eri made some fair points. Sherry's in then. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' /> I'm really thankful for your patience with us. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> Since you're our first translator that came from somewhere else, you're kind of the the test run, sorry. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> I do also think we should be more flexible in the future. I haven't heard any word for new translators and it's making me so sad. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/sigh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':sigh:' />

Sherry, send me a PM with your email or lzz's email. And what you guys would like to be called. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> If there needs to be 2 accounts, let me know. Also let me know who you guys are planning on translating for so I can prepare the design. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' />

Not a problem. I totally expected it.

As for whose blog, I don't know which one needs to be translated yet, but I read on the previous page that TnB is a bit behind. If it's okay with her, we'll start there. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... joyful.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':joyful:' />

Maybe later on we'll take Nakazawa's blog. I found nobody translating hers lately. Or is that because of a reason? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

PM TnB to ask if she needs help. Otherwise you're free to translate whoever you want. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Don't sweat it, kiddo. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> It's a lot of little things like this to remember when posting and it's partly our fault for not preparing guides like this in advance. A complete guide is still on our to-do list, but with a lower priority than the site's backend.

And you're certainly not the only offender, so take it easy. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... smooch.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='=3=' />

^Just googled it, and found this from musume-central.

Morning Musume members did not have standard colours before Ishikawa Rika's graduation in 2005, however

some frequently did have the same colour for each concert. Since then, each member has been assigned a colour.
Maybe just match her blog's color? (brown) <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Thanks Sherry. I couldn't find it on google. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> Brown it will be.

Well, I've been trying to be aggressive in getting more translators. Finally got one response from Rokun!

You didn't bother me, but I'm not really sure I want to try and go through that whole process to just post my translations somewhere else... It's easy to re-post pictures from ameblo to ameblo, and well... people know me well already at jphip, JPM... starting to get to know people more at H!O too. Don't really want to have to spend the time around my already busy schedule (made busier by the translations...) just to try to "prove" myself on another forum so I can post translations there.

....

I just know doing these detailed translations takes time as it is, so trying to utilize another system (for example, the described way of throwing custom emoticons in is rather scary, especially since there are loads from the Serend blogs I translate) when this is working fine seems a bit fruitless at this point.

Maybe we should be more flexible. If people have a blog, regularly update, good enough language skills, then I think it's best if we just let them join blog!project. Sure they have to join the BBS to at least communicate with us. What do you guys think?

Also about emoticons, I'll try to implement separate emoticon menus for gree, ameblo, and serend in the future. It's just that I will never be able to do all the custom emoticons, just the basic ones. I guess this is one thing we can't really, really do.. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />

Screw emoticons, seriously. If anything, just make a stock library and if you feel it absolutely needs them, use the closest match.

You can always link the original post if people absolutely need to see the original emoticons.

Hello there. This is rokun who strawberryjam just mentioned talking to. I am glad to see someone's trying to consolidate these a bit, and it'd be nice if it was able to be successful. Unfortunately I think long-time H!P fans have pretty set ideas of how they want to do things, so it's a bit of an uphill climb...

As you can see from my blog she linked above, for a time now I've been posting daily translations of mostly Berryz' blogs, including Serend from mostly MiyaSaki, and Saki's ameblo. I've also been doing Reina's blog since despite how long it's been going on, I was dissatisfied with what was already out there... plus I just enjoy giving my own spin on it. I also wonder if it's because her blog could tend to be a bit more "intimidating" than others <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> since she tends to use very stylized language, and also kinda make up words a lot of the time. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I actually noticed you guys having a discussion earlier about one of her entries. Here was my interpretation of that: http://ameblo.jp/iluvatarin/entry-10819810930.html. Seems like I remember reading about another one too... but oh well. I actually just included the "Assault Reporter" language because, for one, it's a term she's been using for a long time now (which can of course be explained in an initial footnote) to refer to the online "corners" she has when she interviews UtaRaku guests. Also, in the context of "reporter", using the word "assault" makes sense to me since, in a way, the reporter does kind of "attack" the guest without them being able to escape from it. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Well, anyway, that's why I kept it.

Anyway, the general point is, I think Reina's blog (as others perhaps) takes a bit of creativity, and it may not sound like "perfect, normal" English cause well... she rarely uses just "normal" Japanese to begin with. But also, to get a true sense of connotation, I believe it's sometimes counterproductive to try to make the English "too perfect". I actually began translating things myself more since I was dissatisfied with a lot of the translations I saw out there... from various subbings to blogs like these. That's not to say I'm perfect - definitely a work-in-progress still - but I aim to get the best possible taste of these girls' characters through their blogs (this is actually a continuation of all the fanfics I've written and contributed to over the years, mostly at jphip - us writers focus very strongly on trying to let the girls' true character shine).

