I'm giving Again a good try. It;s no Hotel Dusk -- I went into it not expecting that. But the story is pretty good so far.

Oh god. I started playing Farmville. I started actually putting my harvests on my calendar:

Whatever, I'm a loser, whatever. I did just find out they can just email you when it's ready, so, that's neat. I dunno. Maybe this'll give me something to do on Facebook.

(lol first Farmville, now this)

I've been working on WTF: Work Time Fun (PSP) and it's a very interesting experience. You play micro-games/jobs for money and you spend that money on gachapon machines that can give you trinkets, tools, or new jobs. All of the games control really simply, but the mechanics of the games, along with the time commitment expected to make a decent amount of money really egg you on. One of the games you start off with is literally just capping pens. One rolls up, you flip it (if need be), cap it, and send it on its way. Capping 200 pens accurately gets you about $5-6 dollars and you can literally cap as long as you'd like. Other games are much shorter, like Cliff Racer. You and another racer speed towards a cliff and whoever stops closer to the cliff (without going over) wins. You only do three rounds, but if you win all three, you get $5. Otherwise, you get .50$/round.

Once you've accrued some money, you can visit the gachapon machines and try for some interesting stuff. The machines are in four denominations: $1, $5, $10, and $50. All of the values levels have trinkets (little collectibles that don't really do much), tools (interesting applications for your PSP like a light that flashes and changes colors, a ramen timer, and a King of the Castle game helper), and new jobs.

Don't get confused, this isn't like Warioware. In WTF, you have clear objectives in the jobs and a variety of challenges and gameplay mechanics. If you're catching 1000 baseballs, there are a number of ways the game tries to trick you up with high balls, fast balls, and even people running on the field! If you're chopping wood, the game will try and stop you by putting animals on the chopping block.

I'd recommend this to...I don't know who. I enjoy it, but I could see where someone could find it boring.

Next review, DJMAX Portable 2!

I'm not sure if this is old news to you guys, but it's definitely something interesting.

I absolutely love FF8 and that was quite interesting to read. The author bring up a lot of valid points that make it both fascinating and hilarious

Playing through FF13 right now. I'm right at the end but I decided to swing back around to level up my characters and weapons...for no reason.

I should just beat the game and be done with it.

Okay, shorter post today.

Dissidia Final Fantasy: Where do I start? Okay, the pros. The game is DAMN pretty. All of the particle effects are nice, the character models and designs are decent, and the levels are shiny. The controls are simple (probably on par with Brawl I believe) and the bravery-and-HP thing is okay. Now the cons. Dissidia places a lot of emphasis on its story mode and, I can't emphasize this enough: I have not cared less about a fighting game's story since Tekken 3. Cosmos and Chaos and villains and the such? Couldn't give half a fuck if I was in the middle of sexy congress. C-C-C-COMPOUND NEGATIVE: where other fighting games probably put less emphasis on story, they make up for it with pick-up-and-play fighting systems. I've played a few hours and, with the two characters I played, there were only two moves each: a move that did damage, a move that drained "bravery," and a move that I mysteriously made happen. OOOOOOVERKILL NEGATIVE: there's a whole system of customizing characters (equipment, accessories, and the such) that requires playing through the story mode. But, in an attempt to make me care, story mode is chess, but Final Fantasy-style (read: horribly mutated and still boring). Just make me battle a bunch of people! I just want to fight! FUCK. I would only recommend this game to uber-diehard fangirl players who want material for their JechtxCecil fanfic. And that is why Dissidia Final Fantasy is the best game ever made.

Final Fantagasm 8: 'nuf said.

Patapon: Eh... cute.

LocoRoco Meh... cute.

DJMAX Portable 2: I genuinely enjoy this game, but it's in that old pre-Distorted hump beatmania had; the easier mode/difficulty is not deep enough. I love 4KEY, but I'm not skilled enough for 5KEY or 6KEY and only about a quarter of 4KEY charts have hard mode charts. Also, mission mode does not have enough 4KEY courses. Still, I've enjoyed a much higher ratio of songs that to probably any IIDX game out there (sans Distorted). Still, the game oozes style, substance, and replayability with TONNNNNES of unlockable gear.

