What's "The Best Ten"? From 1978

The above link is to a new DVD box set featuring Momoe Yamaguchi's performances from a TV show called "The Best Ten," from 1978, per CDJapan's listing.

It's pretty pricey, but the only video I have of Momoe is her 1980 farewell concert. I'd love to get DVD volumes of a TV show she was on, provided the songs and production are good. But I'd rather know more before I buy.

What kind of show was it? What would the segments be like? Did she sing her hits or covers of other songs? Did she just sing on it or do other stuff, like interviews and skits? I'm really only interested in musical segments.

Thanks.

A quick google search for "Japan the best ten 1978" brought up a youtube video of ABBA performing Dancing Queen, the No. 2 song of the week. I'm just going to take a wild guess and say that "The Best Ten" was a top ten countdown show where artists would perform their song that placed in the top 10. A lot of the questions you ask on the BBS could be answered this way.

Looking over the Japanese description really quick to confirm, it says she appeared on the program with 12 different songs and hit the rankings 122 times during her career, and they've basically put together her performances on the show with all of the talk segments, including a celebration of her 20th birthday and some other memorable moments. No subs.

Disc one contains the songs Akai Kizuna and Otomeza Kyuu, Disc two has Playback Part 2 and Zettai Zetsumei, Disc three has Ii Hi Tabidachi and Bi Silent, Disc four has Ai no Arashi, Shinayaka ni Utatte, and Ai Zenbashi, and Disc five has Rock n Roll Widow and Sayonara no Mukougawa.

I'm pretty sure it's this show I see performances of her often:

The hosts are kinda interchangeable, but I think the girl was on for a long time. They had that same set design for years, because I saw a show from the early 80s and it was still like that. @.@

And I totally want that box. Why's it gotta be so expensive? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':eekrun:' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' />

This is helpful information. Thank you. (I ask questions here because I find it difficult to get the kind of info I'm seeking from the standard Google searches. I do usually search first and if it's something I can find on my own, I don't ask here. I try not to be a burden. However, often the only source material with answers for these questions is in Japanese, which I can't read. On this board, the info usually comes filtered through people's personal experiences with the material, i.e. people who actually know something about it. It's a more reliable and trustworthy source for me than, say, Wikipedia. I like the human touch. E.g., in a public library, I ask the reference librarian questions rather than go to a computer terminal--although they often send me to one. In subway stations, I prefer buying metrocards from the token booth clerk rather than the machine. Just a quirk of mine)

Anyway, the CDJapan page for this Momoe box set says the combined running time of the five discs is 420 minutes. That's seven hours. Let's just estimate that the total running time of the songs alone, based on the list you provided above, comes out to about an hour. That's six hours of non-singing. And the price in dollars currently listed on CDJapan for the whole set is $258.95. That's quite a lot when all I want is the 11 or 12 songs. Maybe I can find a used copy in Book Off in a few months. (And they'll still charge $199.99!)

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if there are several performances of the same songs. It says she hit the ranking with 12 different songs, but 122 times. I doubt a show that focused on a top 10 countdown really had all that much talking (think of music station - the talk parts are usually no more than a few minutes long and the performances are the majority of the show), at least not enough to make up 6 hours of footage.
