Watching that I saw a little of Maki in Riho. Also, I'm starting to like Erina.

I want better. Especially in terms of personality. We already have good singers and dancers in the group and they're boring and obnoxious as hell.
Hear, hear! I want Riho to want to be the next Maki fucking Goto, and nothing less.

Only time will tell if she has that same star quality, but she certainly has the tools.

Honestly, though, what this group needs is another Yuko Nakazawa.
Hell yes, to both your post and the one you were quoting. I think this girl has the potential to be the next Goto Maki, after all these years. Whether she lives this out remains to be seen. It's going to rely not only on her natural talent and personal choices, but also heavily on the way her producers promote her (along with the material they provide.) Then again, no matter how much she shines, the group itself is going to have trouble reclaiming any sort of mainstream success. The producers seem perfectly content in this, anyhow, and are rather catering to the core audience they know will not stray.

I keep hoping for Mitsui to take that position. She has the kansai-ben and the spirit of an old lady. All we need is some young kouhai calling her an obasan.
I haven't kept up with their shows in any form for a few years, so I'm not sure if Aika has developed a similar personality to Yuko. But at the very least, their voices are like polar opposites. I can't imagine her taking Yuko's role in terms of anything musical. I always thought Aika's voice blended well with Kamei, as did the producers obviously (with how much they paired them.) I'd love her to fill that role, assuming her vocals could improve enough.

Haha, I think Nakazawa is awesome and Mitsui will most likely never be that awesome. I just thought it would be funny if people called her an obasan. And that she would make herself useful leading/teaching the kouhai.

I think Mitsui is too nice for that role, Yuko had the image of a Yankee who got irritated at everything and always had to be center.

After Yuko left, Miki took over her role, of the "mean" type, then Reina did, but lost it...

Firstly there will only ever be one Yuko, anybody else can only be a pale imitation.

I always thought everybody took the hard case persona as an act, watch her at Graduation concerts, either MM or OG, and she's usually two songs ahead of anybody else in starting to tear up and along with Takahashi and Yaguchi seems to go through the most trauma at saying goodbye to somebody.

One of the most memorable moments of the Paris concert was when Yuko started tearing up during her talk segment when they played Furusato on the screen and all the audience sung along. I couldn't understand all of the talk, but I think she was so shocked and touched that people still remembered and cared about the past MM.

I'm usually rather sceptical when watching what I call "snot segments" of the graduation concerts (that didn't apply to the EriJunLin one ) but I saw this one in real and it couldn't have been faked.

I don't think it was all an act. I think she took her role as leader more seriously than any other Musume who has held the position, and that she was an iron-hand-in-a-velvet-glove type of leader. And she was a natural leader. When I say that MM needs another Yuko, I mean someone who is immediately recognized as a superior deserving of respect from those around her, as opposed to someone the younger girls grudgingly afford deference based on seniority. I think Kei Yasuda was a similar type even though she never officially held the role of group leader. Since all the first two gen members graduated, every girl who has led the group has exuded more of an "equal, but in charge" sort of vibe to me. Hitomi always seemed like too much of a rebel to lead, and Takahashi too aloof. Miki Fujimoto was probably the closest to having natural leadership qualities, but they gave the role to Takahashi based on seniority. I don't know if it's possible for any girl to grow into that kind of leader when they join at 12 or 13 and get so used to being everyone's equal for so long, which is why I'd love to see a really strong 17+ girl join at some point. It'll never happen, but it sure would benefit the group, I think.

Aika is just a useless waste of space as far as I'm concerned.

In a year or so we'll get Sayu as leader and Aika as sub-leader and it will be fucking AWESOME.

The current Ai-Risa team actually isn't that bad as they are literally the mother and father of the group. Ai's the one that knows everything about the members and looks after their mental and physical well-being while Risa's the hardass that keeps them in line. Except for Eri.

I get the impression that Takahashi is extremely serious about the leader position and really cares about maintaining the integrity of MM, but it's true that her personality just doesn't seem to command much respect.

Sayu just said on her blog while she was talking about the new girls that she was surprised that Erina actually spoke to her, because she never would have done that when she first joined. Granted, everything we know about the 9th gen comes from approximately a collective 35 minutes of Bijo Gaku episodes, but I did notice that despite being nervous they seemed surprisingly ready to muscle their way in there, whereas when 5th and 6th gen joined they were like little cowering mice completely overpowered by the existing personalities. Reading this conversation now though, obviously it's that the existing personalities aren't quite what they used to be. Maybe there WILL be one in this new batch...

Yeah I agree! Because Ai really loves MM, and that's part of why all the other members look up to her as their leader~ And there's always Gaki to be strict for her when she has trouble talking!

I noticed a really distinct shift happening around 4th generation with this. I feel like it isn't about personalities though.

When 2nd gen joined, it was outright hostile behind the scenes because there was zero precedent of adding new girls. I think it took a long time for the original 5 members to adjust to this idea of an ever-changing Morning Musume. Rika told this funny story about how Kei called her into her dressing room soon after she joined and was all "So whats up" (最近どう?) in this confusingly hostile but friendly way. However, Takahashi (or someone?) said something like "well new auditions are part of morning musume but the announcement surprised us." They seem to have gotten used to a more supportive sempai-kouhai group dynamic instead of a "who the fuck are these kids stealing my spotlight" one.

5th gen is the one completely marking the shift - they still were part of a group with OG members but they came in understanding they were all basically friends (lots of girls the same age). Thats why I think a group led by the 5th gen is really different. Plus, all of the scary older members are gone now.

This is pretty much how I see it, too. Remember how they greeted the 4th gen, the looks of abject fear in the eyes of the n00bs? Even tough-bitch Hitomi looked like she was pissing her pants as the older members looked them over with almost mocking disdain. They were going to let the new kids know there place right from the get go, and be nice later. I don't think this new group could pull that off, though, as none of them, IMO, exude the sort of aura that just commands respect. I think some of the later girls -- and Reina, in particular -- would have benefited from some Yuko or Kei style tough love.

I can at least give her credit for having a place in the group, as idols rely more on image and stage persona than on singing. But to put Sayumi in as leader, someone who is the antithesis of singing itself, would be too much an insult. And yes, I know that many of the past group leaders have not been the lead vocalists. The leadership position relies almost solely on seniority. Still, if they had to promote someone from 6th gen to leader, I'd rather it be Reina. As they joined at the same time, this could overpower the specific age issue.

Kanon clearly just needs to work on her over reactions (If her singing Aitai Lonely Christmas is anything to go by). Just make sure Risa isn't the one to teach her. I still think she'll turn out fine, she's this groups Konno.
