Does anyone know if the guys from last year's AX who pissed off the UFA guys still in charge this year, or have they been replaced? If they haven't I'd have to guess that, given what we've heard about what happened and the subsequent fallout, that there was indeed major ass-kissing happening from the AX side.
Can someone explain this? I've seen a reference to this a few times just on the bbs already. So an AX leader clashed with UFA? About what? And what happened? etc etc

I also wonder about the ass-kissing. With or without pop stars, AX has been an enormous venue for Japanese pop culture goods and UFA would be stupid to miss out on promoting their singers.

I like Mano, but I'm not making the trip. I'm still reeling from last year's adventure. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hatthe.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

And Mano does seem like an extremely odd choice. I may like what she does, but I don't see it as something that could remotely click with a rabid AX crowd. She does exactly the kind of idol pop that American anime fans ridicule. Buono doing rock songs from their latest album, accompanied by the female rockers from their 2009 concert, would be much more likely to please the crowd.

(I had a dream over the weekend that MM had come to New York and was in a hotel and I was waiting in the lobby to be called up to do an interview and I'm sitting there listening to some obnoxious blogger. Then I'm up in an empty room--no furniture--and Aika is standing alone behind a sheer curtain looking out the window. And Eri was in another part of the room doing the same thing, or in a different room entirely. And that's all I recall. Don't ask me what it means.)
You better fly back to USA so you can hang out with her at a C-ZONE type of distance without security/& or Aika's handler bitch. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /lmfao.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
The sad thing is that I probably would waste my nonexistent money on it, if I didn't have to work on July 2 and 5, meaning a commute across the International Date Line isn't exactly feasible.

I doubt that kind of people goes to such happenings.

90% of the people on anime & manga conventions are probably hardcore weeaboos who'd eat up anything remotely japanese you'd fed them.

I really don't think the crow there is going to be highly critical of anything. They'll just be happy to have some "sugoi cawai" japanese person doing something for them.

(the other 10% are people who have a distinguished taste, like eri or you, may or may not like Erina and have now the chance to see her live without having to fly to Japan)

WHOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAA major dramaz. We always go to AX and I didnt' realize there was this terrible corporate take over when AX was in essence, an overgrown non-profit that developed out of an anime club at UC Berkeley. Now it is run by a douchey capitalist who knows nothing about anime but wants to maximize profits by....not paying for the plane tickets of industry guests! Holy shit.

I don't want to support this monstrosity of a convention, but then I also want to support H!P artists in my own way. And I looooveeee Mano. Em-El got me addicted.

Damn, this is actually confirmed now? Shit. I'd love to go, it just looks like most of the people we hung out with last year aren't going to be going this year, so it might just be me and Ukyo <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

To short of notice. Boo! Not that I care enough about Mano to even attempt it. Now if it were Buono or S/mileage I might attempt a soul sacrifice. But I'm still to far into debt from Morning Musume to even attempt something like another AX trip on such short notice. :<

OOHH smart thinking. They've been her backup team for a few songs now and don't they have some anime tie in?

I guess it's possible, but it's highly doubtful. I mean, S/mileage was standing right there when they announced that Mano was going to go to America. It would be weird if they held back that information with such short notice. (Also, they don't back up the songs anymore in concert, they got some other eggs to replace them. I guess they wouldn't bother bringing them though if they don't bring S/mileage. Too much work to bring backup dancers when it's so much easier to bring one girl + managers).

That might possibly be enough enticement to get me to go.

Don't get me wrong, I like Mano and all, but it's just hard for me to justify spending the money for the trip, especially when there are other (family-related) things happening this summer for which I'd probably need it even more.

I'll be there, without question. I was already looking for a reason to go back, as even those three sets of lower-key idol singers from the Dealers' Room were enough incentive on their own. But I'd said, from the start, that bringing another Hellopro artist to AX would seal the deal. And there we have it. Steve and I are researching travel specifics, and now we have to try and convince folks like Brian and Francis to make a return trip as well.

That is true. Also, in light of AX's cheapassness, they probably wouldn't pay to bring backup girls.

Well it looks like myself and Ukyo are the only people going this year! Maybe I should start an actual thread of who's going like we did last year...

EDIT: http://mm-bbs.org/index.php?showtopic=3364

And man, it would be amazing if they could manage to drag anyone else from the Tsunku family along there like they did last year, like S/mileage or any of the NGP girls, or if Tsunku himself showed up again.

UFA doesn't know beans of marketing.

Fujimoto Miki would be much better option to send to AX instead of Mano.

Oh yes, of course. Good marketing is sending someone whose last music release was 2008. Why would UFA care about marketing her current television career to a bunch of American fans when they have dreams of selling current CDs instead? UFA's goal is not to increase Anime Expo's attendance.

I dunno, I like Fujimoto Miki. But yeah, as for sending her to AX unfortunately that wouldn't go so well and there's really no reason to send her anyways as she's not one of the main H!P soloists anymore, whereas Mano is currently the only soloist of all H!P and needs more of the promotion on the international side.

I like Miki too. That still doesn't mean there's any reason at ALL that they would send her to Anime Expo for a concert or whatever. Especially over Mano Erina. She's a TV personality/model now. What are they going to get out of sending her here to sing songs that she sang 8 years ago?

Not to knock Mano, but if Miki did an event anywhere, including Japan, she would draw more fans than Erina.

This actually makes me less interested in AX. It isn't that I dislike AKB - just that I don't know and am not interested in knowing this group. However, I DO know that the convention will be extra crowded for a guest event that I care little about. I wonder if other people felt this way when it was announced that Morning Musume was the guest LAST year.

Will all 23409283042394 of them be coming?

If AKB fans are ANYTHING like Morning Musume fans you'll need to crash in early if you want to get into any of the events. But I think that also depends on who they have going to the event.

Still not going though. :< Maybe if I win the lottery between now and July. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> But then I'd say screw that and fly to Japan instead. xD
