Basically, my point was no other group can really copy "S/mileage sound" because S/mileage songs are a big combination of past styles in H!P.
Yeah, I actually heard a lot of early Ayaya songs in this. Like a ska version of Ne~e. Could just be the Tsunkuisms.
If you think this is the worst Morning Musume single ever, that all the new members suck, and that there isn't anyone good/interesting/fun/whatever left in the group - then you're right! Because all of those things are your opinions and you will never be 'wrong' about your taste in music or idols. It would be absurd for anyone to tell you otherwise. The fact that I kind of enjoy this song and love every single 9th gen member isn't going to make you like those things any better, after all.

At the same time, having read posts from other members that were pretty much verbatim to this one in every MM thread in the last several years, I suggest you do yourself a favor - if the group no longer interests you, stop following them! I have never understood why people seem to torture themselves by watching all the latest video clips and listening to the new songs of a group they apparently no longer enjoy. It seems very frustrating and stressful.
If I didn't already both adore and respect the hell out of you, which I did, this post alone could have managed to make me fall in love with you.
Morning Musume's discography & H!P have had songs like this, way before S/mileage existed. That's the thing about Morning Musume, they never have one signature sound. It's whatever Tsunku is feeling at the moment, sometimes this is a good thing, sometime not. They might have trends, but those typically haven't extended past 6 singles. The 45 singles have a huge range, and it extends even more once you include coupled with & album tracks. Then once in a while, Tsunku surprises us again something new.

What makes it Morning Musume, not S/mileage or any other group is the variety of vocals and age range, (and the unending battle to be heard over whatever trinity of front girls) Morning Musume like a patchwork quilt. Some fabric is pretty, some pieces are much older, some don't belong, some are worn and are falling apart, things happen and good pieces are lost, then random new patches get added.
Same goes for you, my sexy Poochy Man. You guys seem to have the fort well-bolstered. I forget sometimes, too, that a good number of our regulars here are the outspoken, objective type who will defend things to the death. It makes me feel unnecessary, in both a good and bad way.

Wow. So many different opinions. Now let me throw my two cents in

I'd say people are reacting more to the change in vocals rather than the song itself; it's a dramatic shift, with most of the power vocals leaving (Eri, LinLin, Junjun, Takahashi's upcoming graduation) and the change in average age (I think it moved from 20 to 16ish). Of course mm is going to sound completely different.

The song itself isn't horrible--I'd agree with Nesh. Generic ska, which makes sense to me. If Tsunku went all out on the instrumental (horns, more drums and the like), I doubt we'd manage to hear the girls at all.

Everything aside, I'm actually glad that mm is reverting back to a happier, more upbeat image. Serious group is serious, but the image change is refreshing after two/three years of the same lineup.

Considering the group hasn't changed much in the past couple of years, I'm surprised more people aren't going into toxic shock with the total change of Musume character. But that's to be expected.

Anyway, Morning Musume is going to be on Melodix on 3/26. I hope they plan on more then that for their big 9th gen debut because they really need it. Really...
I don't hate it, (if I've given that impression my bad) it just doesn't make me excited or even interested to hear any more.

Every single that has come out since I started following MM has at least registered with me from songs I really liked from the start like Kanashimi Twilight, Resonant Blue and Shouganai Yume Oibito to ones that grew on me, Onna ni Sachi Are and Nanchatte Renai, to ones I haven't really liked that much such as Onna to Otoko no Lullaby Game but they had an impact on me but this one does absolutely nothing to me. Maybe it will be a grower but I really don't think so.

After watching the recording on Bijo Gaku I fell in love. Yes, it is completely different than what we have had for the past 3 years, but with a bunch of young teens added in that is what Musume needs. Reminds me of Koko ni Iruzee with that fun wild and crazy feel to it. It's nice to hear something not just featuring one main member singing a depressing love song. I love all those songs too but happy and fun is also part of being an idol.

I can't wait to see it performed live. Unfortunately I am not going to the concert until they actually get to Tokyo in May but hopefully the release event will be a good one.

