Petit, I was inspired by you, but my writing can't compare. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... pyeyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Entry for March 17th, 2010: I've been researching on this island for nearly 7 years, but none of my past encounters could prepare me for this...

One night, I spotted 8 or 9 natives dancing frantically against a backdrop of a very bright moon. There must have been some sort of celebration. Look at this electrifying dance. It seems as though the eldest of the group leads this one. She honors the moon with a very dramatic call coupled with an original dance. Such an entrancing tune. I found myself at times dancing along, even if I didn't fully understand the significance. Oh, the one with the chubby cheeks uses a shell to make her singing echo.

Now they are changing their pattern. This dance seems to honor a girl who may be leaving soon. There is a certain hint of royalty, especially implied by the sound of the elder of the group.

The next song is extremely happy and energetic. I am somewhat reminded of another tribal group's music pattern. This seems to be more complex. The next most powerful of the tribe have prominent roles in this portion. They must be the most experienced.

Oh, now they're slowing down substantially. It's so sweet, almost enough to bring one to tears. What's this, louder now, and chanting with so much passion. Seems like a full effort from everyone. This is so exciting! I'm confused, it slowed down again. Now, for a very sweet conclusion with minimal instrumental elements, and an emphasis on vocals.

This appears to be a very proud dance, but seems to relate to a woman's restraint. The music reminds me of a very common sound that I heard on this island around 2004.

I'm amazed by this sound, and by only 3 of the members of this tribe.

Oh, there's the chubby one with her shell again. I feel as though I've heard this sound in the past also. Oh, she put her shell down for this part. She sounds fine without it. The oldest of this bunch is really getting into it. Such an impressive display.

The tribe leader and the second in command are next. I've read about such things but never imagined that I would witness it. I thought this style ended with the last of the Sun and Moon tribe, back in late 2000. It's so beautiful, few are so fortunate to experience this.

Oh, here is the leader again, followed by the girl who was wished good luck in the royal dance from earlier. I've observed that they pair experienced, with less experienced in this ritual. Many of remaining parts follow this pattern. It works well somehow. After a moment of silence, the one who carries a shell, whispers something softly.

The three remaining members are featured in this part of the celebration. There is so much energy, yet they have not been a part of this tribe for as long as the others. I sense that from this sound that at least two came from very far away, yet the song seems to be most significant to the remaining girl.

Now everyone is in unison, but they are singing to the young one who is leaving the tribe. All other members have a role, almost equally. It's very sweet and I imagine that I will remember this song for a long time.

A very interesting formation, the 9 are arranged as though they are relaying a secret message to one another. Some patterns remind me of the earliest trio's performance.

Perfect! My theory has been proven. The two who have been in the tribe for the least amount of time are leading the conclusion to the ritual, and from the sound of it, they definitely traveled very far before settling in this village. It's beautiful, the younger one has so much talent, but I really enjoy the voice of the other.

Ah, it's morning at last.

Tiny little album review. I demand to be first!

Full one probably coming this week.

1; Moonlight Night ~Tsukiyo no Ban da yo~ Hot hot hot hot. I love it better than "SONGS..." The beginning with the "ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY PART ONE" is kinda odd, but that synth is just...wow. I just wished they hadn't recycled the "HO HO HO!" from "Kimagure," especially considering that it's the next song on the album.

2; Kimagure Princess It's grown on me since it was first released. I really really love the song. I just can't stand the video or the album covers, nor can I stand how I can't sing Reina's or Eri's lines without cracking my voice.

3; Genki Pikappika! Ick. I don't like how they randomly stole the synth from "EVERYDAY Zekkochou!!!" or whatever (cba to go look up the right spelling). I see myself skipping this track a lot.

4; Namidacchi I quite like this one. I wasn't expecting the rap. That makes me so happy.

5; Onna ga Medatte Naze Ikenai I used to like this song, but now I just...it's one of those songs you like, but get tired of after a while. I think it's this year's "Nanchatte Renai" for me."

6; Ookii Hitomi It's like it's straight out of an episode of Yo Gabba Gabba!. I'm not really that keen on it. I think if I listen to it more...

7; Ano Hi ni Modoritai Hmm. I actually quite like this one. Atleast better than the songs that Ai/Risa(/Reina) had on P9D.

