Post by strawberryjam »

Could someone cross post our call for translators? Especially at H!O since quite a few people there translate blogs on their blogs.

Just don't copy & paste the page, just write "blog!project is looking for translations" or something. The 100 posts thing might scare people. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

Also, I guess it's better I'm backtracking for Jun Jun. She hardly writes Japanese in her old posts.

It's a nice project, but some long running translators have found a way to make their way convenient, and perhaps are kinda reluctant to leave it. Maybe you can come up with something that'd make it irresistible. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... joyful.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':joyful:' />

As for us, it might be a while long time before we even qualify to help, cause I'm not used to being in forums and posting that often. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

I'll post the call under our blog's news. Can I link to that page? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... joyful.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':joyful:' />

I don't think the 100 post thing needs to be that strict when we know the person quite well (like Sherry).

What did you mean by "their way"?

P.S. I'll be damned if I can find some of those icons in the smilies menu, either I'm blind or 3/4 of them aren't there...

In our case, we make posting emoticons easier. (archiving every new emoticons so that they can be reused easily) I'm also quite proud of our blog's design. (though mostly because it's my work <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/rofl.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> )

But maybe it's not just that, like how you'd like to pool it all in, maybe they also want to finish what they started in 1 place.

Yes, it's fine to link it. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Thank you!

For Jun Jun, she only has :heart2: :heart3: (doesn't really matter) and :usagi2:. The other emoticons she uses are too freaking huge and she doesn't use them that often so you need to upload those yourself. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> Also, rob, if you want pictures on the left in a post, just pick align none rather align left.

For ameblo icons, it's true a decent amount might not be there because some of them are custom made. Just pick one that looks close if it's not there.

Also, we're getting our Mano entries re-translated into French here. It's not every post.. but occasionally.

I have no idea what "gathered writing" means. I also don't know what "assault report" is and when you leave it uncapitalized, it looks like a police report of standard assaults. For that matter, you kept the Japanese title of Uta no Rakuen but chose to translate "assault report" like that -- it makes it very confusing. Is this the title of some media corner that she covered?

Reina's wall that is because of shyness she can't quite talk to people

By meeting various people it can be rid of

I can make lots of comrade

None of this is standard English, which makes it confusing. It would be better as:

Because Reina is shy, I can't talk to people easily.

So, Reina is SO HAPPY

that I was being able to get over that by meeting all kinds of people

and making lots of friends

Oh yeah, you don't need to keep the original if its just punctuation. Since the font is different, all those random commas in Japanese text are confusing too. You can just switch it to your current font or replace it with standard punctuation

So not

but

^Gathered writing is that paper that holds members' writings.. or perhaps signatures. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

突撃レポート, assault report? Or is it reporting? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> The title is regular performer's comments or guests' comments. We usually keep lyrics, song title, tv program title as is.

As I thought, those are the questionable sentences. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

Because of shyness Reina has a wall that makes her won't really start talking to people

By meeting various people she can even get over it

Are we going for English grammar? Because that sentence doesn't sound too natural. A better way of saying it, though not a verbatim translation, would be:

"Because of shyness, Reina has a wall that prevents/stops her from talking to people. By meeting/talking to various people, she can get over that/it."

But it doesn't even make sense to say in English, "I have a wall." <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nfused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Obviously its metaphorical but then you'd translate it more like

"Reina's shyness is like a wall that prevents me from talking to others."

Maybe "gathered writing" and "assault report" are details related to that show she was on.

MAYBE REINA JUST MAKES NO SENSE EVER <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nfused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nfused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nfused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nfused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Assault report is clearly something she made up, because she's the only one who keeps saying it. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

Re: Blog Translations project

Post by tsukinobyouin »

突撃レポート reminds me of Ayaka's 突撃英会話. The literal translation of 突撃 is in fact assault, but it that word in English generally carries violent and unpleasant connotations. Ayaka's English lesson's were called "突撃" because she snuck up on members and surprised them with her lessons. We wouldn't use "assault" in this context, because what she was doing was fun and silly, even if the members probably didn't always want to play along. So in that case "surprise" would be the best translation. I've never seen Uta no Rakuen, but "Surprise Report" might be a good translation in this sense as well.

OR you can always make use of a footnote. For example:

"突撃レポートとゆー

司会を経験するチャンス"

= "The chance to experience the corner 'Totsugeki Report'"*

*Totsugeki Report, or literally "Assault Report" is a segment where guests are interviewed about blah blah blah.

I think footnotes are usually the best way to handle titles or phrases that just don't translate naturally into one phrase in English. It gives you a chance to explain the context, which the reader might not know about if they don't have the opportunity to watch all of these shows (or if the shows aren't subbed and they don't speak Japanese anyway).

If you don't mind my asking, Sherry, are you a native speaker of English? I get the impression that a lot of these issues aren't that you don't understand the Japanese or that you are being too literal - it's just that sometimes your grasp on English grammar is a little weak. I don't mean that to be insulting at all, I'm just stating what I've noticed. Verbs are conjugated incorrectly, tenses don't agree, etc. For example: "Reina has a wall that makes her won't really start talking to people" <- This is just plain incorrect grammar. "Makes her unable to start talking to people" or "keeps her from starting to talk to people" would be correct.

