Warota is wonderful! It's got Rabutan!!!!!! And Harugon!! And Mayuyu! But most of all Rabutan! They're so adorable~

My favorite AKB songs are Ponytail to Shushu and Heavy Rotation, but my favorite stage songs are the songs like Nagisa no Cherry, Bird, Kuroi Tenshi, Tsundere, and the B songs like Wasshoi B, Team B Oshi, and Candy.

I don't know many stage songs though~

Neither do I, but I had an AKB48 fan as a friend who insisted I watch B5 and I saw bits and pieces of an older concert that had Kimi wa Pegasus in it.

The songs I have downloaded are all the ones I like enough to listen to more than once I guess:

River, Beginner, BINGO!, Romance Irane, Ai no Stripper (SHUT UP), Hatsukoi yo Konnichiwa (Oku was pure gold even if she only got two solo lines), Mushi no Ballad, ALIVE, Maria, Kimi wa Pegasus, Heavy Rotation, Seifuku ga Jama wo Suru (I don't know why I have this don't ask).

I haven't really liked anything else enough to listen more than once.

oh and PKyu, you should check out their new album, there's a lot of songs that are different from their usual stuff that it seems like you would like, maybe.

I hate the single but I love Hito no Chikara and Korekara Wonderland. If they released more singles like those two I might pay attention more. I really love Hito no Chikara. Maybe that's why I like Watarirouka Hashiritai so much? Who knows. I'm weird.
HOW CAN YOU LIKE THEM?! They're so high pitched! . Mayuyu is adorable though...AKB's cyborg :D.
I agree their voices are meh, but I like the songs Akimoto gives to them. I especially liked Valentine Kiss, not just because it was a cover but because of Cyborg's solo. I like when Akimoto gets in touch with his past. Image It was an awesome past.

I like AKB music, just I wont invest any of my time or effort into learning the names of any of the members that aren't being shoved into my face 24/7. (A.K.A Takahashi Crazy Face, Cyborg, Namie Tsuji, Dumbo and that SKE girl that it's the AKB songs. *And don't correct me, I know their real names.) I even pre-ordered their upcoming album, Limited Edition too. But yeah, I already have one group I'm invested in, and no time for another. Sorry 48! :<

All of the Under/Theater girls are so inaccessible I wouldn't really bother learning their names either.

Also, since I'm assuming all 48 stuff goes in here, NMB are gonna release a single "Zetsumetsu Kurokami Shoujo" on July 20th and promise to wear bloomers if they don't get number 1 on Weekly. And they've been promised some rewards by comedians if they do get number 1.

"With regards to their debut single, “Zetsumetsu Kurokami Shoujo” was written by Akimoto Yasushi and composed by Iida Takehiko. It sings of girls’ black hair."

^Wow they're getting a single already? I don't follow NMB at all. I only follow SKE a bit because I really like some of the members and they have great songs.

It's ironic because 'zetsumetsu' was one of my kanji vocab today at Japanese school.

"Extinct Black haired girls"

Pfff, probably half of NMB will have their hair dyed as soon as they graduate.

Well they have been performing old Team A stuff for over half a year now. I'm just wondering if it's going to be like SKE48's senbatsu with the two everyone knows with some backup girls.

^Most likely. But it's not really back up girls, more of who management wants to push. Yamamoto Sayaka, Watanabe Miyuki, and Yamada Nana will definitely be in it. Those are the only 3 NMB girls I know because they were in AKB's last single, and Nana is ex H!P Kansai.

Or it might be all of Team N, like SKE debuted with all of Team S for their first single. Apparently if they don't rank #1 on oricon, they have to perform a show in bloomers.

I'm excited for NNB48's new single, I like hearing different groups that I haven't seen before. I've only seen them perform "NMB48" at AX2011 or something. I hope that maybe they'll return to the old 48 roots and have a dark sounding song. Please, Aki-P!

Ooh we can say our favorite theater songs now? I love Kimi wa Pegasus, Blue Rose, Oshibe to Meshibe to Yoru no Chouchou, Arashi no Yoru ni wa, and so many others. Itoshisa no Excel is pretty brilliant too. I think getting to know the theater girls is good because a lot of them have real talent! Chikano Rina, Nonaka Misato <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/wub.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> are my favorite theater girls.

