Rhythm Heave gets English dubs

Post by neshcom »

Destructoid is showing a video of a final build of RH as well as commentary from two contributors.

A day or so, DToid also had an article explaining the plans for English dubbing.

Here's a notable quote:
"The localization process as a whole raises those questions over and over again," says Amtower. "Like, if there's a reason to keep Japanese in the game, if there's something about the setting that makes it appropriate to the game title, then we keep that Japanese in there."

That being said, some of the songs required translation, especially ones that give directive to the player. It seems that the producer of the original recordings, Tsunku, oversaw the English recordings.
I pretty much agree with the commentators on the dubbing that we've seen. The female vocals are terrible, the male vocals are alright (at least for "Frog Hop"), if not unnecessarily dubbed.

I no longer feel terrible about flash carting my copy of RTG. I SUPPOSE.

edit: I now notice the title misspelling as Rhythm Heave, but I actually like it this way. THE TITLE WAS INTENTIONAL I AM FUNNAY.

....are you kidding me? Those vocals! Ahhh. I've never ever been one to complain about vocals. But really. I could have done a better job, even in English.

Ahahaha. Tap tap tap, VOMIT. Tap tap, DRY HEAVE!

No, really, the female vocals couldn't sound less bored. I think Frog Hop was still really cute, though.

I'm crawling out of the woodwork to say how much I do not like these females vocals, and I agree that they sound incredibly bored. I can image the girl sitting there with her left hand on her chin singing while rolling her eyes the whole time.

Sayumi could have done a better job. In English.

The vocals technically sound fine, and the localization is understandable, but the female singer just has no feeling in it.

I wonder if they'll change the chorus men to sound like this, though.

Got RH today and I thought I'd post any differences I saw specifically.

Remix 1-2:

Made to Scale/(what ever the first one is called): No difference

Glee Club/Chorus Men: Name change. "A-minna de" changed to "To-gether now" much a kin to sadude's previous post.

Fillbots/(the filling robots one): No difference.

Fan club/Idol: Song re-dubbed. "Hai" to "yeah," doki" to "boom," etc.

Remixes (presumably all): Romanized "Remix." Corresponding dubbed mini-games re-dubbed.

Rhythm Rally/Ping-Pong: Name change (a dumb one, too...). In-game text translated. (I think this may have been re-mastered, but I may be thinking of the second version...)

Shoot-'Em-Up/Shooting: Name change. In-game text translated.

Blue Birds: "Oo-soi de" changed to "Peck your beak." "Uh, i, so, ru" changed to "Stretch, out, your, neck." Voice is now female(?).

Moai Doo-Wop/Moai Song: Name change.

Remix 3-4:

Love Lizards: No change.

Crop Stomp: Maybe a new opening animation? No re-dubbing.

Freeze Frame/(the photography one): Name change?

The Dazzles/Box Show: See OP. "San, ni, ichi" changed to "three, two one." Song re-dubbed.

Munchy Monk/(dumpling one): Name change? Verbal cues re-dubbed. "Hai" to "one," "yo-yo" to "two-two," "ii, po, sa, ho(?)" to "three, ha, ha, go."

DJ School: NO CHANGE THANK GOD. Scratch-o!

Drummer Duel/(taiko one): New opening animation (I am mostly sure). In-game text translated. No re-dubbing on BGM yells.

Love Lab/Koi no ("Laboratory"?): New opening animation. Song not re-dubbed.

More to come.

Remix 5-6:

Splashdown/Syncro: Name change. Re-dubbed noise when girls are thrown to a more enunciated "alee-oop."

Big Rock Finish/Short Live: Name change, new opening animation. No re-dubbing.

Dog Ninja: No change.

Frog Hop/Kuro Kuro Dance: Lyrics translated into English. "Ho-ho-ho" to "Yeah-yeah-yeah." "Ho-ho" changed to "yahoo." Spinning sound cue to "spin it, boys."

Space Soccer/Lifting: Name change.

Lockstep/Uraomote: Name change.

Rockers: No change.

Karate Man: "Punch-kick" re-recorded. "Mitsu" to "now three(?)." Song re-dubbed to "Struck by the Rain." It's actually a really good re-dub.

Air Boarders: Song translated to "That's Paradise." Re-dub isn't bad.

More to come.

When I heard the bird announcer in the original, I always interpreted it as someone faking speech, rather than actual words. Like how they speak in Animal Crossing, why would they change the bird voice. Did they think it was the equivalent of "ching chong", only for Russians?

I liked the frog song, that was probably the best English cover. Since the whole thing was filtered and distorted, it's much easier to recreate the sound. They get huge points for keeping the "THANK YOU VRRRRRRRRRY MUCHYA"

Plus the SINGER ACTUALLY TRIED AND FELT LIKE BEING THERE.

I want to hit the new Idol stage girl with a brick.

Also, that whore sounds autotuned like crazy. Listen to that. The dumb bitch.

Nothing will ever replace Rainy, the new one sounds ok, but the instrumental kicks ass, so it still works. That's like a rule with Tsunku's music, a good song makes you not mind a less than good singer.

Sounds a bit like Coconuts Musume doing a cover of The Possible.

Delivering bad puns and deciphering

Listening to Karate Man: Ayaka, is that you?

No wonder it's a good re-dub. She should know Tsunku's music by now.

I actually got pissed when I got a perfect on Fan Club, thus unlocking that damn song.

The DJ School song is actually one of the most endearing on the whole game, I find myself humming it a lot - a lot of its charm comes FROM the "su-kratch-o!" and infectious enthusiasm. Of course I wish they had been able to include the Japanese songs, but it's still a pretty damn awesome game even with the English dubbing... those few clunkers aside.

You took the words from my mouth. When I first heard the vocals, I was like "Wait, has it been in production for that long?!" It really shocked me!

Fanclub was OK, but I still would have preferred the original version, even if it was thrown in as an extra. I really liked the japanese version of it after that Miracle Sexy Dynamite concert.
