Puzzles.

Post by Melon »

A lot of us seemed to like Layton. So I thought we should do a situational puzzle for fun! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D/' />

For those who have never played situational puzzles, here's the gist:

You ask yes/no questions. You will get yes/no/not applicable/irrelevant answers. Example from wikipedia:
A man walks into a bar, and asks the bartender for a drink of water. The bartender pulls out a gun, points it at the man, and cocks it. The man says "Thank you" and leaves. What happened?
The question and answer segment might go something like this.

 1. Question: Could the bartender hear him? Answer: Yes
 2. Question: Was the bartender angry for some reason? A: No
 3. Question: Was the gun a water pistol? A: No
 4. Question: Did they know each other from before? A: No (or: "irrelevant" since either way it does not affect the outcome)
 5. Question: Was the man's "Thank you" sarcastic? A: No (or with a small hint: "No, he was genuinely grateful for some reason")
 6. Question: Did the man ask for water in an offensive way? A: No
 7. Question: Did the man ask for water in some strange way? A: Yes
Eventually the questions lead up to the conclusion that the man had the hiccups, and that his reason for requesting a drink of water was not to quench his thirst but to cure his hiccups. The bartender realized this and chose instead to cure the hiccups by frightening the man with the gun. Once the man realized that his hiccups were gone, he no longer needed a drink of water, gratefully thanked the bartender, and left.

The creator may give hints to lend the solution if everyone is stumped. Eventually someone should come up with the correct theory.

To start, this puzzle is rather..cheesy. Think cheesy mystery novel or manga cheesy. It is also more vague than the example, so if more hints are needed, I'll give them.

The grand finale ended up being her grand finale.

Did Denny's come out with a new Grand Finale platter and did she perish upon consuming it?

Is the grand finale her dying? (Seems super obvious, but these things are tricky on purpose. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D/' /> )

One of the "grand finale"s in the original statement is.

Sums so far:

One grand finale refers to music (though it needs to be more specific).

One grand finale refers to her death.

Is the music classical music (i.e. piano/orchestra in front of an audience)?

Was it a singer for an opera or a musical of some sort?

Is what type of performance she was doing relevant?

Was her accidental death caused by an external (outside the body) factor?

Was her accidental death caused by an internal factor?

[was about to ask whether it was internal or external, but I guess this modifies it into yes/no]

Was her death caused by her singing?

If she was not singing, would she have died?

Was it a concert of some sort?

Has she done what she did when her accidental death occurred before?

You know, this is SUPER LAME of me, but I forgot/lost the note I scribbled the problem on. I should know what it was, I made it up. I did it at work when I was bored one day and I think I threw my note away when I got home with all my other work scribbles. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lesson:' />

So, I think this is my solution, since I've read over the thread:

The girl in question is a pop singer. While singing onstage her microphone shorts out, sending an electrical shock throughout her body. She's had arrhythmia since she was a small girl. The combination of the intense dance routines of the concert and her condition caused the shock to give her a stroke. Treatment took too long and she died.

If anyone wants to do their own puzzle that won't end in stupidly throwing the item away, go for it. I'll be an avid participant. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />
