The New All Purpose SNSD Thread

Re: The New All Purpose SNSD Thread
I dunno if I've just been into SNSD too long, but I can pick 'em apart easily. Yoona has the bags under her eyes that Koreans love, Yuri just has that Yuri-ish look to 'er. (Sorry I know that's not helpful... Long dark hair, sorta dark skin... Laugh lines...)
There isn't really any girl I confuse with another, although I sometimes forget HyoYeon's name <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Re: The New All Purpose SNSD Thread
^ I just about thought that Yuri and Yoona were the same person when I first saw SNSD. I got them mixed up 9 out of 10 times before I got to know the group a little better. They still look pretty similar to me:
It isn't my favourite SNSD song, but I like the Japanese Genie. I still think that the best bit about this whole SNSD in Japan/Shoujo Jidai thing so far has been the teaser that seems to be advertising an as yet unheard song called "Jenny".
Yuri and Yoona look nothing alike ! lol
Yuri and Seohyun however in some of the old videos...
Those three definitely look the most alike out of the group. It's like a continuum: Yoona->Yuri->Seohyun. However, I never had a problem identifying Seohyun because when they first debuted, she had ridiculous bags under her eyes and had a bit of that lingering adolescent awkwardness to her looks. She's really gotten a lot prettier as she's gotten older.
As as an aside, I've never quite gotten the whole Yoona love that she gets from Korea. She's one of the most average looking girls in the group to me. Nothing about her features particularly stands out, but then I've noticed that about some other girls that get praised as being beautiful in Korea but make me go "...I don't see it." (Krystal from f(x) being another example from me off the top of my head). Not saying she's not pretty, but I guess I just prefer a different type of look.

Same here, I really don't get the Yoona love. I love her because she's funny as hell and a nice person, but as far as looks go she'd be very low on my list of "SNSD members I'd want to sleep with" <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
And yeah like you said, a lot of Korean artists that are "known" for being beautiful don't do it for me. The girls anyway, they seem to have it down pretty good when it comes to guys.

Yup, she looks better now. And yes, her eye bags definitely looked weird. haha
I'm happy they are not that extreme anymore.
Hyoyeon is the only one that looks shitty in SNSD. haha
Sooyoung also got better looking. She looked like some Thai hooker in the beginning.
I think Yoona looks good. She has a bit of a girl-next-door look.

Re: The New All Purpose SNSD Thread
I bought the Run Devil Run app from iTunes and it has a handy little photo section that helps me remember who is who. \<img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ohyeah.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':shlick:' />
Still can't tell in older stuff, but newer stuff. I'm on top of it! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':shlick:' />
If anyone has an ipod with app capability, I high recommend the it, it's only 7.99, you'd pay more for the album and it has less cool features! Not only do you get the full album, which also comes with the lyrics in Korean that move along with the music, plus music videos for Run Devil Run, Run Devil Run Story Ver., Oh!, Gee, Genie, and a Teaser for the album, a calender with clock that shows pictures of the girls and another section with the photos by themselves where you can click on them to tell you who each girl is as well as when they were born, height and specialties.
I also got the Super Junior and f(x) one, it was cooler AND cheaper then buying the albums. AND a bonus for helping me figure out who was who. They also have free versions, but they lack all that special features. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':shlick:' />
Edit: Breaking news, My neice likes Kpop! I died when I found out. Gahahah! Just spent an hour talking to her about it. I'll have to thank Kesha and Youtube for making this possible. Her favorite is SNSD.
I also got her to watch some 2ne1. It's nice to finally have something in common again. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/wub.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I didn't really have much of an issue determining who was who even when I first got into them, but maybe that's because it was during Gee and they weren't so young, I know during the original New World promotions some of them looked a like, Yuri and Yoona especially but during GEe I think they all had their own identity/look so that they didn't look all that alike. I kinda agree that sooyoung looked likea thai hooker a bit but I really do think Yoona is pretty. If you watch her eniiss free or w/e those commercials were called when she was in the corn field you can tell she's gorgeous.

It is a dangerous thing to comment on this, because I too might still be mixing the girls up....but,
I think its because Yoona looks like a good little girl - a very classic, fresh kind of pretty. She isn't glamorous or have particularly distinctive features, but she is very...balanced looking.

