I would rather see MM retire gracefully whilst they still have some respect then deteriorate into a pale, unpopular shadow of what they once were flogging around Japan to bring in a few more bucks to the UFA coffers.

I seriously love how everytime something is announced about Morning Musume the board becomes Nostradamus and predicts the downfall. It's been years and they're still trucking along. Single/Album/DVD sales don't matter, I bet they still make buttloads off their concerts since they're constantly touring year-round. Morning Musume will stop whenever they're not profitable, I think we've had this discussion ten thousand times already.

If Tsunku is excited about morning musume it can only mean good things. Better than being indifferent and handing out the crap songs TNX passed on.

Hate to rain on your parade of spoilerness but he had a boy and a girl not two girls. Unless he castrated the boy like they did Risa, there's no way he's getting in.

There's no raining because I can't be bothered to keep up with the children of Tsunku.

New Shamalayan:

If he has the boy crossdressing ala Idolmaster DS it will lure wota in by the hundreds if the sales increase following that announcement was any indicator....

CHRIST ON A CRACKER. Look,

Morning Musume peaked circa 2002, before they had to resort to things that screamed "Gimmick" to all of Japan: randomly adding Fujimoto, splitting the group into 2 rival factions, ballooning into a 15 member disaster, and starting Hello Project Kids (that everyone bitched about on this board when they first showed up, remember?). Turtle, where the fuck have you been the last 9 years? What is this absurd fantasy you have about how Morning Musume was objectively at their peak when they had to import 2 Chinese girls in and Koharu Kusumi became the only solo singer in all of H!P????

One thing the group has done RIGHT recently is re-diversified the entire company. For some time now, Morning Musume was not a generational set of "daughters" but more like a high school class (small sets of girls all within a few years apart, exacerbated by skipped auditions etc). But there is now intense competition from Girls Generation, AKB, etc, who also follow that "same-age-classroom-of-girls" model. Also in sound, image, age, and experienece they were on par with the "Kids" groups like Berryz and Cute. They only real soloist was Koharu, who was an anime star and much younger than everyone else -- hence her success seemed marginal and isolated from her "day job" at Morning Musume and in general she was an outlier.

Within the last few years, the company seems to have aggressively changed their business model. We now have multiple groups with somewhat distinct images and sounds who are ALL EXPERIENCED (including S/mileage because they came from Eggs). This has been quite successful - Buono has their own fandom and S/mileage is EVERYWHERE now. After Kikkawa's recent debut, we have two soloists that seem to be quite different from each other, again in sound and image. And now, we're returning attention to Morning Musume and keeping the idea of "inexperienced girls" fresh but not actually doing that at all. Mizuki was an egg and she is very experienced with the company in general. Riho is Riho, who already participated in some UFA events. Erina had a bit of dance and modeling training and only Suzuki is a certified newbie at everything. So we have youth, diversity, talent, and a range of interesting personalities to liven up what was a group in stasis.

My favorite time is bullet point time.

1. YOU were still a huge fan even when the group had already lost their golden status.

2. THEY still survived a decade of ridiculousness and regularly hit the top 10, regularly make media appearances, and regularly tour extensively (even globally). If this is not your idea of a successful group, then who are you comparing them to?!

3. Morning Musume has always been an idol training school. It is hilarious that everyone is panicking because the experienced members are leaving. Well, of course they are! That is the whole goddamn point of their group.

4. Furthermore, with the exception of Takahashi, NONE OF THOSE GIRLS WERE GOOD WHEN THEY FIRST STARTED EITHER. So, the 12 years olds that joined yesterday? Yes, you can rest assured that they will likely develop into solid idols within a year or so.

5. The group is more exciting now than it has been in the dark ages of Mikan. Stop projecting your personal taste as an objective status for the whole group.

TL;DR AUDITIONS ARE GOOD

I still want someone named Saki in the group so everyone can have a Saki of their very own and then Tsunku can make an awesome 4 person unit with all of them. (You know you want it to happen, admit it!)

It's just still too soon. The new girls should have at least had a full year before this happened, giving them roughly a year and a half in the group to get their roles established. If this is a way to stick the few remaining Eggs into HP, it could be a quick audition since they'd need little training time. If it's random girls then it will probably be a couple of months to pick them and a couple to train them and we could see them as early as the fall tour. That's way too fast.

I'm sorry but when have I ever said that? In fact the reverse is true.

I personally think MM were at their best between 2002 and 2004, until the 9th Gen arrived I thought, musically speaking, they were at their worst in the last few years and their concerts were generally average.

Really, competition from Girls Generation, last single sold over 100K and AKB48, last single sold over a million. That's not competition that's murder, I think they have killed MM and buried the body in the woods at midnight.

I may be wrong but they don't seem to do much TV escept when they have a single out and even then it's hardly saturation coverage. Yes they tour but they, generally, aren't playing the big venues anymore.

Globally, come on, one trip to the US and one to France (ignoring the Pacific Rim stuff), are they now big in the US or France?

OK, let's compare them to AKB48.......

