C-pop, aka Chinese Pop

Post by strawberryjam »

Does anyone else listen to Cpop? I remember BeforJess listened to Rainie whom I still have lost complete touch with. I would write a more elabroate thread if people showed interested... hm...

I really like Jay Chou because he composes all his songs and his PVs aren't bad most of the time, but his concerts are really terrible. I don't know why he is so weird. Will elaborate on this at a later date. For those that don't know him, he's been in a western movie, Curse of the Golden Flower. He also had to do with a couple of really horrible movies like Initial D. This is the Jay I try to forget, but he's really trying to do other things besides music.

A Jay song I really like.

Right now, I'm really obsessed with a Taiwanese singer named Show. I LOVE HIM in this live performance. His dancing isn't bad and his voice is deep~ And he's also good looking... He did a song with Kumi Koda before as well! I'm still downloading his concert and may post a review later. I don't really know much about him, unfortunately.

Here's his Platinum 9 Disco pose.

What's Cpop? I've always heard pop music from Hong Kong referred to as Canto-pop and pop music from Taiwan referred to as Mando-pop. (Referencing the languages, Cantonese and Mandarin, of those countries.) Is C-pop a generic term for Chinese pop? What about Mainland China? Is there any pop music coming from there? And what would you call it to distinguish it from the others?

For the record, I like Anita Mui (Canto-pop) and Teresa Teng (hard to classify--she sang in both Mandarin and Japanese).

Hm... for the sake of this thread, it's Cpop for pop in any Chinese dialect which I'm sure isn't politically correct.

I'm actually not a fan of any mainland Chinese artists. I'd like to change that though!

And wow, Madara, as if you couldn't surprise me more, I can't believe you know Anita Mui and Teresa Teng! They are such household names... it's too bad they both died prematurely.

For those unfamiliar, Anita Mui was the "bad girl" of HK pop. She started from singing at bars when she was a child to make ends meet. In early 2003, she announced publically that she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She held one last concert tour knowing her days left were little. Many people believed that she underwent early treatment, so it was really unexpected when she died later that year. Her last concert performance before she died. She's wearing a wedding dress because she wanted to "marry" the stage. She was already fairly ill here. That performance makes my stomach tie up in knots when I watch it.. it's really upsetting knowing that she would die shortly after...

And I don't really know about Teresa Teng. If she were still alive today, it would have been interesting to see her crossing over to Japan more. She died at the age of 42 from an asthma attack. One of my favorite songs by her. She has a soft, sincere voice. She might be a bit more old fashioned though.

Anita Mui was referred to in her time as "the Madonna of the Far East." (She was five years younger than Madonna.) She was also a movie star. I think the first movie I saw her in was a Hong Kong superheroine movie called THE HEROIC TRIO (1993). Anita played Wonder Woman, Michelle Yeoh played the Invisible Woman--no relation to any American characters with those names--and Maggie Cheung played the Thief Catcher. Everyone reading this has to see this movie. There was a sequel, EXECUTIONERS. Anita also starred with Jackie Chan in DRUNKEN MASTER II and RUMBLE IN THE BRONX, with Jet Li in MY FATHER IS A HERO, and with Chow Yun-Fat in A BETTER TOMORROW III. And many other films. THE MAGIC CRANE is one of my favorites and she spends the film flying around on...a giant magic crane! Hong Kong movies of the early 1990s were the greatest.

I haven't listened to any Cpop in a long time. But I do remember these artists: Fairyland in Reality, Stephanie Sun (Sun Yan Zi), Jolin Tsai, Fish Leong, Jay Chou and S.H.E. I liked F.I.R. and Stephanie the most. I'm gonna go back and listen to them now.

Agreed! I loved HK movies in the 90's as well. I'm not sure what happened to them in the recent years...

I haven't see those movies though so I will watch them! She was a great actress. HK was really filled with lots of talented stars before. Most were required to be good at acting as well! Sure, they weren't song writers, but their performing skills were top notch as well, imo.

