Double eyelids are a beauty standard that is specific to Asia (like having a "small face"). It is deemed a very important aspect of being a good looking person. Getting a tiny little fold in your eye is no different than getting 1 millimeter sliced off your nose in America or getting liposuction - all of them are minor "improvements" that are only really recognizable to their respective societies.



And because of this standard, it is actually very hard to find makeup tutorials in Japan for single lids...because imo, standards of beauty are WAY MORE NARROW in Asia than in the US at least. Some beauty how-to's just include the "necessary" step of using eyelid glue, tape, or fabric string to make the lid. Ironically, most girls I know who got their eyes done do it to "fit in" with other Asians...because almost all girls will fake it if they don't have it. So, I see where Strawberry is going re: the makeup.



Anyway, this is why Riho's look really stands out to me. It makes her seem very very young and "pure" I guess. I really hope they don't change her eyes and maybe she'll take a position on her eyes being unique but, in all likelihood she'll be pressured into making a fake fold by the time they start putting more makeup on them/dying hair/etc.

I understand all of this and how beauty standards work. There are many similar examples around the world of a lack of resources for a less popular look that don't involve a surgical or otherwise arduous or possibly painful solution. I certainly understand Strawberry's frustration - most girls have something about their look that they dislike and have a hard time working with. But beauty standards can be very emotionally and physically damaging to people; my underlying sentiment was more that being born outside of them is not a terrible horrible thing. The thing with makeup is, you can read tutorials and lessons all day, but unless the model looks just like you, you're bound to need some variations to get the look you want. That's what I mean by there is no "standard" or base, main way to do make-up. Magazines may push a particular style, but it's rarely going to work for everyone and it's unfortunate to see people feeling bad about themselves because of that.



Also Riho is very adorable and pretty and awesome but looks very different in this PV, possibly because of hair styling. Her face and lips seem bigger? I am going crazy?

Sorry to derail this a bit, but there is not a "conventional" way to do makeup. No, a person with monolids can't apply makeup the same way a double-lidded person would and get the same look, but that's why makeup artists stay in business! There are many different types of facial features to work with, and a talented makeup artist can create any look on any type of face. I know it's not that severe at all.... but I'm probably really just sensitive about it because:

I'm the only daughter, yet I am the only one with monolids. All the girls in the rest of my family are also not monolid. And they all started wearing makeup and looking super pretty in their teens, me on the other hand.. Another thing, I don't know if this is one of those messed up Asian things or messed up in general, but as a kid, my dad regularly encouraged me to get surgery when I was older. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hatthe.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whatthe:' /> As a girl growing up, I'm sure you had the time when your mom or someone older helped you with your makeup. All the times I've done it, it ended terribly. I also have a lazy eye. God, my sister-in-law was like, "There's something wrong with the shape of this eye. @ berry: I totally get where you're coming from, but it sounds to me like there's a complex set of issues at play to make a girl target her eyelids as some sort of great defect just because she can't apply makeup a certain way, but that'd be obvious and tedious to discuss, so moving on - I'd be curious to know if other Asian women feel the same way because of similar family and societal pressures or if it's just... pressure-less conformity? I don't know what you'd call that, but it makes me think of teeth in the U.S. and how the majority of people here get their teeth straightened, but not having straight teeth is not some immediate beauty defect.

Sounds like it's live for the most part, though. Risa's got some obvious backtrack going on because of the autotune.

Thanks for the link. Takahashi is so much better than everyone - I don't know what they'll do when she leaves. Risa is really good here too - much more of an impact than Tanaka, imo. I like hearing them sing live lately - it seems to elevate them above being a mere idol group, you know what I mean?
