Konkon to be a TV announcer for TV Tokyo

So, on Tuesday morning (Japan time, of course) it was announced that Konno Asami will be working as a announcer for TV Tokyo when she graduates from Keio in April 2011. (See this for the news and the Japanese news article.)



Well, congratulations to her! I'm sure those old old roles on H!M must have contributed at least a tiny bit of help. I'm also really happy that she took the initiative and the guts to actually work towards a decent education and a career path that she wanted to do, rather than languishing in idol obscurity.



2011 is still too far away to predict how she's going to fare in the Real World and out of UFA, but anyway, here's to the best for the rest of your college life, Konkon! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol:' />

But no seriously, good for her. If she gets a decent, regular gig, this could make her one of the best known H!P members among the general public. TV announcers seem to get a fair amount of variety gigs as well (there always a Joshi Ana team showing up on game shows), so her fans (read: Trike) might get to see her doing some fun stuff too.

I'm so happy for her. There actually were rumors going around because an announcer for... Fuji TV I think? Talked about Konno going to a training class for announcing in her blog. Not really sure if it's actually putting her smarts to use, because from what I can tell, announcers are chosen by their looks and how well they speak moreso than their brains. They do always seem to come off as not total airheads, though. I guess that's what separates them from idols.

She's a nice girl, but I don't know if her slow "character" she always had in H!P is a reflection of her real one and this could definitely make her very boring as an announcer.

She never had the most exciting voice and unless she hasn't changed her way of speaking, she's not really fit for this job imho.

As she was about as tone deaf as Koharu but not pretty enough to get away with it, I'm marginally pleased that her media experience will be applied elsewhere. Now if she can just get over talking like she's stoned all the time, her exaggerated reactions to food can be imposed upon Fuji audiences for at least 3-5 more years. Hopefully she'll do all of her "announcer" work while looking like vulnerable prey in a bikini, so as not to alienate her H!P fanbase.

Actually, her personality is perfect for something like this. She's understated and personable while being relatively well known.

Personally, I'd rather hear her singing. She improved so much! I just have to wonder - why go to Keio if you're just gonna go right back into being a tv personality? I know Sho did it, but it just seems so odd that Konkon is already OUT of the idoling game yet she's jumping back into it.

TV Announcer =/= Idol. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hatthe.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':pouty:' /> I don't follow Konno beyond whatever news gets post at the BBS, but it doesn't sound like she was ever out of the industry entirely for very long to begin with. When she left MM to pursue her education, she wasn't gone before too long before she came back to do Ongaku Gatas. I have a feeling if Ongaku Gatas hadn't fallen by the wayside as a unit, she'd still be active with them while going to school. She still plays futsal with the team and all.



And although Trike is right - new announcers are chosen mainly based on their looks and speaking ability - if I'm remembering correctly from the special I watched like a year ago (>.>), the applicants have to have a college education. So maybe this is something she was thinking about all along?

Eerm...but TV Announcer also =/= journalist. I'd actually classify a certain type of female TV announcers as "idols." You know - they are not journalists but are rather pretty and in their mid to late 20s and can read cue cards really well. The American equivalent might be Maria Menounos (who was a former beauty queen and Pantene model) but she's actually qualified so maybe a better equivalent might be the pretty ladies that host Extra or Entertainment Tonight. In Japan, they usually sit in on overly perky morning shows and become mini celebrities like Cristal Takigawa or Megumi Oishi (Hyde's wife). Popular announcers can still put out bikini PBs and crap. Japan's media world is really weird and seamless so in a way, you might think of them as non-singing idols in their mid-20s.



ANYWAY, I don't actually hate Konno. She seemed like a nice rational girl who knew she'd have to educate herself to survive after morning musume. She is cute sometimes and was always good natured. I just hate what she stood for: the total wtfness of the group (a girl who Tsunku wanted to add because she supremely sucked at everything) and was popular with wota because she seemed like a passive rape victim.

Yeah, that's basically why I said idol. I consider those TV hosts and announcers who tend to become ~tv personalities~ to be idols, personally. Just a different kind of idol.

No, but I didn't imply that either. I just wouldn't call it "jumping back into the idoling game," as it is a fairly different line of work from anything she's done as an idol before. Even the kind of stuff Mari and Mai do on Hexagon is fairly different from the typical career of an announcer. Of course we have no way of knowing what type of career path she'll follow this far in advance. For all we know she could be doing mainly sports announcing since she's tied into the futsal team. There's tons of announcers out there, but the ones that you actually end up seeing all over TV as ~*tv personalities*~ tend to be limited to the most popular/cutest/veteran ones. Sure, there's a lot of crossover in the Japanese media regardless, but I still would say this is a fairly new career path for Konno - unless the OG Team livens up and she ends up more like Sakurai Sho, of course.

I also think it could be something a little bit out of the idol world, else they wouldn't wait for her graduation (it's like they are waiting for her to be more prepared or even training her themselves - although that sounds improbable for Tokyo).
