Which netbook should I buy?

Post by BeForJess »

My good ol' 11 pound, 6-year-old Toshiba laptop has seen better days at this point... And I have a fairly decent desktop. What I want is a laptop that is actually portable, that I can use for net surfing primarily. I do want something that can run iTunes as well without crashing (a difficult task for my current laptop, sad to say).

I've narrowed my preferences down to 3 choices: The MSI Wind (Love Edition, of course!! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/wub.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> ), the Samsung NC10, and the Asus Eee 1000HE .

Battery life, hard drive size, wireless connectivity, ease of typing and weight are my main concerns. I am leaning toward the MSI Wind due to it being so light but having the large hard drive and long battery life I am looking for. I like the Samsung for the keyboard, hard drive and battery, but I have heard the wireless reception is not so good. And of course the newest Eee coming out has really nice specs and a better processor, and awesome battery life, but they tend to be clunky and the weight will be around half a pound heavier than the MSI that I like.

Anyone here have experience with any of these computers? I think I will be happy with any of the three choices, but I'm curious about what people prefer on the whole.

I personally have a Lenovo s10 which I love. Typing is easy on the keyboard, and wireless reception is great. Battery life is medium, with the 3-cell battery getting around 3 hours. The best part about the system, however, is that one door on the bottom gives you access to the Hard drive and RAM slot. I upgraded to 2GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive in about 3 minutes. To give me more battery life, I was able to get a 9-cell battery off eBay for about $75. It gives me up to 10 hours of battery life using Windows XP pro (I ran it an entire Saturday) and around 8.5-9 hours using Windows Vista, which actually runs quite nice on this machine. I can post pics of the keyboard and other stuff later if you want.

I have an Eee 701. It's hard to say what's good about it since I haven't used the other ones, and in fact don't use the Eee much anymore. And the only reason I got an Eee is because it was the first one that came out and none of the others were out yet.

It was useful for when I used it (on the subway), but I've since moved on to games and reading and other things during my commute.

The Eee is a half pound heavier, but coming from an 11 pound laptop, are you really going to notice it?

The Wind has a wonderful almost-normal-but-not-quite keyboard, which is more than I can say for the others. I really am enjoying mine.

I think the Wind is better than the EEE. You also might wanna look at the Asus Aspire One:

All of them are all pretty much Intel Atom based. I was gonna get a netbook but I think I'm gonna hold off until the end of the year when Intel and AMD will release new systems with "graphics on the CPU" which is supposed to allow even more power efficiency.

I ruled out some of the other netbooks based on the touchpads... I just can't seem to work with the buttons on the sides. Grr