Radio rip of NMB48's b-side

The actual song is cute, but their voices as a whole are pretty nasally so I can't say I'm feeling their actual vocals.

I can't really say I'm surprised, and it would explain why most of them haven't really shown any improvement. I understand that being 'average' and 'normal' is supposed to be the 48 franchise's thing, but you think there would be some effort to improve. I've seen some girls mention voice training on their blog, so is that something they're personally investing in?

Edit: not even the research students? What exactly do they train them in?

Vocal training? That costs extra money! Are you insane!!?

They only get basic idol training 101 (how to be a proper idol in front of and behind the camera) and dancing I'm sure.

Are they singing with an accent? I heard that was their thing but I can't tell because of the quality.

The girls with Avex do actually get vocal training. So everyone in DiVA and French Kiss get it.

Most of the girls that have been with the group a while have improved, like Miichan for example. But there's only so much you can do on your own. I'm sure some of them pay for lessons elsewhere.

I vaguely recall a Team A girl mentioning on her blog she was taking vocal lessons. I forget who it was, but it wasn't a senbatsu girl.

Team 4. I was hoping for a name change to AKB448, and possibly them announcing they're going to add about 400 more girls but sadly, team 4 is covered in the name already.

Image

They have Fresh Lemon, which makes them instantly better than the other teams. Obviously I'm going to have to start paying a little more attention to AKB48. It'd be easier if their sub team wasn't busy subbing old stuff from 2008 and 2009.

Sorry, I'm not part of any ongoing discussion here. Just wanted to note some observations. So, I input AKB48 on my nonstop youtube player. I'm a total AKB novice so I figured it was a good way to get a random sampling. I had 2 main impressions....

1. AKB's "sexy" PVs are by % very few but they get the most attention.

The first 3 PVs are Heavy Rotation, Babyx3, Ponytail Shushu. Imagine my first impression, right. All 3 are over the top sexual, not just because bikinis/underwear is the primary costume or that their school uniform scenes are filmed in a way to get the most panty shots possible . So, I think "ahh, this is why people hate AKB." I recall the controversy over Heavy Rotation but also heard a lot about Ponytail because it was "one of their best songs." So obviously at this point, I want to just turn it all off.

BUT THEN

Majisukak Rock and Roll is the most amazing, hilarious video ever.

Namida Surprise was also pretty cute and fun. Who is that actor again? I loved him in dramas and he's hot.

Vegetable Stars? Wtf adorable.

etc

BUT THEN!!I noticed that the first 3 PVs kept repeating on my playlist, which suggests that those sexy PVs are the ones that get the most play/etc. So in a way, being overtly slutty is both an unfair stereotype of AKB but also their claim to fame for some of their fan population. Or, both the complaint that AKB is "slutty" AND the defense that they "aren't at all" are both wrong.

2. THEIR PVS ARE AMAZING.

Even the other ones that were less interesting (Oogoe diamond, Iiwake Maybe, Beginner, Bingo, Kimi no koto ga sukidakara, 10-nen sakura) had amazing, amazing production quality. Each video had a mini-movie opening and was not always about showing the girls as cutesy ditsy idols.

The high quality of PV distracted me from paying attention to the actual song. Is this a company tactic? I liked Heavy Rotation (the song) but can't remember any of the others because I was so busy watching.

I also saw a Dear J Solo, which was really odd. She has a pretty subpar stage presence and voice but it doesn't really matter because, damn is she pretty. She is less an "idol" than a gal-ish pop star.

You should also check out Aitakatta.

It's the first AKB song I heard (and liked). Though it might seem "antiquated" by today's standards.

Baby!x3 is such a boring song and the girls jumping around in bikinis doesn't really make it any more worthwhile imho. The sound has such a dull old-J-pop, which I hate, feeling to it.

Heavy Rotation however has an extremely catchy tune and of course the music video is quite sexy.

I think the beginning of Ponytail Shushu is actually making fun of this sexy image.

You've realized the brilliance of AKB's PV's!!!

You need to watch their new ones! They are so colorful and cute! I wish H!P had wonderful PV's like AKB....even AKB subunits have better PV's than H!P does. Acchan's PV for her new solo song is just so amazing, and Tomochin is wonderful.

