Goto Maki Best of "2001 - 2007"

So apparently Maki is going to release a best of on 8/25 that is basically sums up her entire H!P solo career. I suppose the idea is that anyone who has just now become a fan of her can get the best of (almost) everything she was involved in while she was at H!P all in one album. Kind of cool, but I don't understand how it works from a copyright standpoint. Is UFA going to make all the money off of this? Would avex get anything at all? Most of the time when artists switch record labels (at least in Japan) they act as if everything they released previously never existed.

The solo versions of I Wish and Bokura ga Ikiru My Asia seem new to me...unless I missed those releases? Bokura ga Ikiru seems like something they might have been planning to throw on her last album with H!P, but it just didn't fit or something.

EDIT: Clarification from NESHCOM - this is a Piccolo Town release, so avex likely has nothing to do with it.

From the copyright standpoint, it looks like Piccolo Town is releasing this (though most likely with her approval?), so I would guess avex has no say in this. Since this is being released through UFA/zetima's hands, I would guess that they own her music (and even materials, e.g these "rare tracks") and she may not legally be able to sing those songs live as part of her previous contract without a performance/song writers fee.

It's not so strange anymore. When Aya Kamiki changed labels, Giza released a best of album for her the same day as her first Avex album. I guess it has more to do with if they left on good terms.

@Al - Ahh that makes sense, I was thinking this was something avex itself was releasing. @Pumo, thanks for clearing that up - I was wondering what the PK- code was.

Avex should suck it up and pay a fee to let her do some of her old songs. I'm assuming that a big part of the reason that she left was because she wanted to go in a whole new direction, but they could do a remix of a song or two to make the old fans happy. At least she has an actual album of new material now that she could perform, but it's still not much for a whole tour.

@TnB: Suzuki Ami has done at least one live and televised Yasutaka Nakata remix/re-arrangement of her hit BE TOGETHER (from when she was on Sony) a few years ago (while on avex). It's not unusual for Avex transfers to use their old songs. It's just a matter of whether it's worth it to Avex to buy the rights or not.

There could not be a less wasteful investment than to get a re-arrangement for a live-only, decade old hit song for Suzuki Ami to be performed to a shopping mall of 20 middle-aged women. I'm sure we'll see SOME BOYS! TOUCH (Fantastic Plastic Machine Remix) performed on Maki's "FIRST Guy-Gyration Stripy Show 2012-2013" tour.

I would doubt that they even asked her. Also performance rights fees are so standardized and easy that a large company like Avex probably just has a simple overarching licensing contract with JASRAC. You don't mess with JASRAC.

I was also confused by this... I mean, if this was really Avex, they wouldn't limit until 2007 only. I don't even know how much of H!P Maki they wan to be remembered. At the same time, Maki is finally making her comeback and right at that time a Best comes out? So, is UFA milking easy money before it is too late? Does Avex want to make peace? As I said, I'm confused.

As Pumo notes above, it's being released by Piccolo Town - so it's a UFA release, not an avex release.

Most of Disc 2 is actually already available on her previous albums (Suki Sugite and the two Korean versions were on Premium Best, Watarasebashi (and Renai Sentai which they haven't included) was on her 3rd, Shiawase desu ka on her 2nd, Akai Nikiccho her 1st, and then the live tracks are just from concerts). But it is cool of them to collect that stuff in one place. I was thinking the same thing about a Goto Love Machine...I guess it's just one of those songs that doesn't lend itself well to being a solo.

Wow, the second disc is win just because of Suki Sugite Baka Mitai. There's a few others that might be interesting, but even most of the other solo stuff on there, she has done live at some point by herself.