Well you guys are ignoring (or more probably just don't really know) the fact that she was the first member anyone really knew because of starring in dramas. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Older people saw her playing Saebyuk on You Are My Destiny ( http://sophisticatedsubber.wordpress.com/tag/yoona/ ) and thought oh what an adorable girl because of the whole Aegyo fat thing I may have mentioned before. She had lots of that under her eyes which makes her adorable especially to grandmas haha.
She also gets a lot of love because she's rather down to earth and accessible because of the way she laughs and talks on shows. Her Ago Yoona or w/e (alligator mouth) image made people laugh with her and was an endearing thing to the masses.

So on a whim while at the grocery today (4am shopping ftw!) I decided to see wtf Seohyun loves so much about sweet potatoes and buy one to just bake when I got home and eat. The only time I've tried a sweet potato was in the marshmallowy shittyness that was my mom's sweet potato casserole (I think that's what it's called) so I was pleasantly surprised that they are actually quite good to just bake and eat with skin and everything! (although I washed it for about five minutes cause I don't trust anything that's been in direct contact with dirt for most of its existence <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/sick.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' /> . But yeah, score one for Seohyun and her gd sweet potato craze.

Sweet potatoes seem to be a big weight control thing in Korea. Aren't theirs somewhat different? I don't know. But yes, they are delicious on their own.
Re: SNSD's diet, I recently came across the story where their trainer essentially admitted they starve themselves and eat only vegetables. They later backtracked on this, but it really makes you wonder. I'm sure this is a general music/entertainment industry thing, not unique to SM entertainment, by the way. The amount of insane Korean celebrity diet stories is kind of overwhelming.

I'd like to read that/those articles.
It's also pretty prevalent in American celebs too. Yay for five seven girls barely clocking in at 100lbs!

Re: The New All Purpose SNSD Thread
That "a woman's average diet consists of 2000 kcal" is also crap. You have to be quite a "big" woman to have more than 2000kcal basal metabolic rate
I eat between 2200~2400kcal, but I'm also 191cm. lol
Let's put these numbers into perspective:
A woman at the age of 20 with 160cm/50kg has a BMR of around 1145. So, 1200~1500 sounds like an ok and healthy amount of kcal.
However, this does not include training, dance lessons, concerts etc. that the SNSD girls do. One hour of cycling with quite some effort burns around 600kcal. I'm not sure how long they train, dance and sing around all day, but combining all that you probably have the metabolism of an athlete (at times).
If we look at the numbers of some of the SNSD girls, we see that they actually are very underweight.
Taeyeon is 161cm/44cm and her resulting BMI is 16.8. (normal is considered 18.5~25, 16.5-18.5 underweight and <16.5 very underweight)
As expected, SooYoung is the one with the lowest BMI, 16.6 (at 170cm/48kg).
Are they underweight ? Yes, since the "but they're asian" excuse does not work with the BMI. The difference from asian to caucasian is the lower max. for normal BMI. (Link to international BMI differences)
Do they no eat enough ? Probably, judging by what their trainer said. 1500 is not enough for somebody who has a BMR or 1000~1200 and has a job that will make you sweat a lot.

Bingo. I'm going to nerd out about this a little bit, so bear with me.
Basal metabolic rates are fine and all, but there's about 100 different formulas that are considered acceptable and the range is enormous.
If a small woman (let's say 5'3"-5'6") exercised a minimum of 1 hour per day and had a relatively active lifestyle otherwise (or is on her feet a good portion of her work time for example), 2,000 calories per day would be perfectly acceptable for her to maintain a healthy weight. That 2,000 calorie suggestion--at least in America--is also based on the "standard woman" height/weight combo... which is usually like a 5'4" woman at 145 lbs. in most examples, with a certain level of activity assumed.
I think the issue is that such caloric intake suggestions assume a certain level of daily activity for EVERYONE. A lot of people are sedentary now, though... office jobs, no exercise, etc. If a sedentary, relatively short woman consumes more than 1,400 calories per day she will put on the chub.
But yes, overall I agree with Ap. They need to be eating more than 2000 calories a day for the kind of work they do.
It has always kind of worried me that Asian stars in general are so physically active and so thin without basically any visible muscle definition... That makes me think they just do lots of cardio and don't eat a whole lot, rather than strength training and a nutritious diet.

