So, was Maki inside the house or was she on the phone with her?
I think since she found her it would make more sense that she was in the house with her, because I'm sure someone else would've probably found her first if she was just on the phone and had to travel to the house.

My verbal reaction - "Holy sh*t! What the hell happened?!"
This is heartbreaking, utterly and competely heartbreaking. Goto was always one of my favorites, even through her follies, and I can't imagine how it must feel to lose your mother like that. Hearing the thud, seeing her first... My heart goes out to her.
I know that you have to be in a terrible mental turmoil to attempt suicide but would Maki's mother have thrown herself out of a window with her daughter(s) in the house knowing that she would probably find her or at least have to see her? Additionally throwing yourself out of a third storey window doesn't seem to be a very certain way of killing yourself, you could just as easily spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair.
It seems like you're suggesting, then, that this is an accident. I would surely hope so, although it doesn't change the fact that she has passed away.
Last week, I heard that a friend of a friend found both of his parents dead at home from carbon monoxide poisoning. The idea of a child having to discover the bodies of the parents....is really awful. I can't think of another word. It is just so sad. Reading about Maki reminded me of this and it hit a little too close to home.

Jesus Christ, Maki has endured quite a bit in her short life.

That is what I meant, sorry if it wasn't clear. I just find it very difficult to picture a loving mother ending her own life in this manner knowing that Maki or her other daughters would be the most likely to find her and then have to live with that image for the rest of their lives.
Generalising wildly, most suicides seem to either a genuine attempt or a cry for help, throwing yourself out of a third storey window implies it wasn't the latter therefore it was either a genuine attempt or a tragic accident. For the sake of Maki and her sisters I hope it is the latter. I am not suggesting that it isn't suicide, it is just, if all the reports are correct, the method. As you say whatever it turns out to be it doesn't make it anything less than dreadful and I can only wish them the strength to deal with the tragedy.
Sadly I would guess that Maki's fame will mean it will receive the usual ghoulish coverage in the tabloid press as I would guess the Japanese tabloids are no better than those in the UK.

Shinichi Osawa tweeted for Maki's mom. Not wholey on topic, but interesting nonetheless. I wonder how far and wide the news is spreading...

I always got the impression that the suicidal did not care enough? ie: if you want to end your life, it means you have already prioritized your sorrows and suffering over the love and responsibility you feel towards, for example, your children. It makes me sad to speculate though one way or the other. RIP.

I just watched a news clip about the funeral service. Maki looks like she's just barely holding on. It was nice to see how many former members were there to support her, though. Nearly all the "Perfect Ten" were there.

My thoughts exactly, the poor girl looked distraught and then to be expected to stop in front of the photographers, however briefly, must have been torture and then to replay it several times on the News including slow motion to make sure you missed nothing....

Re: Maki Goto's mom has killed herself
Reasons why I doubt the possiblity of suicide.
1. Generally people don't try suicide from 3rd floor.
2. She was pleasantly drinking for more than 4 hours with former driver of Maki.
She was totally fine before her death.

You obviously haven't seen anything that's on Entertainment Tonight, The Insider, Extra, and Access Hollywood. When there's a death, they bring in everyone and their mom to give their side of the story. .____. That and they talk about it for the next two months, speculating and exploiting the death till they've milked it dry. Ugh...
This is a really depressing matter. They're interviewing the bar lady, showing the blood stains on the floor, where her body hit the side of the building, and turned it into a rare opportunity to see former Morning Musume members in public together. Then, they had to go an play a track from the One Litre of Tears OST while describing the tragedies surrounding Maki's life. At least it'll only be for today. These stories in Japan don't last very long, do they?

No, I choose not to watch those shows for the same reason. I don't know why people try to hard to witness grief in such an exploitative way and get all snarky and judgmental about it. Who cares if Yuki went to jail? I feel like the press is dancing around trying to slander her as some sleazy, boozed up widow when in fact, this could have all been a stupid sad accident. It makes me feel very weird watching and reading about it too, because it implicates me as a willing participant in this media circus, you know?

Dammit. Kei wrote a really nice post in her blog about her relationship with Maki and included the lyrics to I Wish to cheer her up. Now my eyes are watering up like a six year old girl with a skinned knee. Miki also had a touching post about the situation.

Here's a 20 minute long news report about the whole thing.
Part One show the service and has interviews with Tsunku, Yuko, Kaori and Yossie. It's pretty touching and shows just how much support she has. Yuko's message to her is really nice.
Part Two starts off with what led up to the death and is basically tabloid reporting up until the 4:30 part, then returns to the service and has the newscasters' views on the event.

Wow. That's intense. It does help me, though, to see the other girls showing up to mourn and support Maki.
If anyone does any translations of what's said in the interviews, please let us know.
First question: why no photos of Maki's mom in the entire report? One mourner holds a photo. But the camera never shows it to us. I wanted to see what she looked like.
Second question: who's the old woman at the restaurant being interviewed?

The old woman owns the bar that her mom frequented and was drinking at the night it happened.
If you go to http://www.hello-online.org/index.php the article about it has a picture of her mother right on the first page.

Poor thing, I hope her and her family will be okay. It's not easy to lose a close loved one -- mother especially. I only wish her a quick and peaceful mental recovery.
Can anyone give me the gist of what Maki's message was on this clip at 5:38 to 6:09? I understand a bit -- thank you very, very much for your support and kindness at the end... But not the beginning. Thanks in advance.

Re: Maki Goto's mom has killed herself
It was nice to see Tsunku and most of the older girls there, too, though I can't help but wonder whether or not all of them being there is part of what caused this media circus. Why did they hold this thing in such a public place, and why was there no security to hold these people away? Or is that against some tradition of respect in Japan to push away papparazi? Or was this a welcomed publicity act for Maki?
Also, the whole thing just keeps bothering me to the core about how someone could fall out of a window when not on purpose, unless its a window that is as tall as a person and reaches all the way to the floor, I just don't get it. Even being a little drunk and all, that would still be a long shot. I'm not trying to suggest she committed suicide or anything, it just seems beyond silly to me that someone could fall out of a window.

Re: Maki Goto's mom has killed herself
To be fair, Japanese buildings follow no logic. My house in Japan had a full-sized sliding window, like a patio door, in the bedroom on the second floor that opened directly to a six inch ledge that supported the second floor air-conditioning unit, with no railing whatsoever, leading to a 20 foot drop straight down onto an asphalt road.