As for emoticons... IMO those that use many of them (which Reina does, Saki, Miya when they can, etc.) show a bit of their character and the character of their posts in them, so that's why I try to keep them as carbon-copied as possible. On ameba it's easy, since all that really needs to be done is to select the source picture, ctrl-C, and then paste it into your editor. It works that way for pictures, emoticons... whatever. I don't even remember how you guys normally do pictures.

Anyway ^^; Sorry to make this first post so long~ <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /wacko.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

As for people "getting to know us" via MM-BBS....to be quite frank, I don't really see a need for this (unless of course the person wanted to!). I always thought it was weird that we somehow absorbed Project! Hello as an MM-BBS exclusive type thing when it was never set up to be that way in the beginning. I realize that both sites are now hosted by the same server as MM-BBS and that makes both things sort of "ours." But I feel like these two sites being "ours" just means that members here make the administrative decisions and such, and it gives us some things to help promote the BBS in general, to have the BBS contribute to Hello! Project fandom in some way. Not that either project should be some exclusive thing that only a select in-crowd can work on. If we do that, we'll only ever be able to cover a limited amount of stuff. We've been a pretty small online community for a long time now, and most of us seem to like it that way. All we need are some good, dedicated translators - not new bffs. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

That being said - I definitely think it's good for the people working on blog project to keep in touch with each other so that we can ask each other questions, deal with technical difficulties, make arrangements for when people are going to be temporarily unavailable to translate, decide who's covering which blog, etc. So as long as the new recruits show that they're good, dedicated translators and can just check this one thread from time to time, I say that's a pretty good deal.

As for emoticons....I'm with Al on this one.

I can't stop feeling worried that no one will want to join our project. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' /> Well, I'm glad Sherry has at least. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' /> I just don't want our hard work to go to waste..

Anyways, I changed the post limit to nothing. For rokun and any others that don't know the history, the reason why we have these post limits is because of projecthello. We had serious problems before with many people submitting really horribly done lyrics just so they could see their name on the site. I know it sucks, but they ruined it. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... dammit.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' /> I'm trying to make things better, like by adding an error form on projecthello, at least.

So it isn't really about promoting the BBS though in my heart, it's what I want too at the same time. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> I know it's nice, but I'm already really proud what our little community has done already.

I guess emoticons are like translation style. Well, rokun, I will try my best to fix the emoticons. So you're always free to join us.

OOhh I never knew about rokun's blog -- lovely! Also, hi! Nice to meet you.

Hm, I always thought the mm-bbs/projecthello/blogproject relationship was administrative. Projecthello submissions are one time deals and they are either correct or incorrect. However, it is hard to properly manage the blog if people make lots of mistakes with no form of communication with the rest of us. Just think of all the times we've had to go over uploading those damn pictures already <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' /> Also, we've already had people swap blogs and cover for each other too - all facilitated by communicating here.

So, I DO think it is important that all the translators have some on-going thread or subforum to iron out problems. Since we already use mm-bbs, it makes sense to ask people to join mm-bbs AT THE VERY LEAST to access this thread, right?

Oh no, I agree. At the very least, translators gotta be committed to visiting this thread and post. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /frown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':frown:' /> Otherwise I'll get angry. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... dammit.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' />

Watch me sneak back into this thread. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nceman.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':danceman:' />

I was wondering if I could help?

Here's a sample of my work

From Koharu's blog here

I think this is okay <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /frown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':frown:' />

Thanks to everyone who came to the handshake event! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /heart.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /heart.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

It was so much fun seeing the different types of people there. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /heart.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /heart.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I wonder how many people overslept. heehee

When I oversleep, it's amazing how my hair gets on its own. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

A bit later, there was this guy with a baseball cap spitting all over the place. If I had said "We can all see, you know? Why are you spitting so much straight ahead?", I think he wouldn't stop spitting entirely, but decide to spit behind himself more and more instead. lol We can see an increasing amount of yankees.

After that, it was Mr. Doumoto Tsuyoshi's turn to answer questions for his drama's production. lol

He was such a nice person when I asked him questions. lol lol

Next time, Koharu really wants to post a surprise to everyone~

How can we get activated to post translations to blog!project? I'd like to at least try it out in the morning, though I'll probably cross-post a bit at first. People seem to be pretty used to my ameba by now...