At what stage in the past did they rip out the talented members (assuming Risa will be out soon) and leave a combination of largely hopeless singers and almost no public awareness of the members (except foe Sayumi).

They have to get them in early so Takahashi can give as much "senpai" time as possible.

"senpai" time
That's such a great term. Especially since the Japanese senpai means more than just teacher/elder.

I need to use this from now on and maybe even use and connote in one of my papers.

I'll give you some credit if I ever make it big in Japanese studies, petit.

I wouldn't mind kicking out all the older girls, filling up with more newbies and then writing them some good songs for a change!!!

And bring back one older girl to act as mentor/group leader to the young 'uns--I nominate Nono!

Turtle, you are cherry picking details but you have no consistent position other than to complain.

You declare that MM should retire instead of "deteriorating" into a shadow of their former selves...but then state that they have already done so since at least 2004 And yet, even though you managed to keep your fandom since 2004 (while MM has since "deteriorated" even more presumably), this is totally irrelevant to the immediate death of the group in 2011 because there will be no fans ever again doom gloom. Even though there has been little public awareness of the individual Morning Musume members since the 4th generation, with the slim exception of Fujimoto and perhaps Sayumi, it is really the anonymity of the current line up that will somehow sink the ship for good?

I gather you only understand success when someone is selling millions of CD sales and media "saturation," playing only in "big venues" and having an active global fandom. Anything less would threaten the longevity of the group and hence, this is why sales should be a concern to the average fan? Hyperbolic. Not only has MM ridden out (dragged out?) their loss of #1 idol status, they are probably the #3 idol and that's pretty good. There are many groups that have reached legendary status that keep on due to the loyalty of their fans. So as long as the group is satisfying their fans, then they will keep on somehow and even in their 30s and 40s get to make a terrible Dream Musume cd

And this is not a 9th gen thread, so I won't go into your stubborn and arbitrary hatred of them. They've been around for only a short period of time and you argue this is too little time for anyone to love them and yet ample time to "prove" why they are awful to you, with or without "regular, sustained TV presence." See, now that's just hating for the sake of it
isn't that you projecting your personal taste as an objective status for the whole group?
By projecting, I am talking about the inherently subjective nature of fandom. Fans will attach themselves to their favorite member or era and find that time "the best" and the loss of that, "the worst/end/doom gloom." I am guilty of this too. However, objectively speaking in terms of group activity, this is a much more exciting time for all of H!P than it was a few years ago. There are many groups and soloists now with a wider range of talent and activity than we've seen in some time. We have restarted the hype of auditions too and it seems the era of gimmicky auditions are over (skipped years, trying to manufacture "Miracle" status, "study abroad" idols, etc).

tl;dr

I'm not saying anyone "has to" like anyone or anything. However, I've been around long enough to know that no change ever signals the End.

I meant they were at their peak (to me at least) from 2002 to 2004 and although they slipped from there it's only since about 2009 I started to feel something was going wrong. I would have thought there was still a good recognition of members until the 8th Gen since Hello! Morning was still around and they seemed to be still appearing on other TV shows. My point with the anonymity of the current members is that it's not going to encourage new fans and loosing Eri and Ai especially is liable to make some of the older fans stop following them. I certainly never thought there would come a time when I didn't buy a MM single, previously I even bought ones I didn't like very much.

If MM were holding their sales that would be OK but they aren't, especially album sales and what does that mean except a declining fan base? Maybe the last single was a sales blip but what if it shows a further drop in sales what then?

Why does everybody think I hate the 9th Gen when I keep saying I don't , I think they are cute and sweet but I just don't think they are talented (other than Riho at dancing) and I may be wrong but I don't think there will be any sort of significant improvement in the near future.

The reason people here know about the 9th Gen is because we are all pretty hardcore fans (but not in a wota sense I hasten to add) and we watch all the YouTube/torrent things to do with MM and we know about them. If UFA aren't showcasing them then casual or potential new fans won't know or care about them. MM has always had a number of talented, by idol standards at least, members to offset the ones who weren't and got by on their personality.

With Ai gone and Risa on marked time do you think the other members can carry the group especially on live performance if they are going to be miming all the time?

Turtle is like the second coming of AEUG. Did we do a 2011 predictions thread? Maybe we can just lay down bets about the survival of MM and come back and check to see who won in a year or two. Then we could just stop having this argument in every single MM thread.

4 bloodtypes and 8 different prefectures are represented by Morning Musume.

That's probably about as diverse as they can get, short of having Chinese members.

Also, I don't believe that Turtle lives in a bitch-cave.

He at least took the time to explain his view.

If MM were holding their sales that would be OK but they aren't, especially album sales and what does that mean except a declining fan base? Maybe the last single was a sales blip but what if it shows a further drop in sales what then?

