Goto Maki - "LOVE" minialbum

Maki will release her 4th mini-album on May 4, "LOVE." There will be 5 tracks. 1 will be a dance song, the lead song will be a ballad (with 2 PVs), and there will be a cover of Sora to Kimi no Aida ni from Miyuki Nakajima. The 4 non-cover songs will be written by Maki.





There will be 3 versions: Regular CD, Regular CD+DVD and Don Quixote CD+DVD. C+D and DQC+D will have different versions of the PV, but both should have a making-of.





Maki's staff also hinted at another announcement next week.

ika otoko is right. Don Quixote (or donki for short, for extra lol) is the name of a chain of stores in Japan that sell just about everything. Maki has had a Don Quixote edition for most of her releases so far. You can only buy this edition in those stores.

How many of these cheesy mini-albums have there been now? Is this the 3rd or 4th? They could have made two complete albums by now.



The only good thing about the mini-albums is the high number of PVs we get on the DVD. Something H!P never gave us with a CD.



But still, Avex releases Ayu and Koda Kumi albums all the time with full DVDs of PVs included in the set. Why can't they do that with Maki?

Because Maki isn't a guaranteed sales diva like Ayu and KK. Plus, she's still pretty new. She'll need time to figure out her shtick.

Just wanna say Maki writing the lyrics for some of the songs isn't new. She wrote the lyrics for 5 out of the 8 tracks on SWEET BLACK. TBH maki looks terrible... I don't agree that she has always been too thin, it seems to be a last few years thing.



As for Reina, tbh... she looks like every other girl I've seen in Japan around her age.

Song Review Time:



01. Ashiato - I like it. This type of song is always something I'm a sucker for.



02. Hanataba - Hmm... I keep wanting it to turn into something more. It's a mellow song and I have to be in the mood for mellow songs. However, I do give it points for having a more complicated instrumental than most other mellow songs. If she gave it a little punch somewhere I would like it more. She almost does at the very end, but it seems like it's just...louder instead of punchier lol.



03. Koi Hitoyo - Another slow song? The vocals are more interesting than Hanataba but I like the instrumental from that former track more. I like the rest but I wish the comeback would've made a bigger impression. The little "ooOO" in the background kind of annoy me. I like the little bit that starts at 3:23. Sadly it doesn't last until the end of the song.



04. FAKE - Fake as a song name is a hard thing to live up to. There are many songs named "fake" I love. I'm glad she went for more of a rock theme but...why...does her voice sound like the same processing for 2 and 3 were used on it? It would be amazing if the producer or whoever is in charge of that kept a little bit of rawness to her voice. I imagine live will be an infinitely better track, but will we ever get to see it? I can hear that Maki tried to give it some oomph but it was suppressed so she gets points for that. But there's nothing stand out about this song because it's pretty by the book for a pop star trying to do a edgier rock.



05. Age Kyoku - Oh thank God it's another ballad. I want to like this song so so so badly. Like FAKE, if I ever hear the song live I bet my review will go up. Her strong vocals plus the crowd doing "hey" will be a treat. DO IT TRY IT JUST FIND OUT is my new motto. Based on potential....





ALBUM REVIEW:

I take my words from above: Love is not so mellow, gawd Maki, do you have a secret husband you've been married 50 years to or something? Sheeet, even golden couples have a little fun now and then. Maybe you'd have more energy if you ate more sandwiches or the eat a sandwich equivalent in Japan. What, there were only two slow songs? That's one too many, especially after a strong-ish opening. It feels like Maki is still trying to find herself musically. I'm glad she's doing more rockish songs because that's what I always liked from her. But nothing here screams "MAKI GOTO". It's all been done by artists with better performances because it's their style and she's trying to imitate it. There's nothing amazing here and no defining song. Once she finds her musical hook (if we get to see her go that far, I'm so scared Avex will drop her) she'll pump out some amazing stuff. After all, she's Maki Goto. Her live performances are always strong; I hope I get to see these songs performed sometime.