Metal Gear Acid: Weh... cute.

...cute? Metal Gear Ac!d is many things, but... cute? Come to think of it, some kind of SD Metal Gear would probably be kinda cool, if only for all the inside jokes it'd likely have. But wow, cute huh? I am definitely not letting you into MY cardboard box when MGS Peace Walker comes out.

In anticipation of this week's upcoming Super Street Fighter IV release, I got Super Street Fighter II HD Remix & wow is it gay. If it weren't for the option of playing it OG style, I'd be trying to get my $15 back from Capcom for subjecting me to this bullshit comic art style without upping the animation frames to keep it from looking completely retarded. I really dig the fake fireball move, but if that turns out to be in SSFIV like I've heard it rumored, I don't think I'll be booting up this game again.

They wanted to put more frames in, but people bitched at them so they couldn't. For the elitist tournament players, adding new frames would have "broken" the game.

I would have fucked with the game mechanics, though. And the creators were aiming for a tournament-usable re-balance. :T I don't like the art style that much either, but I think it was well done. Well worth the money.

This is mostly how I felt about it too. Originally, the online mode was the highlight. It was really well done, but no one uses it anymore, which kind of negates its greatness.

You can also find the PS1 version of Street Fighter Alpha 2 in the psn store for about $6, which has no online, but is otherwise much better. Not that any of that will matter tomorrow...

...or today! Thought I'd swing by a small independent store I used to pick up imports at, and turns out he got SSFIV in this afternoon, so out came $43.49 of my bank account & I went home with the game a little early. I only played through Arcade mode once on Hardest setting using Ryu, but here's what I've noticed so far:

- The "special" thing players can get from owning SFIV seems to be the use of all the costume packs you bought there, plus 2 more types that apply the "ink" and "sketch" effects used in the trailers for both games. Unfortunately, the ink version doesn't leave splashes as you do moves, but it's something different I guess.

- Ryu's Metsu Shoryuken seems more effective than his previous Ultra, and has good range. I caught Dudley twice when he used that dash-back-dash-in move, looks like it's got nearly sweep distance. Ken's new Ultra is laughably useless though, all you need to do is crouch block when it starts up & he'll pull a series of flaming whirl kicks that all go over your head & leave him wide open at your feet.

- CPU Dan is kind of a pain now! He pulls off anti-air moves regularly & actually comes after you pretty hard. He was the 1st one I fought & I actually lost both rounds, hahaha.

- No opening EXILE theme, or any other artist. It's basically the trailers connected together with a few new scenes added in. The "animated" story intros & endings are a big step down from SFIV's. We're talking digital comics circa early 2000s here.

- The titles & icons don't transfer over from SFIV, so all those have to be earned again. Though you do get special trophies/achievements for practically everything: Clearing Arcade on Medium or higher difficulty, clearing the Car & Barrel bonus stages, plus the same "do 100 Ultras"-type stuff from before.

- Hakan's a lot of fun to play against, but those oiling-up moves leave him way open.

- Seth is still a cheap-ass bitch of a whore. Though he seemed a little easier to beat. Of course, I say this after using 5 or 6 continues on him. Again, unaccustomed to stick + Hardest difficulty. Just sayin'.

So, I look forward to spending many hours with this, though I may ditch the stick at some point. I also tried looking up replay matches (the replay channel's actually divided up into categories like Alpha, Super, Originals, Bosses, etc) and after nearly 5 minutes of sending data I realized there's probably not anything actually UP there yet, seeing how the game comes out tomorrow.