None of the girls are that bad vocally, they actually sound like normal young teens less than two months into vocal training, in my opinion. I mean seriously, even Ai wasn't that good when she first auditioned, no one is without training and being used to singing into a mic. Half of Kanon's problem at Fanclub Event was she was eating the mic.

Ai WAS that good when she first auditioned. Obviously she is a great deal better now, but she already had such a good voice. I've seen a clip of her when she was like 12 singing for some tv show and she even sounded pretty good then.

Mizuki sounds really good, but the others need serious practice, that's to be expected though, and no reason to hate them (I'm not saying you said that alita, just that a lot of other people have been).

Airi's audition however, takes the cake for greatness.

I second this.

Ai was 100x better than Kanon and Erina at their age.

I love it!!! It really does sound like Koko ni Iruzee! This is more or less my favorite kind of mm music and it isn't a stretch to say I'm a big fan of S/mileage haha.

STUFF
I've been following MM more or less since 2nd generation and I've seen every single incarnation of their look, sound, member mix, graduation and audition, and I've bitched and complained about the death of the group 500 million times. I'm over it now. It is fine for people to dislike songs, dislike girls, whatever. I hate it when people try to drag in faulty logic as though there is some factual "proof" that the death bells should start ringing. I have 3 points:

1. Though tastes in pop music are completely subjective, the biggest whining here is that this song isn't "original." WTF are you expecting? Some world changing epic sound that no one has ever heard before and has no relation to other Tsunku material? What??? Its a random complaint just to complain. Every single song they've had has been a rehash of every single type of sound you've heard before. That's why its POP MUSIC. And if you think the previous songs were intensely original, then you're simply wrong.

2. Something new (girls) is now a bad thing? Yeah, we've never seen this kind of mix before but it doesn't really matter until we see it play out. There is no inherent rule that says an age gap equals death. There is no clear proof that age actually equals personality either.

3. Selective memory. The good has always compensated for the bad? First of all, you realize these recordings are edited as much as possible so that everyone ends up singing decently and I'm sure you're not regularly going to concerts where live singing matters. Also, Koharu fucking Kusumi had a solo career and Rika was a center girl for a long time, so sometimes the universe of idols makes no sense. There are moments when all the girls sound good and moments when all of them sound bad -- it is the skill of the producer/etc to give the girls the lines that bring out their voices best. The group has survived more than 10 years now - have a little more faith.

And "Personality" is highly subjective because everyone knows I think Konno should disappear forever and that she brought nothing to the group other than her boobs and wota pity. What personality did she have? Simpering good girl? Why, then you should love Erina!

This is a good point - and not specifically in response to Turtle, just in general to the "the old days/golden era were better" sentiment that often pops up here. Style has a lot to do with how good any particular member sounds. MM's style has made a few significant shifts in their history. Very early on, there was a lot more focus on sounding "pretty" and "mature" - harmonies, vocalizations, R&B, etc. Then for a number of years they moved towards a more definitively "idol pop" sound where cuteness and excitement was emphasized a lot more. In more recent years, they've tried to go for a mature sound again, relying heavily on people like Takahashi and Fujimoto and bringing in more belting, vocalizing, and harmonies. I imagine the change back to cutesy idol pop might be for some what Love Machine was to fans of Memory Seishun no Hikari.

The size of the group has something to do with it as well. It's a lot easier to notice and complain about Sayu and Aika's vocals when there aren't fifteen girls to spread lines across. I'm hoping this change back to happy music (if it sticks) will help them (and some of the new girls as they start out) blend a little better than they would in say...Nanchatte Renai.

Also, Ukyo! Never stop coming by to write essays. The BBS just wouldn't be the same!

We love you too, Ukyo! right back at donut.

At least this single came almost a decade after Koko ni Iruzee.

Seishun Collection was 3 months after Genki Pika Pika.

At a glance, the thread title looks like "Maji desu ka, SUCKA!"

