The audition person didn't seem better to me. Her tone is too high pitched and it strained my ears.

Also, REPLAYS WHILE SOMEBODY SINGS !? It never ceased to amaze me how annoying the editors of Korean shows are.

I was expecting something cutsy with a name like Flower Power, so I'm pleasantly surprised. It's the same uninspired technopop the industry's been spitting out for years now, but I'll take that over the Nicki Minaj off-her-meds technopop I'm forced to listen to otherwise if I wanna dabble in mainstream stuff.

SNSD's second Japanese album is out.



For me the standout tracks are I'm a Diamond, Reflection, and Stay Girls. Stay Girls in particular appeals to me because it looks back on the sense of youthful optimism, idealism, and indomitability that I thought Into the New World was about, based on its video (until I recently made the mistake of looking at a translation of the lyrics -- something I had studiously avoided for fear of precisely the disillusionment that I experienced). The originally leaked K-version of Boomerang was harder-hitting than the J-version on offer here, but it's listenable, as is Not Alone. Rounding out the new tracks are Animal [meh], Girls & Peace [meh-], and T.O.P. [not to my taste at all].



So... fewer good tracks than the first album, but the good ones are really good.

I feel so bad for them, having to try and find a way to make this ATROCIOUS choreography look even halfway decent. Seriously, Flower Power has some of the shittiest choreography I have ever seen. Even the formations are a train wreck.

Their next album will (finally, again) be a Korean one, called "I Got A Boy" (who's going to leave in 9 months ?).

Pretty cheap to just make a cover after having been absent from the Korean market for so long (at least in terms of mainly promoting a song in Korea). According to Taeyeonism.com the stuff for the video was mainly shot during the GEE era. Weird.

Based on the second teaser, I am tentatively optimistic. The song itself doesn't sound like the Genie 2.0 that I would like, but I could deal with some good, energetic choreography for once. They aren't wearing heels [strike]if we ignore the huge insoles[/strike], which I take as a very good sign.

I Got a Boy MV

This is literally the worst song I have ever heard. Taeyeon looks like a rat, Yoona looks like an alligator, Yuri looks like a man. There is nothing redeeming about this, all I can do is laugh.

Anyway, this song has reminded me once again of why I am usually a pessimistic person. It wouldn't be nearly as annoying if they got rid of the intro "rap" portion and then spliced the midtempo and uptempo parts into two separate songs. I actually like the midtempo part (0:55-2:00 or so in the MV and the Taeny bridge), but unfortunately I think the uptempo part with the ear-piercing beat is meant to be the "real" song, insofar as that idea has any meaning whatsoever with a mess like this.



EDIT: All the above is written from the perspective of someone who doesn't know a lick of Korean and likes to keep it that way. Supposedly the lyrics are offensively inane, if you can understand them.



EDIT 2: This edited version (not mine) flows a lot more smoothly. Note how it brings in the "Oh, oh oh eh oh" motive relatively quickly after the tempo change to help connect the two halves better.