8; Nanchatte Renai Think "Aki Urara" would've made a better single. but hey sayu solo lines

9; Osaka Oishiinen 10 My Me's "Guruguru JUMP!" for sure. Do not like. Do not like at all. Also, I think there's a stunning lack of Kansai-ben. But Jun and Lin. <3

10; Loving you forever It's growing on me, but I do think it should've been a slower song.

11; Shouganai Yume Oibito LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SINGLE. The video, the music, the everything. <33

12; Ame no Furanai blahblahblah IT'S IN CHINESE OKAY *cough* So so so much love. I'm glad it turned out to be a Jun/Lin solo like everyone was wanting.

I'm disappoint in the lack of solos and 3 2 1 BREAKIN OUT! :c

But otherwise, it seems to be a nice album. I'll listen to it more later.

01. Moonlight night ~月夜の晩だよ~ - It's not BAD, but it's just not much of anything really. Certainly not something I'd start off an album with. Weakest album intro since 3rd Love Paradise.

03. 元気ピカッピカッ! - The intro gave me the impression that this'd be a brighter, peppier song than it turned out to be. Something about it just isn't catchy enough for me.

04. 涙ッチ - Probably my favorite of the new album songs. The majority of the song is Morning Musume performing as they perform best: as a GROUP. Nobody's given the chance to show how inadequate a singer they are by having solo lines, and I think it'd be in everyone's best interests if the majority of future songs are perfomed this way. Even the accapella ending sounds great.

06. 大きい瞳 - Ahahahahaha, Sayumi autotuned.

07. あの日に戻りたい - I like this despite Risa, but wish it had a stronger groove. It's a fairly solid AC JPop song, but it'd really benefit from a more club-style bass & rhythm track.

09. 大阪 美味いねん - Oh I don't know what's funnier, whoever does the intro & spoken lines (I'm assuming Aika, since singing's too much of a strain for her) or whichever (presumed) panda's using the "deep" and "strong" vocal "style". Could be a fun song, but nobody's vocals are doing anyone any favors here.

10. Loving you forever - If there's one thing that brings any JPop song to a screeching halt, it's mispronounced english. Or in this case, english that flows improperly with the wrong syllables stressed. Maybe it's just me, but when I hear "loVIIING you FOR-e-VER" I just can't get past it unchallenged. Otherwise it's a good song that I would've expected to close the album...

12. 雨の降らない星では愛せないだろう? (中国語Ver.) - ...but instead this does, and it would actually be a really effective ending if it just ended at 3:44 on that last vocal line & not have that befuddling piano & strings add-on that just totally robs the last line of it's power. Yes, the original was that way too, but y'know what? I edited that out of original & put that edit on my iPod in place of the original & it's eighty times more impressive.

As for the singles, I liked all of them except for Onna ga Medatte Naze Ikenai, that one was just kinda okay. Overall the album's probably worth the $17 the U.S. release cost me, but just barely. Namidacchi's the only truly great new song & the rest are fair-to-pretty-good.

I know for sure the opening spoken lines are Linlin, but not sure about the supposedly strong vocal style. I'd be willing to bet that's Lin again though because I don't know what UFA thought they were doing with trying to make her badass on that song anyway...

More on topic: I actually really like the album tracks, but I could picture each and every one being a B-side to any of the given singles featured here. Since their B-sides tend to be more mainstream pop/R&B lately, I can't help but get that discarded-B-side vibe from a lot of them.

"Lubbing You Foreba" is my current jam though. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Something about Ooki Hitomi really appeals to me too, but the INSANE Sayu-processing is so excessive that it distracts me when I'm listening to it.

Yeah the intro, outro, and "strong" vocals are all LinLin. I actually think it makes the song worse too.

Somehow I managed not to listen to any previews, and this definitely improved the experience. Here goes:

01. Moonlight night etc. - I know I will love this song, hell, I already do, but it's still a huge letdown after the fantastic SONGS, genki+, and How do you like Japan from the previous albums. It's kinda like SONGS meets genki+ meets happy pills. Which gives it a worrying amount of Minimoni-like vibes, and Minimoni silliness is NOT what I want on my MM album. Thankfully it's not enough to take away its potential to be played on repeat for hours on end.

03. Genki pika pika! - way too genki and pika pika for my taste. Also terribly generic. Guaranteed insta-skip material.

04. Namidacchi - slow intro blasting into a rockish tune, where did I hear that before? Not great but definitely likeable.