As for trying to get translators together here... While I was recently browsing around online for them myself, I actually didn't see much in the way of anyone doing regular translations outside of say Hyakupa. Sayu seems well taken care of between there and here, but it's actually pretty difficult to find others. That might actually give you an opportunity to really get something started here. It's also how I ended up translating the blogs I've followed... For a long time I'd been following Reina's, Ai's, Berryz Serend and now Saki's. Someone generally does keep up with Ai's in her H!O thread, and I have a friend who's at times done it at jphip. I've also come across Reina!Project - is that related to here? But there's been absolutely nothing for the Berryz, which is my main fandom anyway. It's too bad, because these direct posts from the girls are I feel some of the better info we can get in order to get to know them better.

I think it's hard as a smaller forum though to try to become "the place" to go for these things... though perhaps there's a start with the projecthello link. I'm also afraid though that the MM-BBS affiliation might hurt a bit, because on other forums throughout the years I've seen MM-BBS develop not the best reputation... that it may be a bit unwelcoming or something. I admit I was clouded a bit by that too at first, but after talking to strawberryjam a little she seems like a kind and earnest person. ^^ So that's why I'm here.

As for the emoticons... don't worry too much about them. I could likely figure out some way to make it work.

Ahahahaha. It is funny to remember that this place used to be "mean." Mm-bbs turned into flowers rainbow unicorns hearts ice cream love fest when Strawberry became admin.

Anyway, I didn't know people just did blog translations in the H!O forums. That is kind of tedious to scroll through the comments, isn't it? I wish whoever did Ai could just do it on this blog instead. That way, I can focus on someone else.

^ lol, well I can believe that with what I've seen from strawberry so far. Somehow it'd be great to get the word out that it's different now... as long as people are willing to listen, I suppose. People seem attached to their own sites. I know I kinda was for a good while... but I've started branching out a bit lately. I guess I kinda share the vision to bring the international H!P community together more... not that I could do it. I'm happy to see what happens at things like AX a couple years ago and what might be at Sakuracon next month. They really seem to make some progress toward it. But well...

Oh, to your second part: that person (KaitoDoraemon) does post it in Ai's thread, but also has an H!O blog for it. So scrolling isn't that bad a deal if that's all you wanna see...

Someone check Nao's translation, please. She's posted a fair amount around the other parts of the forum, decent posts too, so I trust she'll regularly check this thread too. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

So rokun, this means you want to give b!p a try? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nceman.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':danceman:' /> If so, PM me your email address. I assume you want to be known as rokun. Also, you'll be cross-posting Miyabi, Saki, and Reina? I'll need to prepare the designs for those girls if that's the case. But if you post Reina, I don't know if Sherry will be happy. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

And if we moved translations to b!p, R!P will be dead once again. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' /> (something about hard work goes to waste <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> )

Nice to meet you too rokun. I don't know what you mean by "winning", but we'll do our best to improve. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... joyful.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':joyful:' />

Screw emoticons, seriously. If anything, just make a stock library and if you feel it absolutely needs them, use the closest match.
I don't know if rokun has a problem with your work. It just may be different styles, but I can understand if you want to keep your own website. I enjoy running websites a lot (obviously) so I probably wouldn't be too keen on joining myself. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> It's impossible to make all translators want to join b!p, but we can try our best within our means.

Ah, that's not what I meant at all, Sherry! From what I've seen the translations you guys do at R!P aren't bad. :) What I meant was that I didn't see an easily accessible translation place that seemed very connected to the forums I frequent, which is where I'd really like best to share these since I think they're a great hub for fans, and I also have many friends there. R!P seemed to be more of like it's own independent entity...

We can try to figure something out to get Reina's translations posted here - my main concern is that someone's doing them somewhere easily visible.

Also, as you said strawberry, I will certainly do some Berryz' Serends and Saki's ameba, since it seems pretty definite no one else is taking care of them ^^; Do you really have to load a new format for each girl? As for the Serends, Miyabi and Saki are who I constantly keep up with, but I sometimes do the others too. Is there a way you could make just a "Berryz" format for their Serends? That way they could all just be posted there, especially since they're just very brief entries. Saki would need a separate one of course for her Ameba... Like I said, I'll probably cross-post a bit first too at least until if we get more settled in here.

