But Farrah, Risa was a huge MM fan before joining, she is the one I think truly loved the group the most, at least for the first several years of her run.

Maybe a lot of these girls really loved the group before joining, but became disillusioned after? I dunno, I figure for preteen girls, sparkly idoldom looks awesome, but when it becomes their job it's not so fantastic anymore.



Though H!P girls have nothing on South Korean groups as far as that goes.

I actually think Risa seemed a lot more into being IN Morning Musume than Ai. . . probably not the best example, I'll admit. She was a really good leader and seemed to take that role very seriously. I guess everyone looks disinterested in comparison to Sayu, who is halfway to being a wota for her own group. But in general, I feel like recent generations have been mainly populated by wanna-be starlets who grew up with stage parents - the kind of girls that got singing and dance lessons from the time they could walk because momma wanted their baby girl to be a star. This is definitely the vibe I get from Riho, since there are videos of her singing on stage from when she couldn't be any older than 9 or 10. I'm not saying there's anything inherently wrong with that, but the feel of "girls becoming a member of the group they idolize, breaking the fourth wall" is kind of gone these days. Eripon has her whole Risa-wota thing going on, but I've always felt like it was kind of tacked on, tbh.

This is true of most of the 9th-10th gen. I have a feeling that for most of them it's partly true and partly manufactured. Fans always love people who are "one of us." If I remember correctly Eripon came into it not knowing much about MM at all. Eripon's Risa fandom probably arose once she met Risa and gained a role model and then was egged on by producers who saw something they could exploit and fans who were happy to have someone who was "one of us." All of the 9th and 10th gen girls talk about how much they love MM and H!P. I know many of them came in with little knowledge about H!P, but joining it and having all that history to learn about and experience for the first time was probably pretty exciting and helped them fall in love with the group they're in. But at the same time, like with Eripon, being a fan looks good so they're probably all egged on.

You're forgetting Mizuki and Haruka who were Eggs before. I'm sure their love for the group is legit. Masaki probably didn't even have a clue they existed, but she's their mascot/pet now. Riho and Ayumi are most likely using it since they just wanted to be famous.