06. Ooki hitomi - even the funky bass synth in the background and the 2:55-3:25 bridge can't save it from the genericness oozing from just about every note. Also delicious autotune. However on the 4th listen of the album I'm starting to find myself strangely drawn to this one. I'll just think of it as a guilty pleasure of sort.

07. Ano hi etc. - I wrote it off as a major yawnfest at first, but after few listens it's actually pretty pleasant. The acid-y bits remind me of Akino Arai's Kouseki Radio album. Actually I wouldn't bet my life that they weren't sampled from that very album, but I don't have it at hand right now to check.

08. Nanchatte renai - mentioned just because I love it so much. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/wub.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' />

09. Osaka umainen - wacky randomness in everyone's favourite dialect. Won't be listening to it on its own intentionally, and I'll actually be much closer to removing it from the playlist when listening to a whole album.

10. Loving you forever - epic/nostalgic obvious concert ending-type song. Pleasant enough to be pretty listenable, but with a great potential to be very quick beaten to death *cough*dekkai*cough*.

12. Ame no furanai etc. - I love the song and even this being the Nth version released ain't gonna change it. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/hmph.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Overall a good album, a step below Platinum 9 though, and oscillating minimally above and below Sexy 8.

I listened to all of "Ookii Hitomi" last night while working on my full review, and I was SOOOOOOOOOOOO PISSED.

I understand Sayu's not the strongest of vocalists, but does she really deserve the treatment Ke$ha gets?

After a few listens I've decided that I don't need to do a song by song review for this album, as I can sum up damn near every song with the same nine words: it's not horrible, but it's not really good, either. Nothing stands out at all, and it's probably the most one-note album MM has ever released, but that die was pretty much cast by the lackluster singles that preceded it. I don't see me listening to this album much more than I listen to Ai no Dai Shit Kan or Shitty 8 Beat. It looks like the odd-number rule is still in full effect. Can't wait for the eleventh album...

Seriously, I don't know what would possess someone to rewrite "The Manpower" for any reason, much less to lead off a long-player. But yeah, it's still better than "Namida".

Post by Genji »

I've been listening to it over and over yesterday. Some songs are good, but I have to say I'm pretty disapponted, even though my expectations were realistic.

IMO, LinLin is the real MVP of this album...

01 - Moonlight night ~Tsukiyo no ban da yo~ - A bad way to start a new album, as already stated. An example of annoying mix of poor ingredients thrown carelessly into the cauldron. TechNOise made of plastic.

What Morning Musume should never be. But sometimes are, unfortunately.

02 - Kimagure Princess - I think there's nothing else left to say about this song. Take it or leave it. If you like it, ok, that's your taste. If you don't, well, that's good taste...

03 - Genki Pikappika! - Except for the 5/6 seconds of fiddle insert and the usual good Eririn performance, nothing special to report. The perfect b-side of a b-side forgotten in a drawer. Routine. But if you content yourself with a dull and anonymus song already heard ten thousand times, please help yourself!

04 - Namidacchi - One of my favorite in this album. Listening to it, I had a fleeting glimpse of past Morning Musume songs. A choral upbeat ballad that reminds ud these girls are still Morning Musume, even if sometimes they seem a bunch of singing puppets.

05 - Onna ga Medatte Naze Ikenai - Ah! The lowest point in Morning Musume history <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/hmph.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':frown:' /> But you already knew, don't you?

06 - Ooki Hitomi - Just another song already heard, patched up with worn-out expedients. They tried to filter Michishige voice through an empty beer can, but no way, it just sounds as horrible as always. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':popper:' />

07 - Ano hi ni modoritai - Not bad. It seems that lyrics mention rain and cold wind blowing, so if you feel kind of blah, blue, lonely and it's raining outside, that's the song for you. Otherwise, forget it and skip forward. There are better things in life than Takahashi's monotone sighs.

08 - Nanchatte Renai - It's their 40th single and after all, it's a good one. I remember I listened to it a couple of times. Then I was too busy with combing my invisible sister's dolls to play it again...

09 - Osaka Oishiinen - Subtitle: Epitome of Tsunku's current lack of inspiration.

