Tommy February6 - Strawberry Cream Soda Pop

Post by AEUGNewtype »

On February 29th (what a coincidence,) Tomoko Kawase is releasing her first song as her Tommy February6 persona in almost 3 and a half years, since November of 2005. The song is not being released as a single, but a new track on her Tommy February6 best album. The only unique content of that album is this song being on the CD and the DVD that comes with it also has the PVs for her 3 previous February songs, none of which were previously available on DVD.

The video is already out, and its fantastic, as I expect from her, but I found another small interesting tidbit in that it takes its chorus almost directly from a recent H!P song. I'll get to that later. I have some screenshots from the PV as well as a link so you can check it out. Its exactly on par with her previous stuff, but more of a throwback to her older sound than Lonely In Gorgeous was, since that took on a bit of a new sound for her.

She also has a best album from the Heavenly persona due out on the same day, but it has no new content, so I don't care. I own all of her other unique releases from the past, but if its something that redundant, I'll pass on it.

Anyway, you can watch it on YouTube in terrible quality here or go download it from a tracker for better quality.

The video starts with the awesome-looking titles and the chorus in a bit of a downplayed arrangement. By the time this chorus was over, I had already identified exactly what song it was taken from. Have a look right here and just listen to the chorus of BIG WAVE. It's a faster version of the Tommy February chorus, except the February song has 2 or 3 of the notes changed, but same progression and structure with almost the exact same melody. Its awesome since both songs have such different arrangements, and both are great songs.

Now on to pictures:

She uses both her February and Heavenly personas in the video, just like she has in the last half dozen or so Heavenly PVs:

The cheerleader motif is back:

Any thoughts? Happy with her return? Disappointed?

Also, Heavenly6 has "Gothic Melting Ice cream's Darkness Nightmare" next week, about 2 months since PAPER MOON.

I mentioned that up in my original post. I edited my post about 30 seconds after I posted it to include that, but again, there's no new content there like there is with this one except the PV for her newest single being on the DVD, but that song is not that good.

I seriously thought you just made up that title to make fun of Heavenly's other titles, and I was going to compliment you on your funny. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... wheely.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Her Heavenly career seems to have just kept going deeper and deeper into a parody of itself, so this title doesn't even seem weird to me. This is basically what both of these personas are about, is parodying a certain type of pop culture and often having good music using those styles to go along with it. Its too bad her recent Heavenly releases haven't kept up with the tradition of good music, though.

That is a great way to sum her up! I've been trying to explain her to a friend and kept saying it was all sort of tongue-in-cheek.

Speaking of this, do you know if she actually plays the guitar?

The report has always been that she doesn't, and she never has in the few live events she's had as the Tommy personalities, and she never has in any Brilliant Green performances, either. Its also a rumor that she speaks English to some extent since a lot of her lyrics from these personalities are in English and she has the writing credits for a lot of the lyrics, but she admitted herself that she really knows no English. I'm guessing she probably uses an Japanese->English thesaurus or something to come up with the parts she does write in English.

I like a lot of her songs, but I didn't think this was anything special. I'm not sure why. Video-wise, I think it was all the white backdrops that got to me, and the 80s-ness of it was way over the top.

I really don't like the song, nor that Heavenly thing (though that one is admittedly worse, Heavenly has sucked for a lot longer of course).

She should just retire already, this is really starting to reach Paul McCarthian levels of stretching your welcome after you no longer have anything genuinely new to bring to your career. And I really like her (and Paul McCarthy for that matter), so I'm saying this with her best interest in mind. I can't imagine that she really needs to keep doing this for financial reasons, or at least I hope that's not the case.

You see, there are these things in the music industry called contracts, and she surely has one or many. Hence dragging out a career and releasing a bunch of redundant albums.
