I agree, they seem separate. Even with Yuko and Kago there's always been some girls in the middle to balance out the ages. It's because they waited so long to add girls that this happened. If 8th gen had a girl or 2 that were currently 15-16, it would be better. Or like if all the current 9th gen now were 10th gen, and there was a different 9th gen who got added like in 2009 or something, there would some girls to balance out the ages and kohai-senpai gap, I think it would be better like that.

It might just seem so stark to compare them because you have about half of a new group who aren't in idol makeover mode yet. People are reacting like this is keeping original 5 member MM and having no auditions until they added the 5th gen girls <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/rofl.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Wait, I kind of want to see how this looks.

Current+9th: 86' 88' 89' 89' 93' + 96' 97' 98' 98'

Classic+5th: 73' 78' 81' 81' 84' + 86' 87' 87' 88'

even..

Classic+6th: 73' 78' 81' 81' 84' + 85' 88' 89' 89'

What is the point?

Is the big gap because they got rid of Eri, JunJun & LinLin in one swipe? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... dammit.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' />

No, there's still a slight gap because the missing girls are older than Aika.

86' 88' 88' 88' 89' 89' 91' 93' + 96' 97' 98' 98'

Note that the Aika to Mizuki age gap is smaller than the gap between Reina & Aika, but it's no big deal when it's only 2 people.

I think the reason they seem more separate than usual is simply because there hasn't been anyone new JunJun and LinLin back in 07. It's a much larger gap than anyone is used to.

What do you mean by gap? The age difference between Yuko and members like Asuka, Maki, Kago and Tsuji was bigger than the one between Ai and the new girls. Yuko has 15 years on Kago.

[/quote]

Yeah, but there were enough ages repped in between Yuko and Kago that it didn't seem to make much of a difference in the group's overall style. There were enough disparate personalities in the group in 2000 and 2001 that there were no obvious breaks into clearly marked groupings, esp. after 4th Gen began to assert themselves and managed to have an impact on the others' performing styles. (Just compare Mari's style pre-4th Gen and then after they joined.) Today, the gap is as much one of style as of age. The four new girls look very different from the other five and their boundless youthful energy gives off a very different vibe. Just look at one of the pictures in the banner and you'll see it. This can all be changed, of course, with staging, choreography, costuming, hairstyles and makeup. But do we want that changed? Do we want the new girls toned down in deference to the older girls? Or, conversely, do we want the older girls suddenly forced to go all "genki" on us to match the styles of the younger girls? Sayumi could pull it off, but I'm not sure about the others. I like the gravitas of the older girls, yet at the same time, I want the group to change. I think they've been stuck in a certain groove for the past couple of years and I want to see them do something different. Morning Musume, surprise me!

I've noticed the separation too, but I think we just need to give the group some more time. You mention Mari's personality changing with the influence of the 4th gen, but that didn't happen overnight.

I think right now the reason the 9th gen feels so separate is because they're new. They're being promoted right now, so they of course get extra spotlight on them that separates them from the rest of the group. This of course happens with all new generations, but the ratio of old to new in MM makes this seem more like two separate groups.

Addition of the 6th gen: 11 old girls, 3 new girls, 1 semi-new girl

Addition of the 7th gen: 9 old girls, 1 new girl

Addition of the 8th gen: 8 old girls, 1 new girl

Addition of the 8.5 gen: 8 old girls, 1 semi-new girl, 2 new girls (with little to no spotlight on new girls)

Addition of the 9th gen: 5 old girls, 4 new girls

It's almost the same number of old girls as new girls now, which makes it feel more like units. I think they just need more time for the new girls to get integrated and for UFA to promote the group as a whole rather than focusing on what's new and shiney.

So this basically happened because 7th and 8th gen were so small/short lived.

If they brought in a few others during Koharu's time just went with the poor unlucky 7 girls instead, it might have been a smoother transition to 9th gen's age range.

It will be an even split when Takahashi leaves. I'm curious to see how(if) that is handled in their new singles. I suggest double A-sides.

The song fits Kanon's voice pretty well but you can tell she's yelling but she doesn't sound bad to me anyway until the end when you can tell she's running out of breath. I haven't heard Sukiyaki in awhile, I'm glad they dug it out.

Guru Guru Jump will never be my favorite song. But the wota seem to cover up the song so I can't hear Erina very well. She all over the place when I can hear her and she doesn't sound good.

Mizuki finally proves herself, a floundering fish has more appeal then her, but she's got one of the better voices in the 9th gen. She's my candidate for the new Eri of the group.

And the new Reina? Well that's Riho, she even cements this fact by picking one of Reina's songs. Of course she doesn't sound anything like Reina but after Mizuki she's got one of the better voices.

As for the other's, LOL for Aika picking a Coconuts Musume song. She doesn't sound bad either, she's doing the cutesy voice which is mildly disturbing coming from Aika, but whatever doesn't make her voice crack off key is fine by me.

No big surprise Sayumi picked Yowamushi. I always associate Shanimuni Paradise with Reina and not Risa, but whatever. Meh!

Reina picked a good song for her voice, so I have no complaints. Takahashi is flawless as always and props for picking an old shuffle song.

Of the 9th gen performances:

Riho gave a very forceful performance of Shabondama, she still sounds like a kid, but I'm guessing she will become the vocal ace of the group. The next Tanaka Reina, so this song is approrpriate for her.

Mizuki gave a solid performance of a difficult song that requires a lot of high notes. She has a good voice, but her voice is a bit like her personality, it lacks passion/vitality. Hopefully that will change as she matures, gains self-confidence.

Kanon was okay, she shouts more than sings at the moment, but I like her voice, which has a lot of power.

Erina still needs work.

All of 9th gen sounded pretty good. Mizuki is definitely better than Riho vocally, but I'm sure Riho probably gave a better performance.

I'm starting to like Aika less and less with everything she does. I absolutely hate that cutesy voice she does it brings her down so much. She used to be my number one, now she's almost down there with Mizuki to me.

I think everyone gave a pretty solid performance of their solo songs.... except for Erina (she was atrocious, and for Sayu... there's just no hope for her vocals). The setlist, in my opinion, was pretty amazing and it was nice to hear the girls sing songs that were suited to their own voices/personalities.

For 9th gen... I'd say from best to worst:

-Mizuki

-Riho

-Kanon

-Erina. Poor girl doesn't have a chance.

Indeed, subs aren't even needed.

EDIT:

But for those who still want to know, Kanon is asking Riho to make a weird face (変顔) to the camera.

That's a pretty bad quality... so imho it shouldn't be used to judge her singing either in a good or bad way.

Well her tune is perfectly fine.

She certainly needs to work on the body of her voice as it's very throat based, but we saw in the recording for maji desu ka suka that she struggles to push out the high notes, she'll get better if she works on singing more from the disphragm.

It's actually a very common problem for people to sing from the throat, as I said if she works on it she can do it as she is a great singer but she can be a lot better.

If you think she's out of tune then you need to re-tune your ears mate.

Kanon is the only one i feel can improve significally, along with Mizuki who's already pretty good.

Celine Dion and Riho are on two very, very, very, very different levels, though. Riho doesn't have that kind of undeniable singing ability.

Riho wasn't out of tune, and her voice is developing quite nicely. I was a little concerned about her voice at the beginning, but I think she's definitely developing into the ace of 9th generation. Easily the most talented member to hit the group since 2003.

Mizuki was less impressive, her voice was pretty wobbly in the mic rip I heard. But hopefully she will improve.