10 - Loving you forever - This strongly reminds me ARASHI's style. And that's probably the reason it's the best one of the entire album. Michishige tries to ruin it with her horrible voice, but.. phew..it's only for a couple of lines...

11 - Shouganai Yume Oibito - Probably their best single since Mikan. Only problem, it's been cloned, taken apart and reassembled to create most of following MM songs (with poor results).

12 - Ame no Furanai Hoshi de wa Aisenai Darou (Chinese Ver.) - The third version I hear of this same song, and once again, it sounds great! LinLin reminds us that in Morning Musume there's some singers left... (and you just ain't one of them Michishige, sorry...)

I don't know where you people are getting this idea from. The Manpower never crossed my mind during many replays of Moonlight Night, and even having listened to both of them alternately a few times now they don't strike me as particularly related - maybe except for the slightly similar beat and reduced/minimal instrumentation.

And even if Moonlight Night is supposed to be The Manpower II then I'm OK With This, because there's no harm in fixing a broken song into something good and enjoyable. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/meh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':popper:' />

Listened to the songs so much that now certain dances come to mind when I hear those songs. (And normally, I end up not liking the actual dances. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />)

01. Moonlight night ~Tsukiyo no Ban da yo~: I immediately picture the "Disco Queen" dance with this, what with that very catchy dance feel to it. I hope Momusu makes this live performance really good when dressed up as pink bunnies. (Did you hear? Pink bunnies are the opening costumes for the "Pikappika!" concert.)

03. Genki Pikappika!: I love a good energetic poppy song like this. I picture a hand wave (like from "Last Forever") during the chorus.

04. Namidacchi: I hear that the girls hold each other in a good buddies shoulder line (like "EVERYDAY Zekkouchou!!"), but I like comparing the energy of the chorus and rap to "Shabondama". This could be Morning Musume's theme song if it tried.

06. Ookii Hitomi: The dance has to be sexy. (Well regardless, Eri better be the best dancer there.) Sayumi's verses are my favorite parts, but given the line distribution for a three member song, they really are hiding the fact that Sayu's singing isn't up to par with Eri and Reina.

07. Ano Hi ni Modoritai: This made a good song to listen to in the dark.

09. Osaka Umainen: I like this song for the dialogues and all the food mentions. My favorite part is Mitsui's "Nani sarashite ketsu kan donnen" after the first chorus.

10. Loving you forever: When Koharu sang parts unpleasing to the ears, I tolerated them because she made them sound funny. Sayumi sounds squeaky. And when her part is sung by Eri in the second verse, there is such a contrast. This song is nice and sweet. Has a very spring/school/flowers/garden-like feel to it.

12. Ame no Furanai Hoshi de wa Aisenai Darou? (Chinese Ver.): We don't need another version. (I wonder if this is the only outlet Junjun and Linlin are allowed to showcase their power vocals through just because it's in their native tongue? But Linlin really put soul in her parts.) I believe I preferred Ice Creamusume's version to this.

My copy arrived yesterday. I watched the accompanying DVD first. I'm only just starting to listen to the album now. I think there are only four songs on it that I've heard before. Just as the DVD that came with Platinum 9 had nine different versions of the "Naichau Kamo" PV, each focusing on a different member, the DVD here has eight versions of "Onna ga Medatte Naze Ikenai." (Damn, I miss Koharu. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> ) Which makes no sense to me. There's all kinds of other stuff they can put on a DVD, so why multiple versions of the same damned PV, particularly when few of the girls actually sing any lines or do anything in the video? It's not like a Buono video where each girl does a lot. Or even an older MM song where each of the girls did different things (but acted as a true ensemble so individual videos wouldn't have made sense). For much of the time in each version of this one, the girl sits/stands around looking pretty, with virtually nothing to do. Not a bad thing if you're a big fan of Sayumi, for instance, but I'd sure like to see a greater variety of things on the DVD. After the eight versions, there's a live performance of the song from a concert, followed by brief "Making of" footage from the photo shoot for the album cover.

I mean, look at what they did with the DVD that accompanied Erina Mano's "Friends" CD. A 54-minute "history" with all kinds of great footage of Erina's activities over the past two years. All narrated by Erina herself. (I just devoted two blog entries to this "History.") Would it have hurt UFA to put video footage from last year's Anime Expo trip/concert on this DVD? Just a thought.