Hmm, can I ask:

帽子が正面すぎる。。

NO AIR ではちゃんと被ってますので。笑

Takahashi is wearing a cap and she's commenting on wearing this outfit while filming this TV show. So I thought it meant that the hat was too forward facing (ie not tilted), so it kind of hid her face. I guess she's making a joke?

"The hat came forward too much

so that off air, I could really hid myself haha"

If she meant ON AIR, then she's probably saying that in the pic it's put on too far forward, but when she's on air it's properly put on. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Edit: lzz also said someone on her group commented on how cute it is that she slipped and said no air instead of on air.

If we can't find a volunteer who isn't already a translator, I wouldn't mind helping. :) It takes much less time to fix some grammar mistakes than it does to do an actual translation.

Rob, I don't think it's a bad thing that you use British-English - it's not like American-English is more grammatically valid or something xD You guys were first, after all.

You know, I was just thinking...

1. Proof-reading won't really work BECAUSE it is a waste of resources

a. Reina posts a lot, a lot, a lot.

b. Proofing will always involve the original blog post for confusing lines. So sometimes it won't just be a matter of cleaning up verb tenses and swapping periods for commas but a revision of whole sentences.

2. We don't need it, really.

a. Does it ultimately matter if Sherry's English is not "standard"? Certain points of the translation are confusing but it isn't like Sherry lacked readers when she was working on her original blog. Maybe people will just figure it out.

b. Sometimes I ask here for a confusing line AND I've had people correct me in the comments. There is a lot of feedback everywhere even without an official checker.

c. Blog entries are fleeting and casual. They are not official news. They are not even memorable, aside from any scandals involved. They come and go by the dozens a day. Although we want to be a reliable resource, its not like we're half assing song lyrics or misinterpreting news.

If the goal is to collect all of the blog translations into one steady resource, we're going to involve lots and lots of people. Even now we have lots of variation in translation style. I'm not going to bug rob and tell him to change all his 笑 signs into "haha"s or "lol" because we each have our own way of doing things. I know we want to keep a certain level of accuracy and "professionalism" but I'm worried about being too inflexible.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I definitely agree that we don't want to be too elitist and inflexible - especially over blog entries. I only meant that instead of rejecting Sherry (or anyone else) because of the points we made earlier on her example post, someone could just help her clarify the particularly confusing parts. :)

When things are horribly wrong I'll change grammar when I see it, but usually all I edit in posts are spelling errors. I could clean up the translators whose English isn't so smooth, but then you've essentially got two translators working on a single post.

Thanks you guys. And really sorry for that. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... pyeyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

To gain more translators, of course you need to be flexible, but if it bothers you so much, then it's okay to just reject. After all, where's the fun in seeing something you don't like lying there next to your work. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

This would be the ideal way. Receiving no feedback, I can only assume our readers understood our translations. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

And Shelly, of course I remember you. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... isfied.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':satisfied:' />

eri made some fair points. Sherry's in then. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' /> I'm really thankful for your patience with us. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> Since you're our first translator that came from somewhere else, you're kind of the the test run, sorry. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> I do also think we should be more flexible in the future. I haven't heard any word for new translators and it's making me so sad. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/sigh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':sigh:' />

Sherry, send me a PM with your email or lzz's email. And what you guys would like to be called. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> If there needs to be 2 accounts, let me know. Also let me know who you guys are planning on translating for so I can prepare the design. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' />

Here's a little helpful guide on how to insert custom emoticons into posts. Custom, as in the ones that are not selectable from the editor and you need to trans-load them from the original blog. Thankfully there are few issues with this now. There are, however, some repeat offenders who still do it wrong sometimes. Not gonna name and shame because I'm nice like that. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... smooch.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='=3=' />

1. First, go to the original blog, right-click the emoticon you want to insert and copy it's location. Ameblo may be blocking right-click now, so you should just disable Java Script for that.

2. Go into the editor, place the cursor where you want to insert the image, and click the Add an Image icon.

02.png

3. Make sure you're at the From Computer tab. Do NOT change to the From URL tab.

4. Click the generic Browse button.

03.png

5. As the File Name, paste the original emoticon location url. Don't worry about where the browser is pointed at your hard drive, that doesn't matter.

6. Click Open.

04.png

7. After that, you will see that the location of the file to be uploaded is somewhere on your HD, precisely in the browser's cache. That's exactly where we wanted it to be.

8. Click Upload.

05.png

9. A window as below will show. The Link URL line will contain a location of the emoticon file on the blog server. We want it empty so remember to click None.

10. Click Insert into Post.

06.png

11. It's done! If you did it right then it will look like this in the HTML editor. It should be just <img> without an <a href> around it.

07.png

Please remember to stick to the above. Berry gets grumpy when she has to keep fixing silly little time-consuming things like this in the posts. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/meh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';/' />