Once a week I work through one chapter of Sakura Wars "So Long my Love". I am playing it with the Japanese voice track simply because it's set in America and I LOVE the engrish. My favorite is the "Mick Jagger" attack. I believe he's saying "Meijaku" but I'll be damned if he's not calling out the Stones in his powerblast. BUFFALO GO GO makes me giggle. "Harlem" sounding like "Harem" is so wrong and so funny. In fact, each and every speech relating to Harlem ends up being so wrong and so funny. The only thing that would make it better is if Rosaritta added random spanish words to her lines instead of english. I'm not sure I would like this game without the Japanese vocal track. SHOWA TIME!!

I'm still crunching through SMT: Strange Journey. DAMN THOSE MEDALS!! DAMN YOU ATLUS FOR PUTTING PERFECTLY SUPERFLOUS CONTENT IN THAT OCD RPGERS LIKE ME MUST COMPLETE!! I still haven't gotten 100% on my compendium either... <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

New batch of games!

Hasune Miku Project DIVA is THE. SHIT. I absolutely love this game to death. Around 40 near-full-length Miku songs with gameplay that mixes DDR and Ouendan? YOU BET. Tons of outfits for Miku that actually change her outfit in the gameplay videos? YEAH. Different in-engine videos playing while you play? AAAH SO WET. You cannot go wrong with this game. You do need a touch of Japanese comprehension, but the UI is pretty straight-forward. There's also a little custom song feature. LOVE.

Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman! is very strange. I don't find it fun and the system is complex. It's for a much more strategic audience I believe. Meh.

Vagrant Story is kind of a classic Parasite Evil/dungeon crawler hybrid from Square. The story is very serious, there are plenty of confusing French names, and every male character has a female name. Also, there's a lot of pixelated TEETEES. Male teetees to be specific. Rather than teach you how to play the game in-game, the game lightly suggests that you take a minute and read the entire gameplay concepts ENCYCLOPEDIA. Even the quick-start entry is huge. Still, the game is fun, but rather basic. I don't know, maybe I'm not good enough...

Who the hell ported Harvest Moon: Hero of Leaf Village? At least in my rip, the game is translated into decent English, but the actual controls of the game are still in their Japanese settings (OK is circle, back is X) and the info-graphics don't reflect that. I don't really like the gameplay changes either. The seeds you buy are only planted to a single square, rather than the nine surrounding you. You also have to physically take crops to specific shops to receive the optimal return on crops. Seems like a filler concept I guess. You can find better and you can find worse Harvest Moons than this.

What the fuck, it's been out 5 days & nobody here's talking about SSFIV? You faggots better be playing so much that you don't have time to post about it. Even the Pedo-gogo bbs has more discussion going on. DON'T MAKE ME BUMP THE OLD SFIV THREAD.

I picked up one of the Madcatz Fightpads (Juri) since I'd heard they'd fixed the USB issues that plagued last year's PS3 pads & so far it's working very nicely! I'm still apprehensive about a controller that requires BATTERIES (wtf) but performance-wise, it's everything I could ask for in a 6-button controller. I'll still use the stick periodically, since I need to train myself to do the double-quarter-circle-forward motions I've always had trouble with (never had any problems doing QCF, QCB, or even DQCB with a stick, but for some reason, that DQCF doesn't always come out right) but this pad lets me do almost everything I intend to, with very little effort and/or error. Now I need to find a way to mod it to use a USB cable.

Game-wise, I've been playing around with Juri, Hakan, Dee Jay & Dudley. I'm also playing through a lot of the Trials, which are better that SFIV's in the sense that you can attempt any of the ones you want in any order. If you're having trouble with any particular trial, you don't have to clear it in order to move on to the next one. But one unfortunate change is that you no longer can have the direction+button inputs displayed onscreen while you attempt the move/combo. You can still access that the same way as before by pressing Select, but it pauses the game now while it's displayed. Only the name of the move seems to be visible while you're trying to perform it.

Still haven't fought anyone online yet, but I'm sure that'll change today when I get the inevitable LEMME BEAT YOU UP WITH MY SAKURA, FOOL message from Kenji. I just wanna have one of the new characters ready so I don't have to be yet another Ryu online.

