I never understood the argument that goes "This is just another UFA scheme to make more money!" when any major changes are announced. So what if it is? Isn't that the point of any business? And if it is successful and profitable, doesn't that just mean that it spawned something that's worth spending money on? So, win/win?

I think the idea is that UFA stirs the pot, news outlets report it, and the public remembers that H!P still exists.

I raised this question in my blog entry on Koharu (which includes the transcript of my interview portion with her from AX): Was this move on her part in the works before the trip to AX? If so, did the other girls know or not? Could it perhaps explain some of her behavior on the trip?

Why do you think that? I don't find her to be a good singer at all, but I don't think she's gotten any worse. Really? It seems so random and weird to me. Management doesn't give a shit about their artists, ever, and I don't see why H!P/UFA world is much different. If the girl is a burden on the group's profit making ability -- or if they can make more money as a solo act-- then they will be slowly moved out. In the past, graduations are calculated to promote a girl's solo career OR they are largely decided when the member has been around too long. This move suggests neither yet, which is why it seems so weird to me. Moreover, girls often quit for personal reasons (Yaguchi, Konno, Fukuda, Country Musume's Rinne) but it seems that this was sprung on Koharu. Despite what WE think, Koharu has been a wildly successful member with her Kirarin work and yet she's being "graduated" early without any announced plans for her future (unlike with Abe, Rika, & Maki). It is simply a vague, "well, she says she wants to model."

No one else finds this odd?

I hope Tsunku doesn't take the AKB48 route and shuffle the members of H!P around or pull a Miki and put Manoeri in Momusu because of her "popularity."

I really have nothing to say about Koharu's graduation except that's one less member of the vocally challenged members of Momusu. She provided character to her group and did her miracle thing for a while, but I guess with Kirarin done with and nothing else going for her within the group, it's time for her to move on. :T

2004: 1st gen Abe Natsumi is graduated to have her own H!P solo career

2004: 4th gen Kago and Tsuji are graduated to have their own H!P careers as W

2005: 1st gen Iida Kaori is graduated...

2005: 2nd gen Yaguchi Mari quits due to paparazzi scandal

2005: 4th gen Ishikawa Rika is graduated to have her own H!P solo career with Viyuuden

2006: 5th gen Konno Asami and Ogawa Makoto quit to pursue studies

2007: Fujimoto Miki quits due to paparazzi scandal

2007: 4th gen Yoshizawa is graduated...

There are only 4 members in the history of mm that were "graduated" without any clear future plans and these 4 were (at the time of the graduation) not very popular anymore among the major mm fan base. Of course of course Nakazawa & Kaori were given these half-assed albums, but basically they were shunted to a lower tier in the entertainment priority because they were not big players anymore. I don't remember how Kei and Yossi's graduations went down, but it also seemed rather vague. Koharu is sooo popular among kids that this forced graduation is so odd to me.

If they want Koharu to have a big solo career after some years of training, I might understand the vagueness of this all. Still, why mention she wants to be a model if that is their plan? This all feels arbitrary.

I just meant that (if we take Tsunku's comment at face-value which is dangerous of course) since Koharu was puzzled, then it doesn't really seem like she did anything wrong or something scandalous except that the company wants to change something.

I mean, I guess she is an insane idiot, so I suppose I could see that even if she did something to upset the group, she wouldn't realize it.

Well, Koharu's still keeping the Oha Star work that she's doing - for now; they might have her leave in the new year or April (it seems like a lot of TV programs in Japan like to start new seasons every quarter, and I'm just pulling this weak conjecture). So I guess this isn't so much of a huge image change like Miki going from GAM to hiatus to enka.

It still doesn't explain being removed from Hello!Project, though.

On an aside, has anyone noticed how we've never had a full-out graduation concert since Yossi's? (Except for Biyuuden; then again, they were a whole group.) I would have thought those more drawn-out graduating periods, like Rika's entire year and maybe Maki's (I don't remember) would generate more publicity. But now just the shunting of ManoEri from Ongaku Gatas (and the girl is an actual soloist), Umeda Erika, and Koharu seems really weak and hastily planned.

This is absolutely same with Maki's case, if you mean October 2007.

When Maki annoucend that she leave H!P, she actually terminated her contract with UFA. But the news of quitting UFA was never announced until the shareholder's meeting of Avex on June 19th, 2008.

I believe that Koharu already said bye-bye to the management of UFA.

You should read H!O or the other posts in this thread.

UFA had nothing to do with Koharu leaving, Tsunku did and Koharu didn't know about it. She isn't even leaving UFA, just Hello!Project. She's moving into M-Line, Erika on the other hand is leaving UFA all together that's a whole other kettle of fish.

Koharu didn't know about this till recently so I'm sure she didn't know much of anything on her trip. If she knew about it before hand her management wouldn't have added her into next years Morning Musume calender and they would have given fans more notice for when they ordered their H!O concert tickets.

It's quite obvious that Tsunku just has a serious case of A.D.D, DUH!

Honestly, it seems like a big jump from a sudden announcement to say she had all these conflicts. Also, I'm pretty sure we knew Maki dropped her contract way before the avex stockholders meeting, especially seeing as she was there and she had an avex site before then.

I think products are difficult in that situation. They may have to do the shoot for the photos quite a bit in advance, edit, check for errors, and they have to print in advance. I don't imagine they'd be able to just say, "ok, she is mysteriously not in the calendar" ..that you are seeing previews for in August, because we need to promote it early ~think nothing of it~ (yet)

If we want to talk about girls not being around and still in a future product, I present to you Kanashimi Twilight on Platinum 9 DISC. Miki & Yossi obviously weren't in the group for a long time, and that wasn't a crucial single to include (because it was on the All Singles Complete album) P9DISC could have easily been released without it, but it was there.

So I don't think there are any major rules involved with releasing something containing graduates, ESPECIALLY if they are still under UFA, which she will be.

Also, including Koharu raises the value of the calendar significantly, it's one more new item that her devastated fans can get even while she's out of the group. Her inclusion basically strengthens the idea that there were no hard feelings.
