Battlestar Galactica

Post by al kusanagi »

So the last of the final 10 episodes started to air this weekend and HOLY CRAP! The show never fails to turn everything on its side and keep people guessing. I'll be sad to see it go but at least it'll get a proper ending and not drag on and on.

There's a whole lot to be spoiled about the recent episode, so I'll hold off until people check it out.

I'm so glad to have this series back. It's sad to see it go, but I agree that it deserves a finite end and to not be drug on forever.

I was a little dissapointed with the last cylon revealed, but I'm kind of holding off judgment until I see where they take it. There were a lot of new twists added last episode, which I love as long as they follow through with explaining all of them.

One of the shows I want to catch up on sometime soon.

After StarGate ended I somehow feel a scifi-series hole in my heart and Andromeda nor StarGate Atlantis can fill it.

But I said this already in the last Battlestar Galactica thread on the old board.

Well fucking hell what an amazing handful of episodes these past few weeks!

"The Oath" has got to be the single best episode since the 3rd season opener (where Galactica did that insanely awesome re-entry jump) or even the Pegasus episodes from season 2. I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire time being amazed at how exciting the whole thing was. I have to take back my previous statement, this was THE best BSG episode, period. The followup "Blood On The Scales" didn't seem as interesting to me, even though some pretty major shit went down. But for some reason "Part 2" episodes always seem to come up a bit short to me, like they always seem to wrap up too quickly or conveniently in the last few minutes, despite essentially being a 2 hour episode.

The most recent ep "No Exit" was great for all the information it relayed, but I thought it was kind of a copout just having Anders tell it to us rather than actually show it being played out. And of course now I'm wondering who this Daniel/Seven is or was, and I'm looking in Baltar's direction, especially considering Cavil's bit about beings appearing to the Five shortly before the approaching doom. I don't think it's Starbuck, my guess is that either she or the body that was in her crashed Viper is a recently created skinjob, but no idea what her purpose is other than "leading humanity to it's doom" or whatever that Hybrid said in "Razor."

God what a geek I am for this show.

I finally got around to watch it and just finished s01e06.

Very interesting indeed, I like how the music has a totally different vibe to it than it just being another generic sci-fi action soundtrack.

But why do they use that horrible sounding word instead of "fuck" !?

It's extremely annoying.

"Frak" also goes back to the original 70's TV series, which was on network television. I don't think they threw it around back then like they do now, but hey it was probably really pushing the envelope then. Of course, the UK was showing actual boobs on TV at the time, which is far more preferable.

You'll get used to the word. You'll probably even go through a phase where you actually say the word now & then. Just be thankful they didn't carry over "felgercarb" as the substitute for "bullshit."

Haha, looks like I spoke too soon, tonight's episode featured Felgercarb Toothpaste, which is pretty damn funny.

And now that I've seen all of tonight's episode ("Someone To Watch Over Me") I really have to wonder what the frak's (see? It's ludicrously easy for this word to hack it's way into your vocabulary!) going on with the filler episodes this late in the game? And back-to-back ones, to boot! I mean really, it takes 46 minutes to tell us that Boomer was sent to kidnap Hera & that Starbuck played All Along The Watchtower as a kid? There are three episodes left in the entire show, EVERY episode should knock the ball out of the park at this point. From the previews & precap, I was seriously expecting to find out exactly WHAT Starbuck is in this episode, instead I'm treated to an unecessarily drawn-out exposition piece that only brings up a new question. It's like the "Maelstrom" episode all over again in terms of payoff.

As for Boomer, well at least we got some awesome body shots. I almost feel sorry for Tyrol, he's achieving Tool status second only to Mohinder Suresh in Heroes. But I'm also pretty sure that if Grace Park asked me to kill my best friend, I'd probably be hard pressed to find a reason not to. And to clarify, no her Raptor didn't crash into Galactica during the escape attempt, it did jump away & the force of the jump so close to the hull is what caused the damage. Boomer & Hera looked very much alive in the preview for next week's show. As did Anders in his Hybrid tank.

Somehow I get the feeling that a little bit more action here and there could make the series better than it is.

I'm really interested in it, but there's just a little more salt and pepper they should have added so far.

However, the ending to season 01, without spoiling anything, was really good.

EDIT:

And why did they take away the previews at the beginning of the episodes ? It kept me guessing when what will happen.

I don't really consider them filler at all. It seems that every little detail is building towards something.

