Seems like I was quite spot-on.

My top 5 haven't changed since Pepper Keibu came out. Koko ni Iruzee has had a dramatic drop compared to previous times I've done this list. I don't like the c/w song and I like the c/w songs for the rest of my top 5. I was always putting the song at the top for nolstalgic reasons but realized there are other songs I listen to more then that. Note: I should add that the newer singles need some time before they start growing on me. Naichau Kamo is starting to grow on me. I liked Shoganai Yumeoibito when I heard it for the first time--at the AX Concert--but I haven't listened to it much since. But I will. And its ranking could change.



Favorite MM non-single: "Say Yeah Motto Miracle Night"

Since my list of B-sides I have actually liked is remarkably short, I don't tend to take them into account when deciding which singles are better, I mainly just consider the main song. Actually, with their new B-side collection coming out, perhaps a B-side ranking is in order after this one (Koi ING FTW).



I figured I'd give details on my top and bottom picks. My ranking:



1. Ren'ai Revolution 21.

Seriously, I can't think of many songs by anyone that build up to such a great finish. This song embodies what MM is for me, and even though I'm not a fan of the male rap (I actually made an edit to remove it, haha), this one has to finish first for me.



2. Iroppoi Jirettai

This single, as soon as I heard the preview, I was in love with it. I love the girls' voices paired with each other on each line, I love the poppy spanish sound to the song, and SEXY ISLAND. I fell in love with Reina all over again on that line.



3. Resonant Blue

This song has so many cool parts, so catchy, but all in the same song. I love the verses, the refrain, the bridges, all of it. The leading ladies' voices sound awesome - Risa and Reina's parts really stick out as having nice vocals.



4. Love Machine

Yeah, it's been beaten to death, but even so I'm still totally energized and "Wow wow"ing every time I hear it. It has a great disco pop feel and propelled the group into real fame.



5. The Peace

Best music video ever. The song is fun and ridiculous, the kind of carefree pop I know I can count on Morning Musume for. Also, one of the few with a decent B-side... But aside from that, you can't top a dance scene surrounded by disco urinals.

I like the concept of telling a bit about all the members but hate the execution. The song itself - the tune, the music, etc - I think it sucks. I wish they had done this concept, but with a more entertaining format. Also hated the choice of group vocals for a song so individual-centered - versions 2 and 3 got this much better, but still had the annoying tune.



37. Memory Seishun no Hikari

Booooorrrrringggggggg......



38. Namida ga Tomaranai Houkago

A prime example of giving Sayumi lines before she was ready for them. Konno is perfect and I love her parts so much (the second verse, too), but when Sayu comes in it sounds like a cat vomiting. Why why why...!



39. Happy Summer Wedding

Seriously irritating, I never understood why so many people liked this one.



40. Koi no Dance Site

Annoying to the core. Although it gave us Sexy Beam, I still can't stand the song itself.



41. The Manpower!!!

Horrible horrible horrible. I hte the sound of this song, I hate the forced sound of the vocals, I hate everything about this song and usually prefer to forget it exists.

I didn't give them numbers because I like a lot of them equally and/or my ranking changes around depending on my mood or how sick I am of a particular song. The top tier are consistently my favorites, the second tier are songs I generally like pretty well, the third tier are the songs I'm iffy about and rarely listen to, and the last two I flat out dislike.

7. Aruiteru (I surprised myself by having this so high, but the "aruitekou" verse alone bumped it up a bunch of spots, but the damn smooth jazz sax interlude should make me drop it back down. Oh well.)

Like I said, I'll listen to any of these now. Even Namida & Ai Araba at least remind me of that awesome bootyshake moment from Kouhaku. Out of curiosity, I tried that ranking page Trike listed & even though there's a few discrepencies (such as a 4-star song placing higher than a 5-star one, etc.) I can live with it. But always trust automation over the human mind! Always!

I was dealing with all 40 singles anyway because the day before this thread was made, I was redesigning MM cd covers just for the heck of it, so since I had all 40 titles on hand in order, I just used those.



When you copy another poster's list, it's easy to get lazy if you see a chunk of songs that are close enough to how you feel, and you may just leave them there. Especially with 40 songs, because I feel like every 10 or so fall under the same category of how much I care about them. I was still tempted to leave some in chunks, especially earlier singles. First thought was "rescue my precious DAITE! HOLD ON ME and throw the rest in the late 20s early 30s" but I eventually switched them around.

Surprises:

"Resonant Blue" cracks the top 10

"Shouganai Yume Oibito" cracks the Top 20



Non surprises:

The top of the list is mostly older stuff. Then again, it's only the last half of the bottom 11 that I don't like -- basically from "Aruiteru" on down. Everything else I at least lilke somewhat.



If I were to pick a best overall single, including b-side, the hands down winner would be "Ai Araba It's All Right" as "Dekiru Onna" would easily rate above half of their a-sides on my list.
