The most popular Japanese artist in worldwide

I think the most-known and popular Japanese artist in overseas is Amuro Namie.

Watching the dvd of BEST FICTION solidify my idea. The reaction from Taiwanese fans is incomparable to other Japanese artists.

In USA, probably PUFFY is most popular. In Germany I guess Shanadoo is the most popular one.

But if you include Japanese born overseas, Mike Shinoda might be more popular than Amuro Namie.

In all honesty, when I saw this thread, my first thought was, "it better be Namie." Though, after seeing the BFT, I'm a little surprised it actually strengthened your belief. PUFFY hasn't been popular in America in YEARSSS. No one here has even heard of them since their animated toon flopped. I'd probably venture the thought that BoA or Utada has the biggest presence. And I don't know who Mike Shinoda is at all so... As far as Taiwan is concerned, I believe w-inds has been successfully making Taiwan wet for years now. I'd chock up the crowd from BFT just being excited to see a live show. Honestly, all live DVD (typically) have large audience reactions.

I'd go with Utada Hikaru (she did sell quite some albums in europe and north america) or Ayumi Hamasaki.

Asian fans seem to just follow whatever is already popular in Japan. Europe and America are harder to guess at but really? There is no Japanese musical presence in mainstream America. The only "Japanese" pop song that might pop into an American's mind is this:

Utada is a good bet -- but not because of that horrible first album that died quietly in the reggae section in dusty ignored music stores with no promotion. She sings the songs on the super successful Kingdom Hearts games and that might have generated some knowledge about her work. Who knows.





However, I think Puffy actually makes a good contender -- again, thinking about mainstream audiences. At least Puffy had mainstream success with a cartoon, a few appearances on tv (like late night tv), and at least one English album.

He's only Japanese in race (and isn't he only half Japanese? I'm just wondering, my Linkin Park days were a looong time ago and I don't remember much about the members), not nationality, so I don't really consider him a Japanese artist, though if one were to count him, I'd say he's definitely more popular worldwide than any Japanese (nationality) artist that has ever tried to cross over from Japan.



Personally, I'd say Ayumi Hamasaki is the most known worldwide. Even totally random, non-weaboo people have known her name in my experience, from watching an episode or two of Inuyasha with the Dearest ED. A lot of my friends have Dearest and No More Words on their ipods.

In my experience, just from kids I've met... Usually they're into J-rock bands like ORANGE RANGE, Maximum The Hormone, etc. J-rock artists who have done theme songs for anime, because that's what these kids are watching, so naturally that's where they would be exposed to the music. Other than that, yeah, banking on Ayumi or BoA here. There's a girl in the Japanese club (read: weeaboo party) at my school who is very much into BoA.

Even if they're only known in the gaming market, they probably are still bigger than the pop artists.

Also Kumi Koda has had her moment with the Real Emotion theme for FF X-2. Faye Wong had a bigger moment with Eyes on Me, but she's not Japanese. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/meh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':huh:' />



But the above are rather limited to the general weeaboo audiences. And because the first post did not specify it's only about musical artists, then there's one name that tops them all - Akira Kurosawa.