Kore Kara Wonderland

Hito no Chikara

Flower

↑↑If you ever need some new PV's too loop

HebiRote is actually my favorite song. The PV totally turned me off at first, but then I kept listening to just the mp3, and I realized how much I loved it. Then I tried watching the PV again...but I was just like...too much underwear. But I still love the song. In my opinion AKB don't choose to wear those outfits, they are made to, so it's not like you can really call them sluts. And PonyShu is the first song I listened to that turned me from a casual fan, to a big fan, well that and going to their concert.

Also, despite having too many goddamn members, the PVs heavily feature the same 5 or 6 girls that I can easily recognize. The poor man's Maki Horikita seems to be the main super star. Then the pretty Gal one, the other Takahashi, one that has really amazing long hair, one that is your standard "cute" one with half pig-tails, and a super tall one that has short hair and looks more like a fashion model (I saw her in an interview with Maki recently). None of the other girls stand out at all yet.

So I am relooping the AKB stuff but this time, sound only so I can judge if I like the music

Heavy Rotation is definitely the most catchy so far.

Agree with Ap on Babyx3. It is boring without all the bikinis

The poor man's Maki Horikita seems to be the main super star: Maeda Atsuko. Acchan. She is AKB's ace. She is the face of AKB. My 5th favorite.

Then the pretty Gal one: Itano Tomomi. Tomochin. Popular with girls, and is actually really nice despite her bitchy vibes. AKB's fashion leader.

the other Takahashi: Takahashi Minami. Takamina. The father of AKB. The captain of Team A, and considered the leader of all of AKB. She is known for her suberi talk, and everyone calls her a man. She's really funny and awesome. Always wears a ribbon, and is known for owning over 200 ribbons at her house. (My 3rd oshi)

one that has really amazing long hair: Hmmm....I;m guessing this is Kojiharu. Kojima Haruna. Another nickname is Nyannyan. She is a my-paced idol and doesn't always pay attention. Also likes H!P and used to want to be in MM.

one that is your standard "cute" one with half pig-tails: Watanabe Mayu. Mayuyu. Team B's ace. Called the cyborg idol. She is also an otaku.

a super tall one that has short hair and looks more like a fashion model: Shinoda Mariko. Mariko-sama. The oldest in all of AKB. Also very popular with girls.

Other popular girls you will see everywhere are...

Oshima Yuko, she was #1 is last years ranking, the center for HebiRote. She is loud and energetic. Also known for liking to touch other idols (My other oshi)

(Together her and Mayu are the "oshiri sisters" ["butt sisters"])

Kashiwagi Yuki. Yukirin. Team B's captain. Known as a Black (black-hearted). Weather girl. Known for being really good with fans. And she also really like idols, and really like H!P.

Matsui Jurina. From SKE48. First SKE member in AKB singles. Center in Oogoe Diamond.

and then you should just know

Sashihara Rino. Sasshi, Sashiko. She is quickly rising to popularity. She has her own TV as well. She went from #19 in the last senbatsu to #7 in the preliminaries for this years senbatsu (Which is happening tonight). She's also a wota. also likes H!P. My other 5th favorite.

Minegishi Minami. Miichan. Because she is pure awesome and one of my oshi's. She has really long hair like Kojiharu too, and is always in senbatsu. She often talks during their TV performances. Her, Kojiharu, and Takamina, have a subunit called no3b (aka No Sleeves).http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okNvDUJJcRM

...it's kind of weird how much I know about them probably. It just...sticks without me trying. But then again, I can do this for anyone of my friends at school, or family members, or even teachers, or even Disney Channel people or idols I hate so...

It may seem like a lot of members (well it is), but they're actually pretty easy to learn, they've all got their distinct characters. And if you were to learn the members of each AKB subgroup (there are 5, each with 3-5 members) you would already know half of AKB.

I googled and yes, those are the 6 girls I'm talking about. Of those 6, Watanabe Mayu has a kind of generic look and I can only pick her out by her hair style. The same for the rising girls that you just listed below - I have no memory of them in any PV and can't recall their faces 5 min later. So yeah, I'd have to see them on TV to get some ways to differentiate them. (Actually, Minegishi Minami stands out a little via google pictures because she looks like a Cabbage Patch Doll.) That's my only real complaint so far (everyone in the background looks the same) but that applies to Morning Musume too.

