Congrats to Arashi on claiming spots 1-3 and 5! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> And major kudos to Akimoto Junko on winning the Sen no kaaaazeeee niiiii award of random old people music in the top 10 for this year. Her single came out last year, but apparently became crazy successful after her Kouhaku performance and sold tons more this year than it did when it was originally released.



Kanjani8 making it into the top 10 is also pretty impressive, especially considering how late in the year the single was released and how it kind of sucked. I'm surprised ayaka's singles weren't higher up after all the hype she's gotten this year. And this K-ON! anime must be really popular, it's all over the list o.o



H!P didn't do too bad overall, I suppose. Whenever I can find it, I'll add the album ranking to give a more complete picture.

That said YEAR OF ARASHI indeed. They had an awesome string of singles and deserved it. Other acts just needed to step up. And Arashi included, year of Johnny's domination.

Lots of American artists on the charts this time, which is to be expected since singles don't really mean anything in America. Arashi tops the charts again, but the top 20 is a little more varied. Some of the artists in the top 10 just released their albums before the counting stops, so the rankings might have been different if they'd had more time to sell.

The Beatles re-releases are doing well all over. I am pleased their music is still relevant. @aquachan - the Beatles are the best selling artist of all time. It's not surprising they're making that much money in Japan, especially with the recent remasters. Did The Carpenters have a drama song or something? That's an out of there ranking I didn't expect. I'm going to go listen to them now and pretend to eat a sandwich in Karen's honor. I wouldn't be surprised if Michael Jackson has top albums for the year all over the world. Sad his death is what drew people back to what really mattered.

I think the Carpenters have just been popular in general in Japan since they were active. I'm always hearing random celebrities mention their songs.

The Beatles always sell well worldwide, but I think they made it into the top 5 this year because of their simultaneous worldwide re-releases this year.

Looking at the singles sales charts, it seems like most (except Arashi) groups only have mediocre and the overall sold singles of all Top 100 singles probably went down when compared to past years. This would actually be an interesting thing to compare, is there a site that archives the sales numbers of several past years ? (or give me the link to where it's on the oricon site)

I can see how Koda's 3 SPLASH did so well...I have that single and I love all the songs off of it. The videos are a little weird, but whatever.



Only thing that dissapoints me is the outstanding lack of MiChi. She released some amazing singles this year (KiSS KiSS xxx = <33) and she doesn't even rank in the Top 100. :s
