure what he's going to do with her and just says that she's taking "lessons." I don't really . . . care, honestly, inspite of adoring every bone in Koharu's spazzy little body. I'm mostly sad to see the 9nin streak die. At least we got two albums with the same line-up! WOOO! But like it's been said . . . somewhere, maybe not here, but while the pie chart of MM personality is half Sayu, equal parts Koha, JunJun, Linlin and a tiiiiny sliver for the rest we don't actually get to SEE that often these days and let's face it guys, never will. Bye, Kusumi. Thanks for this clip, HattenxJoy, and warming up Sayaka Kitahara and Yuu Kikkawa for their eventual membership into Morning Musume now there's an opening. I hope you drop the forced anime singing voice and grow into a better one.

Yeah, there might be something unplanned about her graduation. Not necessarily a "scandal" per se, but the fact that her graduation isn't at a big venue is kind of strange.