I'll sent my email over to you too! And don't be too harsh on those who struggle with English :) there are many hard-working ESL members of our international community... Of course if they're trying to post translations that's one thing, but just hanging out at the forum is different. ^^

I'm sorry to say this Nao, but this translation is pretty bad. Here are corrections below in red so you can see what I mean:
From Koharu's blog here

I think this is okay <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /frown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':frown:' />

Thanks to everyone who came to the handshake event! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /heart.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /heart.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

It was so much fun seeing the different types of people there. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /heart.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /heart.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I wonder how many people overslept. heehee -> A lot of the people there had overslept. heehee

When I oversleep, it's amazing how my hair gets on its own. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> -> The people who overslept and came just as they were had crazy hair. ("amazing" is a correct translation of sugoi, but she's referring to the fact that they didn't brush their hair or anything before coming in so it was all over the place. I used crazy instead, since "amazing" in English could be misinterpreted to sound like "amazingly their hair was perfect")

-> Also, there was a guy who had on a baseball cap with the brim super straight forward, and when I said "I can really see you well. w Why do you have it on so straight?", instead of turning the brim to the side, he actually turned it around to the back.w I could see him even better, you know?--- (やんけ is sort of an ending 'particle' that makes the sentence into a question. 'Yankee' would be ヤンキー)

After that, it was Mr. Doumoto Tsuyoshi's turn to answer questions for his drama's production. lol -> Also, there were people who asked if I've watched all of Mr. Domoto Tsuyoshi's dramas in order. w

He was such a nice person when I asked him questions. lol lol -> They asked pretty core questions. (I'm not entirely sure I understand her use of コア here either)

Next time, Koharu really wants to post a surprise to everyone~
I think the main problem is that you're having trouble telling who the subject of the sentence is, and without fully understanding the context of the sentence you're making guesses or choosing the wrong options for words you don't know. ツバ can mean spit, but if you look it up in the dictionary, the second result is "brim (of a hat)" which obviously fits better since she's talking about someone's baseball cap. As for the part about Domoto Tsuyoshi, I'm guessing she must be a fan of his. But if you look him up, he's a hugely famous drama actor and member of Johnny's, i.e. someone who wouldn't likely be hanging out at Koharu's handshake event. A lot of times these girls will refer to shows/people/events that we probably wouldn't have heard of, which makes translating in context kind of hard =/ I have to look that kind of stuff up a lot to make Sayu's blog make sense in the translation xD

Side question to everyone: How do you guys feel about the use of "w" in posts? I know it's supposed to be like "lol", but is this well understood outside of Japanese forums? Would it be better to translate them to lols or hahas?

Oh, I misread what you read when I replied to you in the PM about this. I'm not sure what you mean exactly. Don't all these girls have their own blogs? So wouldn't it be better if they have their own category? Or are you translating from a Berryz blog? It's not a big problem making a design for each girl. I just need to change the colors. And it keeps things more organized.

Ah, it's not a problem if people have difficulty with English. It's only a problem when people are from America, for example, and born there, but choose to type horribly. Though I can understand still if people have some problems with English. It's just..ah... when people are capable, but don't. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

As for the "warau" thing, I don't think aine knew what it meant. I think it should be translated.

And Nao, I'm sorry. The editors said you had decent enough Japanese before, I think. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

BTW guys, try to finish up any remaining discussions and not bring up a new topic for the time being. I'm gonna have to open up a new thread soon and close this one.

I don't think the "w" is widely understood, since it doesn't come up often unless you're looking at the original Japanese text. It'd be better to translate it to lol or haha, because if you leave the "w"s in, you're probably going to have to leave a TL note for it.

Well, if you look at the Berryz Serend site, all the girls' entries are collected into one main-page blog, though they do each have a separate page for themselves too. I just thought it might be easier to have it in one translation blog here since they're all just short entries anyway, and I may not do all of them all the time. If it's really no problem though to set up a format for each girl, like if it's just a color issue, that's probably the best solution.

As for the "w" thing, I think Asians in general (meaning those who live in Asia) tend to know it pretty commonly, but I doubt too many Americans do. I always just translate it to "lol" since it's what we're more used to. Same thing with the 笑 character.

I see. Yeah, I know we're pretty bad in advertising R!P. We've only been relying on google and sayunii for our traffic source. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />

Thanks a lot. That makes sense. I didn't really get what Koharu was getting at when she was referring to ツバ and Doumoto Tsuyoshi.

The Japanese I've learned was from my grandfather, so what I know has gaps here and there. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

I'll try again after I become more familar with Japanese that's a bit more up-to-date.

I NEVER KNEW WHAT "w" MEANT! I actually thought it was kinda like making the "v" sign.

Also, thanks Nao and TnB for the blog translation. Koharu seems like a brat. I can't believe she's making fun of the fans that went to her handshake event!

For mentioning bedhead? I wouldn't call that making fun of the fans persay, just a bit rude.

You weren't referring the "spit" paragraph, were you...? That was a mistranslation on my part and the corrections by TnB make far more sense put into context. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

As far as w and 笑 are concerned, they're not words/phrases that really matter so much, but I prefer them as english acronyms, especially the ones that are in kanji. It looks far better as the original, but I find it weird to find random japanese in an english post.
