I am hoping for the best, because unlike H.O.T, this involves hundreds of thousands of fangirls, not even counting the millions of unofficial ones. The shit that will go down if they DO split will be Legendary, you can count on that. I'm actually kind of surprised they are allowed to appear on Kouhaku, as their status is kind of... sketchy.
H.O.T was huge in their day, as was Shinhwa. Neither had the same level of international fame (no Kpop group really did back then), but these are groups girls used to threaten to commit suicide over. In the grand scheme of things, it probably won't be much different.
It's the level of international fame that separates DBSK from H.O.T... obviously, like you said, H.O.T (or Shinhwa, but I'm not counting them since they technically ARE still together...) didn't have as much international fame. Thus, they had a smaller fanbase, statistically - H.O.T was big for their day, but they're small(er) when you compare them with contemporary groups.
It's not so much whether girls will threaten to commit suicide over the group if DBSK breaks up (they will), it's more like the sheer number of them that will.
... ANYWAY. How many songs do they generally get to sing for Kouhaku? The reason I ask is because Jaejoong & Yoochun's little mini-single thing sold quite well, so I'm wondering if they'll split ( irony!) to perform the songs from there.

IIRC, usually one full song or a short medley. H!P usually does medleys.

No, because then he'd have to figure out how to construct a full sentence.
Actually, based on his name, it's just the Fiscal Year 2008 coming in to laugh at the world for its poor economic performance last year.

What's the first thing you do when you return home after a concert?

Did Mika Nakashima sell a lot this year? Not being a snark, I genuinely don't know.

How about those girl-bands playing pop-rock that have been gaining popularity recently? SCANDAL, Stereopony, Chatmonchy, etc. I'm not sure how strict the requirements are, so they probably don't sell enough (usually only making the top 10 on the weeklies), and perhaps the "rock" music would be too much for the sensitive families watching the show. But it would be something new at least.

Judy And Mary, Whiteberry, and ZONE have all played the Kouhaku.

Not at all. She never actually sells well, but her songs and her herself seem to be really popular. Whenever I feel like watching Japanese TV via Keyhole or whatever she's always in commercials endorsing something, and ORION was like, the 3rd most popular song to sing at karaoke this year or something? But she rarely ever sells more than 30k for some reason. ORION only sold around 65k.

So...excited...
Want it nooooooow! This time, I'm going to force my coworker to sit and watch it with me while we're supposed to be working. Because that is how I roll, yo.

Did anyone watch it, and if you did, could you give us your brief thoughts on it? Was it good? Was it bad? Was it just like every year and ho-hum? Seriously, did Morning Musume miss anything?

I only saw Ayumi Hamasaki's performance of ROOR RULE and I was unimpressed. It was just her and the dancers in front of some giant screens. It wasn't even a live backing performance from the band. I think the only special part was that she was lifted for a little bit by the dancers.

I missed the start but watched about a half an hour of it in the Capsule motel, and it was pretty meh, but mostly because the list of artists was pretty meh so I wasn't that excited about it in the first place other than just saying I watched some of Kohaku live in Japan lol.
I like the enka performances more than the pop acts at Kouhaku.
I wonder if this means I'm officially an old lady or if Kouhaku is full of FAIL acts.
That's exactly what I was going to say, funny enough. That the enka acts are the heart of Kouhaku for me. The day we stop seeing Kitajima Saburo or Ishikawa Sayuri, that's the day the world ends. And it makes me feel like an old man, in that I never get sick of seeing the enka folks perform the same exact songs... every year... over multiple decades of my life. Heck, in the case of many of these people, I own over a dozen greatest hits album from the same person. Those yearly ones that come out, I should say, but still. I have no doubt I will still enjoy this year's Kouhaku, and I look forward to seeing it. Although I'm behind the times, as I've never seen last year's show either. I don't like to watch it alone, and so I make it a point to watch it with friends and/or their families who do so. But last year, the timing just didn't work out.

Re: Kouhaku Performers List is Out
By the way, one of the enka guys graduated? I didn't understand if he would stop singing My Way or if that was his last performance in Kouhaku. And I'm sorry for forgetting his name, I do know him!
And yes, the enka acts are always more interesting but well, Kouhaku is for the whole family and only the old people still take it seriously. Some years ago, people would be really emotional about going up there, now they plainly refuse the invitation whilst the older are still there, year after year.
And this year's Kouhaku was no fun <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> The guests practically didn't interact with each other and for me that was the best part of every year I've watched.