P.S. I finished listening to it. To be honest, I have not been excited by a new MM album since "Rainbow 7," when I was still relatively new to MM fandom. "Sexy 8 Beat" was moderately enjoyable, but the last three ("Covers," "Platinum 9" and this one) just don't do it for me. They tend to sound too much alike. The only songs on this one that half-way stand out are "Kimagure Princess," "Shouganai Yume Oibito," and "Ame no Furanai Hoshi de wa Aisenai Darou? (Chinese Ver.)." And I must say that LinLin is emerging as the strongest vocalist in the group outside of Takahashi. Maybe stronger.

The best MM album for me remains #4: Ikimasshoi. The next best are Rainbow 7, followed by nos. 5 & 6. But back then, you had a range of different personalities and easily distinguishable voices in the group. (Nacchi, Kaori, Yossi, Rika, Miki, etc.)

1) Moonlight Night: Well, it starts rather badly. Noisy and overrated. Nothing to add.

3) Genki Pikappika! : Simple and attractive. A piece as one would like to hear more, unpretentious but effective.

4) Namidacchi: A very good song! Playful, Normal variation, changes of subject, as in some of the best songs of MM (The Peace, Souda We're Alive ...). We feel that Tsunku had fun writing it, and Morning Musume to sing.

6) Ooki Hitomi: The very beginning I was excited with a very heavy beat fusion / electro, but unfortunately the rest of the piece never really dare to continue in this style. Some (very good) it passes close but I preferred Tsunku actually take the party to make a piece fusion / electro, at least history of innovation.

7) Ano Hi ni Modoritai: The romantic ballad on the album. Never been a fan of the genre. I keep telling it.

9) Osaka Oishiinen: The song just nawak, the Sukiyaki or Nature is Good. It is not great in itself but I'll be lenient because his presence is refreshing in an album far too homogeneous.

10) Loving You Forever: Roooh still not a ballad. Is that with a title like that should not expect anything. Well it goes altogether better than the previous one anyway. But I should have seen this piece in B side single on the album.

12) Ame no Furana Hoshi wa Aisen Darou (Chinese Ver.) Chinese version (as sung during the tour Nine Smile) of a song already known. I like a lot, not least because it puts the Chinese in the spotlight. JunJun being the best current and Momusu LinLin singing extremely well (I was amazed by his solo during the concert Platinum 9) is well deserved.

LinLin's solo really stands out in "Loving You Forever." And I just realized, on my 3rd listen of the album (and upon re-reading this thread), that Track 12 is a duet by JunJun and LinLin and all in Mandarin. (I'm a little slow these days.) Very nice. Again, LinLin dominates that song. (I'm assuming, since I can't see them, that it's LinLin with the stronger voice of the two.)

And "Kimagure Princess" is getting really catchy. Before getting the album, I had only been exposed to the song via the PV included on the Petit Best 10 DVD. Listening to it is quite a different experience.

After running this album on repeat over the last few days, I am unashamed to like Ookii Hitomi, Namidacchi, and Moonlight Night.

That's a great phrase. "will the world end if I don't download this?" <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />

"WWEIIDDT?" ...already see it on a rubber bracelet.

Hmmm, #9 and 12,103 sales, worst first week sales for an album (discounting Cover You).... indifference or illegal downloading?

The even sadder thing is that with a number that low, they still hit #9. That seems to say a lot about album sales as a whole. Was it on itunes or one of those other half-dozen Japanese digital download networks? I've seen quite a few artists (Giza ones, especially) with virtually no physical sales that hit #1 on the itunes sales charts.

Also, still waiting for my copy that shipped over a week ago. I'm never using that site again...

UFA can't be making much profit from album/single sales for any of the groups, I guess the money comes from concerts/merchandising. Anybody got any approximate figures/guesstimates for concert attendances and ticket prices?

My copy arrived this morning <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nceman.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />, exactly a week thanks to YesAsia.

Considering the venues get smaller and smaller, maybe UFA isn't making any money at all... But back to the album, I think I prefer Platinum 9. The songs were a little bit more exciting. Every song I listen in this album seems to have nothing appealing enough for me to think: oh, now it is Osaka, or yay! It's Ooki Hitomi! They aren't bad, well, except for Oosaka that, so far, irritates me, but I think I prefer one strong song than five so-so