And yes, I too would gladly bring about the Galactica's downfall for a little quality time with Boomer. Plus, Kara boobies.

Holy mother of fuck, was S02E10 an awesome episode.

Best episode in a series I've seen since some of S01/02 of LOST.

on a side-note; eventhough being 22 years older than me, the Pegasus gurl is quite attractive. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/perv.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' />

EDIT:

Ending of episode 11 is even extremer, wonder what's going to happen in #12.

However, because I have to learn a lot until saturday, I kind of can't watch as much as I'd like to.

Anyway, I found this ingenious amazing teaser wallpaper for the last season:

Man oh man I hope you're right, cos "Daybreak Pt.1" was a whooooooooole lot o' nothing happening unless all those flashbacks (or possibly even flashforwards) were there specifically to set up the payoff in Pt.2 next week. Sure I guess you can call all this "characterization", but honestly, do any of the characters NEED that this late in the game? I mean, other than Starbuck, we know all of these characters pretty damn well by now. And you KNOW there's still going to be unanswered questions & loose ends after the series ends, which makes the last 4 episodes' lack of story advancement doubly frustrating. And WTF was with that flashback where Baltar says to Six "I've forgotten your name" and instead of saying it, she just makes out with him to shut him and the audience up? Why even have that in there if you have no intention of revealing the name? Crazy fuckers.

I'm currently at S03E12 and I have to questions of stuff (Cylon and episode-related) that I absolutely don't understand:

1.) Why don't the other cylons know of "the final five" (please don't tell me their names =P) ? How possibly could the NOT know them !?

2.) (about S03E10, which was quite boring actually, but hey, at least one of that annoying characters died) Why did they have to jump through that atomic nebula ? Why was their food/water/whatever suddenly poisoned (contaminated) ? Why no other planet ?

Up until that episode I pretty much understood everything, but these things don't make any sense to me.

Most probably I missed something.

1. This is actually explained in season 4.5 & it turns out one of the other Cylons (other than Deanna of course) DOES know who they are. In fact, this particular Cylon knows all about them AND more, and has been keeping this info to himself/herself all along.

2. You're talking about Kat's death right? GOD I cheered when she bit it, I only wish they'd actually shown the life leaving her eyes to make my victory all that much sweeter. Anyway, if I remember correctly I think they had to go through the nebula because the trip around it would have taken considerably longer than the week or so the food supply was estimated to last. As for the contamination itself, I think it was just the plot device of the week really.

Incidentally, Sci-Fi's running all of season 4.5 this Friday. Then at 7pm they're re-airing The Last Frakkin' Special which was on last night, then Daybreak Pt.1 re-airs at 8pm, followed by the 2-hour finale Daybreak Pt.2 at 9pm. I believe they're also immediately re-airing Daybreak 1 & 2 right after the finale ends. Having heard the finale was really intended to be just a 3-hour "Daybreak", I'm looking forward to watching the whole thing together. Part 1 really had a lot in it that makes zero sense & comes across as a colossal waste of time until you realize that the finale wasn't meant to be split up like Sci-Fi decided to. And judging from their upcoming name change to SyFy, you can imagine the mental giants that make the decisions there.

I have a question about how to watch the rest.

I know that there's the pegasus-centered movie that's been shown before Season 04 started.

However, is there more after Season 4 (all episodes, incl "4,5") ?

I read about "The plan", which will be released this year, but is Season 4 the "final season" ?

Season 4 is indeed the final season, the final episode of which is actually airing at this very moment on the east coast. "The Plan" does come out later this year as you said, but the new series "Caprica" is set to debut in April last I heard.

As for what to watch next, I'd suggest "Razor" (the Pegasus movie,) which was released before season 4 & takes place both before the series began, as well as just before season 4. It's worth watching because it contains a few things of importance that relate to later episodes. There were originally a handful of webisodes leading up to Razor's premiere, I believe these are included in the unrated DVD release, or at least incorporated into the movie itself.

More recently, there was another series of webisodes after season 4.0, called "Face Of The Enemy". This is noteworthy as it serves as kind of a final straw for one of the series regulars, which leads to a pretty significant event in season 4.5. Hopefully the Underworld Rise Of The Lycans embedded commercial is gone now since that movie came & tanked, so watching all 10 in a row should be tolerable.

So it'd go: Razor -> S4.0 -> Face Of The Enemy -> S4.5 -> The Plan.