With Ai gone and Risa on marked time do you think the other members can carry the group especially on live performance if they are going to be miming all the time?
Hm I don't know. I feel like UFA/H!P has a relatively good structure to encourage fandom and keep it consistent - usually its just piggy-backed onto existing fans. I started noticing this in the way the girls always kind of pimp each other out on the blogs or how they have joint concert events. I believe Yuuka Maeda said this explicitly about the C-ute and s/mileage joint concert. In that sense, I'm not particularly concerned about exposure.

Also, their sales are super low for the last few albums but I don't know how much we can worry about that. In terms of Singles, they still hit top #10 on Oricon (AKB hits #1 but they only got super popular c2009). In terms of Albums....well, there has been overall decline in sales over the last decade. Would they disband the group based on album sales you think? I think they'd just redirect the group to be more "idol" oriented and less of a legit music group. They've already started doing that anyhow.

I really do think the girls can hold their own without Takahashi and Risa.

Try not to draw upon sales figure as law, a lot of fans have moved over to things like itunes which don't get counted.

I know a lot of the young kids at my school all have phones, music players etc and for them to buy a physical cd is pretty rare.

I was pretty shocked to hear one of my older students (16 I think) actually bought the last MM song (mp3 download) because she thought the whole punk rock look was cool and wanted to copy it.

Anyway... what I think I'm trying to say is that declining sales figures might not mean a declining fan base, but rather a fan base that prefers to get their copies of the song elsewhere.

I agree that it's hard to be accurate about sales since there is no reliable indication of legal downloads but I would guess that whatever the ratio is it would be the same for any artist so if they are struggling to make the top 20 it's still a potentially worrying trend.

It's really all about concert attendances, if that holds up then they will be OK. Can anybody like alita who goes to concerts say what ticket availability is like compared with 3 or 4 years ago.

I'd say, given the demographics....

H!P fans are downloading at a much higher rate than EXILE fans or whatever.

I doubt there's anything that can boost Morning Musume's popularity at this point.
Good songs might. They haven't tried that in a while, but it is entirely possible that the MM brand is just so toxic to too many pop music consumers that even good songs won't help at this point.
I would rather see MM retire gracefully whilst they still have some respect then deteriorate into a pale, unpopular shadow of what they once were flogging around Japan to bring in a few more bucks to the UFA coffers.

My man, that ship sailed a long time ago. What you've been witnessing for the past five years (IMO) is the very definition of "(deteriorating) into a pale, unpopular shadow of what they once were flogging around Japan to bring in a few more bucks to the UFA coffers."

The audition is obviously Tsunku saying "I fucked up when I picked these particular four girls." He's obviously not seeing his original vision for them panning out since he's not even giving them a chance to finish their first tour before needing to add more to the mix. I blame Mizuki. I think he had a lot of hopes pegged on her, being the oldest and an Egg, but she's quickly falling behind the others.

Mizuki was one of the newer and more unknown Eggs, which makes you wonder if he thought an Egg would be an improvement, why Mizuki? There were plenty of other Eggs who'd been around awhile and probably would have came in with more of an established fanbase. I think Mizuki's voice might go somewhere, but she's definitely not looking like someone who is going to do anything to gain anyone's attention. She's a side-liner who's just happy to be there. Even Erina is breaking out of her shell. She looks like she's enjoying herself more than anyone at the concerts, judging by pictures I've seen.

There aren't that many Eggs left, though. It looks like they've basically gotten rid of everyone who's either been around way too long, or they didn't think they were ever going to do anything with.

Tickets seem to be harder to come by on auction if that is any indication. Concerts are generally sold out, the on-the-day tickets probably being ones people reserved through FC but didn't pay for. I know when I was looking for a ticket for my boyfriend to the weekend's concert there were only a few on auction, much less than before when people bought several then sold them all. I don't know about ticket resellers but I refuse to step foot in those shops because I don't want to support unfair selling but I would assume they have quite a few of the good seats going for ridiculous amounts but that is normal.

As for demographics, there are A LOT of girls now at concerts. The past three events I have gone to (Maji release event, Dream Musume tour, Musume tour) have had a ratio of probably 60 to 40 for girls to boys. And a very vast age range. Sitting behind me I had two early 20s girls who looked more like the type to freak out over Arashi, one with a Sayu fan and one with Riho. In the lobby I walked by two near-grannys fawning over the adorable young girls. And I have seen groups of 6-10 high school girls at nearly every concert I have been to in the past year. Not to mention the amazing girl who cosplays one of Reina's outfits every event, a different outfit every time. And this annoying girl who screams "Sayu Sayu Sayu!" throughout the whole concert and is at every concert.

So yeah, I would say the fandom is pretty diverse, even if people aren't always admitting they go to these events to the people around them.

Maybe he's trying to clear everyone out to start something new? Like Eggs came after Kids and now we need an Eggs 2.0?

Edit: alita, I would LOVE to go to a concert with you The one and only concert I was kindly invited to by Nekobus YEARS ago was pretty much 90% 30 year old men

In this news report from yesterday on the Dream Morning Musume tour you get a good idea of the fan base. You see the reporter interviewing the usual wotas, but also couples, families, and normal looking people.

And to stay on topic there's a short mention that 10th gen auditions are starting.