It's because no one's playing the faggy PS3 version! I've been trying to get all the trials done and figure out which characters I'm going to stick with. T. Hawk and Cammy seem to be giving me the best results.

I finished it today! It was excellent! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Spoiler-free post:

Not sure about the total play time, but 10-15 hours seems a good estimate. While the story is complete, it does feel short. Like reading a short story vs a novel. I'm used to games at least 3x longer, but I guess that's the times...

About the story/novel comparison, you can definitely feel it has its origins in a novel and follows it very closely - to the point that I started to think of it as a visual novel in my head. Of course with much more interactivity than your typical VN, but with complete linearity and very few places where you can stray off of the pre-defined path (and maybe 1 or 2 where you can take alternative routes). That's not a downside by any means, just the kind of a game it is.

Is it scary? Parts of it are, yes. There are parts where you just don't want to go around that corner. And when you do, you just want to run through the area as quick as possible, spraying bullets everywhere. But to classify it as horror I think is misleading and setting wrong expectations. It's not The Suffering or any of those strict horror games where fear and suspense are the point in and out of themselves. In Metro 2033 they are just one of the many aspects of the story that you're thrown into. With that said, even though I wasn't particularly setting myself up in a horror mood (lights out, headphones, etc.), then even in a brightly lit room, after telling myself enough for the day and quitting the game, sometimes I really really didn't want to look away from the monitor, least say stand up...

The game does have a few flaws that stop it from getting a straight 10/10, but they are very minor and not worth mentioning as they don't really take away from the whole experience.

So if you're thinking what to play next, go play Metro 2033. And if you feel and understand this very special kind of poetry and magical realism of Russian literature, go play it even more, because the whole game is full with and oozing with that mood. It's nowhere near a mindless FPS shootan game you might think it is on the first glance, this is just a device and convention used to tell a story which is the first and foremost thing.

Oh I should also probably mention that it's absolutely stunning visually. It takes a solid gaming rig to run it with full details, but if I ever had doubts about buying mine a few months ago, then now I know it was worth it if only to enjoy the beauty of this game.

I rambled, but it was just so good. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Just finished Gay Tony yesterday night and it was soooo good.

I loved every single character and some of the missions were so ridiculously over-the-top. I had so much fun while playing that game and it reminded me why Vice City still is my favourite GTA. They also changed a few things about the city and used places that were pretty much unused in the main game (GTA 4), so the city didn't feel that old.

Also, just played half an hour of Grid Wars 2, it's similar to Geometry Wars and it's even free ! So try it out.

Bought Me & My Katamari yesterday, beat is yesterday, and will be returning it tomorrow. It was fun to play some katamari, but there are only, like 3 different variations of all of the size levels, each one is VERY similar, and you end up playing a number of them in the same game. It is too repetitive to enjoy for more than a few days, let alone timelessly. Plus, the controls (using the d-pads (that analog nub is for CHUMPS)) keep leaving damn big fingerprint trails all over my PSP. You were fun, you were cheap, but in the end, you are short-term. It's a shame really, because it's got most of the music from the first two games AND new music AND an awesome ending sidescrolling 8-bit katamari anyone? even if the story is nonexistant.

(yes, the rare triple post~~~)

Sid Meier's Pirates! for PSP is a very sneakily good game. It's a shame there isn't any sort of in-game guide (though you can pull up the controls pretty much anywhere). You're really kind of thrown into the game with a very passive underlying plot (to find your family and kill the evilest pirate guy). There are a lot of questionable choices made for the game. For one, the wind is ALWAYS going west. Unfortunately, you may need to go EAST at some point. Also, early into my play through, I easily defeated the 2nd ranked dastardly pirate, took his GIGANT 32-cannon ship and I really haven't had much of a problem beating any other enemies thus far. Still, I've easily lost a bunch of time in this game. I may just look into the PC version.

The PSP mini games Monopoly and Brainpipe are terrible. Avoid them.

Burnout Legends is a good racing game, but crash mode in Burnout games has always rubbed me sour. Also, another clunky UI.