Actually, my 2nd complaint is, I wish Tomomi would stop with the duck lips in photos. She's ruining her pretty looks by making herself look dumb

No, those are actually Tomochin's natural lips. She is also known as the geinojin withe the best duck lips too~

http://www.tokyohive.com/2010/11/akb48s-itano-tomomi-reveals-who-is-the-least-fashionable-member/ Apparently she doesn't like them though. Haha.

(Also there are like 3 Tomomi's in AKB, the other popular one also being in senbatsu known as Tomo~mi or Chiyuu)

(Actually Miichan isn't rising since she's a 1st gen, she's already risen XD, only Sasshi is rising) They are in the PV's. Depends which ones your watching though, because while Miichan is in all of the A-side PV's (B-side is Undergirls), Sasshi isn't.

But yeah, these girls stand out a lot, but you kind of have to watch them in action, like a live performance MC, or on a variety show to see it more.

If your just feeling bored one day you should check out Sashihara PRIDE or Sashiko no Kuse ni for Sasshi. And Miichan, any ep of AKBINGO! that she is featured prominently on, or a no3b MC. You can find it on YT, but you'll have to type it in JP.

no3b MC

Clip from Sashiko no Kuse ni well the whole entire thing is funny, but this clip might not make sense out of context.

eri, you must have just written the most informed, neutral and objective post about AKB on the Internets, ever. I'm glad you were able to see and hear past the many layers of bs surrounding it. It took me a while to warm up to them too, but there's a growing number of their songs in the prominent spot of my playlist. As far as the members go, I don't really bother trying to wrap my head around it... I only really recognize 3 of them, Moeno who's a lovely girl who reads and shows fan letters on her blog, the Duckface soloist whose smug face I always want to kick hard, and Rinatin who's, well, Rinatin. Oh, and then there's the leader girl who's name I always forget, but she seems nice too. The 90% of what really throws me off of AKB is not the many instances of the too obvious sexualization or innuendo, not their alleged scandals or dirty secrets, but the crowd of their utter fucktard western fans. If I couldn't see how damaging wotas were to the MM's image in Japan due to being stuck in a naive MM fan la-la-land, then this example has made realise it with sheer and destructive force. Thankfully, it's not about the fans, but about the music, so one just need to learn to ignore that sad aspect.

You hit the nail on the head! Many of their PVs are true little gems and works of art. I said it before, but I really wish that all of the industry took it as an example and learned how to spend their promotion money so well. If you didn't know, their PVs are often directed by big-name indie/arthouse movie directors, such as Shunji Iwai, Mika Ninagawa, or Hirokazu Koreeda. For a fan of indie/arthouse movies like me this is really as awesome as it gets.

Others are better at recommending songs and more informed in the line-up matters so I'm not gonna pretend that I know much about it. But thank you for that post, and enjoy.

I have seen so many creepy and gross comments from western fans....

I like AKB because I admire them, but some fans really scare with what disgusting or creepy things they are thinking or saying.

If that's what you are talking about...

Which one's did these guys direct? Shunji Iwai's "Hana to Alice" is probably my favorite movie of all time.

Shunji Iwai -> Sakura no shiori

Hirokazu Koreeda -> Sakura no ki ni narou

They also had Katsuyuki Motohiro direct Everyday, kachuusha but I'm confused since what I saw of it it's just a medley of their old PVs. But maybe I just didn't see the right thing. I can't even find it on short notice now since the one the director linked on his official page was taken down by RIAJ.

Here's EbiKachu (Everyday, Kachuusha)

Since this PV is based of their old PV's, a lot of people have made comparison PV's, that's probably what you saw.

No, what we saw is correct, aine. I downloaded it from H!O and it's the same and not that great of a PV.

Also eri, it's songs like these that give AKB a bad rep:

Seifuku Jama wo Suru (Prostitution? Or being with an older guy?)

Skirt, Hirari (Well, lots of panties)

Dear My Teacher (Student and Teacher relationship)

Yeah. And they're my favorite songs of their's too.