I was looking for the title of the c/w, and [トイレに布団を敷いて寝てみたい] came up. I think Maji desu ka? is an appropriate reaction to that name, but it's probably not real. Still, it would be a funny combination. Like Maki's "SOME BOYS TOUCH/ALL OF US"

Huh. As a preview I liked it, but now the full song just sounds really repetitive.

Surprisingly I like this song on my first listening.

I can't make out any of them though (except for Takahashi and Risa sometimes), it's like their voices have been exchanged with a completely different group.

See my original comments, I now think it's worse than I first thought, it doesn't sound anything like MM, it's just boring, generic JPop at its worst .

Assuming this is a Tsunku composition/production boy, has he lost it big time.

I hope, for the sake of the newcomers, it sells the usual 40,000 but I am really struggling to think of a reason why I should get a copy.

It's very much a Koko Ni Iruzee 2.0 but with a little less crack, so I have no clue where you take this "doesn't sound anything like MM" from.

MM has always been mostly Japanese Pop and nothing else, except for the absolutely forgetable ballads now and then. (See my original comment hah)

I'd say most of them are "just" Japanese Pop songs, it's just that they're usually styled into a direction to make it seem not too generic I guess. E.g. Iroppoi Jirettai having that "latina" vibe, Onna Ni Sachi Are feels like a Varieté show with an underlying eurobeat sound, Ai Araba is a cheesy song it's so slow it's for grandmas, Kanashimi Twilight tries really hard to be "dark" and cool with it's subpar guitar riffs, Kanashimi Twilight is emo Musume, Resonante Blue is En Vogue Musume. And. So. On.

You can pretty much break down nearly every H!P song to be a "generic Japanese Pop song" if you want to.

And if you're really seriously saying this is worse than Seishun Collection or brain cells-destryoing Mikan, then I don't know what else to say.

The cookies ended up sounding pretty good. The song is a little repetitive and we've heard those beatbox-things sounds and the HO HO HO before (2:21). Still, I really enjoy this song. The beginning doesn't do it justice, but, by the end, you've gotten a pretty good song experience. If only they had sprung for real horns...

It's exactly the same type of music as Koko Ni Iruzee. Fast, mindless, fun and HYPER.

And how is Mikan not bland compared to this ? Please elaborate.

I like it. Glad that 9th gen get the solo lines and then it's group lines from there on. I don't mind solo lines and then a group chorus, except that it was getting dull since only two to four people got to sing the solo lines.

Overall, I really like it, but it bothers me that the intro is almost exactly cut and pasted as the ending. Couldn't they have stuck in a curveball that sounds completely different from the rest of the song? The "wo wo wo minna lonely boys and girls" of the song.

Speaking of cut & paste, did they really have to write TWO "Ki ni natte Shoganai" lines for Risa? Haha, it's like BE ALL RIGHT where Ayaka only gets to say "tonikaku chotto hitoiki irete". One could have gone to Ai, she can do low notes. At least the SUKA-SUKA-BIITO line was changed a bit the 2nd time around.

The bassline and record scratching part after the 1st chorus is a cool change to the usual sound of the song. Also, in my head, I want to give the ending an obnoxious "THANK YOU!" line.

Someone says Let's Go, sounded like Ai, but I'm sure they'll do that Thank You in concert if they think about it, probably by Risa.

I like the song, I can't help it. I love fun Musume and I don't care if it's generic or whatever. I LOVE FUN MUSIC that pumps me up and I'm not ashamed of it.

I love it still :D Although I do wish it wasn't so repetitive and had a bride thrown in or whatever it's called before the last chorus to break some of that repetitiveness.

I like it a lot more now that I've heard the full song! I really wasn't hearing the Koko ni Iruzee (other than the fact that both are upbeat) comparison until now, but hearing the full song makes me get it. It is a bit repetitive, and the fact that they reuse some of the lyrics makes that more noticeable, but it's still fun and makes me want to bounce around while listening to it. I'm looking forward to seeing what the dance is like.