Sweet potatoes confuse the hell out of me. I know I love Japanese/asian sweet potatoes, which are white on the instead with a dark magenta skin on the outside. American sweet potatoes don't know if they want to be called yams or sweet potatoes. Just another something Americans can't agree on. The Orange potatoes are good baked until super soft and cracked open and garnished with butter and cinnamon. Mmm. But I like the Japanese/asian sweet potatoes just naturally by themselves but they are SO hard to find. Though I've yet to try and eat the skin, they be crazy hard to clean. D:
From the YG website, they give you a little map of their company and they have a gym on site, which makes me think someone like SM is bound to be the same. I'm sure the girls have a daily routine they stick to. It seems like a super hard life to lead which gives me more reason to respect what they do and feel sorry for them if they screw up on live television or at a concert.

Re: The New All Purpose SNSD Thread
Sweet Potatoes and SNSD are SO related. As far as the diet thing goes, I would think that it's unwise even in the short run to allow them to go through too harsh a diet. 2000kcal seems like it would be enough for what they do. I don't quite think it's athlete levels of calorie-burning--even a concert only lasts an hour or so, and it's not like they run around all the time. Then there's TV appearances which is a lot of sitting around, plus there's periods where they're not promoting stuff too. But yeah, the 1200~1500 thing is... kinda scary. SM does have a bit of a reputation regarding how badly they treat their "staff" though, as evidenced by the recent lawsuit (and lots of stories).
I'm surprised they let Kara starve themselves... But I'll refrain from saying more about Kara in a SNSD thread.
Anyway, back to gushing for me! Awesome radio clip of Sunny & Taeyeon. I'd seen this before without the subtitles, just for the acapella singing, but it does add something if you know what they're saying. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> At the time I was really impressed by how many songs they know without prompting, although I guess most of the songs are very popular. Also check them out dancing along to Andy's awesome LOVE SONG, and (seemingly) talking like friends when the mics are off. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':sideways:' />

Umm yeah gonna drag this off again for a bit, but there is no way SNSD eats 800 calories a day. Those bitches would be passing out left and right if they survived on 800 calories of just fruits and vegetables while doing all the dancing they do and being under hot, bright lights. Even hardened Korean idols aren't superhuman.
On-topic. I still can't really bring myself to like them beyond my "I never want to be associated with K-Pop fans ever" bias. :< SooYoung and Sunny are adorable but I'm just not getting sucked in.

It takes a while to get used to, but I remember all their names now :3 My favorite is Seohyun. Though when I first saw them sing I thought, these girls are like a Korean Morning Musume except they all look the same <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Confirmed News :: Gee is the next Shoujo Jidai Single to be released on October 20th and it's just Gee, Korean Gee and Instrumental Gee.. Gee!? What a shocker. Oooo I made a bad pun!
No new songs, this is getting old and it's only the second Japanese single. As much as I LOVE Gee and their crab dance, which btw I'm sure the Japanese will go about as crazy over as they did for Kara's butt dance.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is dying for new material instead of re-releases.
Also they did well in their Japanese debut, 45K in the first week for what is probably close to a 50 million yen in sales.
Not a bad first go at all.

Re: The New All Purpose SNSD Thread
I actually don't mind a re-release of Gee because I want to hear how it sounds like in Japanese and plus we get another MV. I just hope they don't make their third single a re-release. I wouldn't mind some new material too.
Re: The New All Purpose SNSD Thread
Not so bad, but still quite horrible radio rip phone grab of Shoujo Jidai's Gee. Listen at your own risk.

I'd brace for "Oh!" and maybe "Run Devil Run" being the next singles, but to be honest they're quickly running out of single material that's in their "modern" style. I don't know how long they plan to be in Japan though.
New link for Gee Japanese, dunno how long this one will last. Quality is kinda okay though, good enough to listen to.

"Gee" was not one of my favourite songs. It's my least favourite actually.
Girls, if you're gonna keep using your old songs and just translating them, please do "Run Devil Run." Otherwise, release something new. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nfused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