I'm curious though, what's your opinion of the show? Aside from the 1st season & a half, I've watched new episodes as they aired, but I do seem to enjoy a series more when I can watch several episodes or even seasons one after the other. I'm wondering if your nonstop viewing gave similar or different reactions to episodes in terms of what you thought was great or what you though was awful, compared to my viewings which involved a lot of waiting, especially between seasons.

Of course I like it, otherwise I wouldn't have watched it ! =P

I tend to loose interest in stuff I can't see immediately, however, I'm also watching current Scrubs and LOST Seasons + waiting for The Big Bang Theory and Fringe to end/get a new season.

Biggest impact ?

I think the biggest impact so far were S02's 10-12, those three episodes were so extremely intense, shocking and, well, mindblowing over-all, I even wrote on a different board "Just watched S0E12 and holy fucking shit, haven't seen such extremely awesome written, crafted and directed episodes in a tv show since LOST season 1 & 2".

I also loved the "time jump", it came sudden and I was surprised, but a very cool idea.

I felt that some of the episodes in Season 3 could have ben cut/cut together.

Too bad I spoilered myself something (one of the four "connected" [or whatever] Cylons).

Wow... I really don't think I could have asked for a better finale to the series, even though it did have more false endings than Return of the King. Well, okay, one better ending. But that would have involved me, Grace Park and nekkid time.

Now I'm interested in seeing where exactly The Plan is going to fit in.

I actually watched it twice, since SciFi reran it immediately after Pt. 2 ended, and while I still would've preferred a more definitive answer to the Starbuck & Head character questions, I was really pleased with the finale overall. I certainly didn't expect it to end on such a positive note, and I was really surprised to see pretty much everything either explained or at least touched on enough to satisfy curiosity. I'm really having a hard time thinking of anything bad about the finale, other than it never should've been aired in 2 parts. "Daybreak" works well as a 150-minute movie, but "Daybreak Pt.1" was a disaster as a standalone episode & I was glad to see RDM felt the same way, reluctantly giving in to SciFi's wishes since they gave him another hour's budget on what was scripted as a two hour show.

I'm thinking that Starbuck 2.0 was essentially a Head Starbuck that everyone could see, while Head Six and Baltar were more like ones only the special "prophets" could see. The show pretty much said that they were angels with Starbuck's father/piano guy possibly even being God.

Yeah, as much as I was hoping for a more "Cylon-related" or technical explanation for Starbuck 2.0, I'm actually pretty okay with the idea of her being a full-out angel. But her father just can't be God, South Park revealed Him years ago.

BTW, I was partially wrong about the Caprica premiere. The pilot comes out on DVD (& most likely will air a day or two before like Razor did) in April, but the actual series isn't set to debut until 2010

I watched the last episode last night. Cried my guts out. My god what an amazing show. No TV show has ever affected me this strongly, My boyfriend predicted the early man revelation but it was still insane. I had a dream about Lee talking to Kara, and woke up crying even more, Guh!

SO tempted to go back to the beginning and watch it all again. I want to understand it better and analyze it a bit more.

I was thinking the same thing, so thanks for the heads up. There was so many moments in the last episode where I was thinking "Oh yeah, I totally forgot about ___," which makes me wonder what else I forgot about. Plus I never saw any of the webisodes, so it would be interesting to go back and watch the series and include those where they were supposed to go. I'm also kind of curious about how well things synch up. I hadn't read/watched many interviews until The Last Frakkin' Special, and Ron Moore describing how certain major aspects of the show were decided as they went along makes me want to see how well all of that flows from day one.

I pretty much agree with the response to the finale - the false endings thing was a little annoying, and I wanted a more definitive answer on Starbuck. I'm a little iffy on how I feel about all of the God's Plan stuff (i.e. Head Characters actually being messengers of God and not something more Cylon related). Part of me liked it better when religion failed them and they were stuck with harsh reality and logical explainations, but part of me liked when the series went beyond just "Cylons Plot Things, Humans Get Screwed."

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the Season 4 soundtrack. Gaeta's Lament pleaaaaase. ;_;

edit: Okay, I've been thinking about it more and now I'm confused. When is it that Real Starbuck actually died? She was in a raptor, so does that mean she was a real person up to the time she died in the nebula thing? And if so, how did her body and raptor end up on Earth? Or was she supposed to have died back on original Earth in the nuclear bombing, and her entire life on Caprica was in everyone's head?
