I hate to say it, but Konkon has a better voice than Sayu ever will. And in actuality, listening to Sayu in older songs, she sounds better back then than she does now. Her voice doesn't crack or anything. It's almost as if someone told her to start sucking.
Ya got something there. Sayumi didn't sound so bad in those Otome Gumi songs way back when (2003--7 years ago). She sounds bad now. ('course she's hotter than hell now, hotter even than Rika ever was, so it compensates.)

I love Konno. I can't even explain why. Those big eyes...that genuine smile...that needy look...that sense of trying harder than everybody else to be almost as good...whatever. But I always have. I dug her in Ongaku Gatas as well. She's starting to get beautiful.

But then I love all of 5th Gen and I have since first laying eyes on them in the concert in which I first saw all of them together (Love is Alive, Spring 2002). It took longer for me to realize just how awesome 4th Gen was and how integral they were to my continuing love for the group. But, to me, that golden year from late 2001 to Sept. 23, 2002, when 3rd Gen, 4th Gen and 5th Gen were all still in MM remains magical. The single best year in MM history. But then Maki graduated and soon 6th Gen joined. Still awesome, but...not magical. Of 6th Gen, Miki was the only one whose value to the group was obvious from the start. The other three took years to develop into solid assets. 5th Gen took much less time than that.

I think it's cute that they had a 5gen event, I'd totally go if I had the opportunity (and it wasn't a bajillion yen). I actually think they'd have more of these for other generations if they were more...together. The 6gen (minus Miki) actually did have an event like this recently, but they're still in MM so it has less of a reunion feel. I do think some of the 1st and 2nd gen members have had events together before, but they were mixed up.

I think it would be weirder for the 4th gen to do an event at this point. Kago getting kicked out and Tsuji having babies really seemed to split them up as a generation. Tsuji is usually off doing her gal mama/tarento thing as a stand alone act, while Yossi and Rika pretty much are still connected to the music side of the idol business through Hangry & Angry, MC's, etc. Even though they're all still in the same agency, it almost feels like Tsuji is a lot more disconnected from H!P/UFA while Yossi and Rika are still kind of tied in. I don't know if that makes any sense.

But the fifth gen as a whole feels a lot more tied together. I can't really explain why, maybe it's just because two of them are still in MM and the other two aren't doing a ton that really makes them seem independant of their fellow H!P/UFA idols (in the way that Mari and Tsuji have huge stand-alone variety presence).

It's kind of nice that the fifth gen is still relatively united. While it's great that some of the girls have been able to make a huge career for themselves after MM and H!P, I kind of miss the days when MM grads were still active within H!P and there was more ineraction and the idea of MM generations seemed to mean more.

Madara, you just named all the reasons why I can't stand her.

5th gen does have its own little cohesiveness that was nice to see. SayuNii lists a bunch of other solo dinner events but, a joint 5 gen show makes a lot of sense in one way. I agree with Madara in that, my favorite years of MM actually fall when 5th gen JUST joined. It was interesting to see such a uniform unit of similarly-aged girls all join together.

But my complaint is...did 5th gen become anything more than just Takahashi + 3 less talented girls that didn't get a chance to stand out? Aside from my dislike of Konno, I just don't like how Makoto and Konno are just picked up like this for an event when they were already under-utilized while they were in the group, and especially since Takahashi and Risa's tenures in the group have been stretched thin. Has this happened with other graduated girls? No, right? It would be like a 2nd gen "reunion" with the much more successful Mari, the since vanished Kei, and like Sayaka who only recently slunk back into show business and has a totally different vibe. It just seems weird in a lot of ways. If you graduate, then go do something else!

Anyway, you know what would be cool to see? A first generation reunion! But I guess that isn't possible since Fukuda ran away from show business forever. It would also be fun to get a Mama group of Aya, Tsuji, and Sayaka though.

It's different with the 5gen though, because they're all still in UFA. With all of the other generations, at least one member has left UFA entirely. Plus these dinner shows are super small events for super enthusiastic fans as it is. They're expensive, fanclub exclusive, and short. It doesn't much matter that the members participating may be less well known, since this type of event appeals to the more hardcore of fans. It's not like a big concert tour or something, that I could see as weird (but I'd totally want to go 8o ).
Hah, the thing with the poll and Eri makes me think about when Sailor Mercury was like the top ranked anime girl in Japan for almost a decade because she was just so damn unassuming and unoffensive.
How come no one came to defend Eri?

To me, Eri is really cuteee, but she doesn't show it off or try to. And Eri was the most shy girl ever before. The thing that I am trying to say, is that this is her appeal to me. Probably because I am also incredibly shy. It feels encouraging seeing her change from scared-hiding-in-her-shell turtle to I'll-pop-my-head-out-now-and-dance-and-scratch-myself turtle.

Remember guys? She used to hide in small areas when she got nervous?! Like the corner of the room with her face towards the wall. And she joined MM in the first place to get over her fears because she couldn't even do her school reports. Look at her perform now, she looks so confident and like she is genuinely enjoying it.

Risa looks just like the lovely Horikita Maki in that photo. I suddenly like her much more.

I need to leave this thread alone.

When I go away, why do I always miss the crazy threads? D: Not fair!

Makoto's always had this weird creepy wide face, kinda like Kei's but minus the intense bug eyed stare. How's that English thing working out for her?

It amazes me how much I use to LOVE Konno but now I barely even remember she's alive half the time.

And Ishikawa worries about the size of her chin....