Stephen Chow has always been a favorite of mine, although many of jokes are hard to understand if you don't know Cantonese. There's just this really good slapstick nonsense in the comedy that is hard to translate. Unfortunately, a lot of his Western movies exclude this so I'm not too fond of his Western movies. The comedy just isn't as good. And now I've gotten off to a tangent!

I am not an expert on Chinese music at all! If you guys could recommend me songs from these artists, that would be great. I'm especially interested in Angela Chang, F.I.R. Stephanie Sun, and Fish Leong. I already like Jolin.

I do know Stephanie Sun's cover of the Beatle's song Hey Jude, which I love. Her English voice is beautiful so I'd definitely love to hear more.

Btw, are any of those artists from mainland? I think most of these people are from Taiwan? Stephanie is from Singapore, I believe?

Faye Wong is actually her Chinese name too, haha. I like her as well. She has a couple of other good songs. I guess Faye Wong is originally from mainland China, but she made her debut in HK. Here's her cover of the Cranberrie's song "Dreams." She's very.. uhm.. eccentric here. But she was always known to be like that in HK, it's kind of funny she toned it down for the FF stuff and appears all normal.

OH, here's an artist I like a lot. And my parents did too. Sam Hui was a famous singer songwriter in the 70's and 80's. Here's one of his songs with the translated lyrics in the video too. Ignore how badly that person spells words. I like how folk-y it sounds while being sweet and relaxing. He also has other songs which are funny.

Is that the actor Sam Hui ??

I love the Mad Mission/Aces Go Places movies. I have the 1-4 DVD Box here.

Here is the absolutely awesome theme song to the movies:

If you like Jackie Chan movies, then you will love Mad Mission/Aces Go Places, because they have a similar slapstick-comedy feel to them.

However, they aren't even trying to be serious, if anything, they are parodies on movies like James Bond etc.

Karl Maka (http://www.asia-zone.de/members/pics/boys/6442.jpg) is basically the co-star, also an extremely funny guy.

I'd like to get into more CPop, but I don't know where to start. I like girlpop, especially of the dance and bubblegum pop variety. Any suggestions? I see names being bandied about but with no indication of what type of music they sing.

All I know about cpop is that I like Xiang Xiang, she put out a few songs. My favorite beingMouse Loves Rice the english version, mainly for the way she sings it directly. It's cute. xD You can find her stuff on iTunes. (Chinese version of Mouse Loves Rice)

I also bought a CD from a group called Morning Star, it was good It's like Sweets but minus the cool music. It's all really preachy music but their cover of Rainbow connection was good. xD (I'll have to find the CD because there ain't no mention of them anywhere on the internet I can find.)

I also like S.H.E, my favorite song being Bo si Mao, they also did a cover of a Britney Spears song which isn't bad I guess and Jolin Tsai, my favorite song is Hao Dao by her and its the only song I have. D:

F.I.R. has some good music,I wanna fly is my favorite song by that group. I played that song forever!

Stephanie Sun is good, I copied a few albums from her. She did a colab with Mai Kuraki a few years back, once on her album and another on Mai's. She had a few good songs. Anyway, they both sing in english. xD My Story Your Song and Tonight I feel Close to You

I learned and got all my Cpop music/info from a now defunct LiveJournal - http://zhongwenmp3.livejournal.com/

Also, great thing about going to a Chinatown is getting bootleg Chinese CDs for pennies. xD I got two best of collections from Faye Wong and one best of album from Sammi Cheng. I have no clue whats on them since I can't read Chinese but they aren't too bad.

I find that with chinese music it's all hit or miss. You either like it or you don't. It's a lot like American music for me. I'll like one song by and artist but hate the rest of the album.

IMO, most of the modern music is just no competition for jpop/kpop girl soloists/girl groups. I kind of feel embarrassed by that and a need to protect Cpop. As for the genre thing, maybe I'll set up a list of artists recommended with their videos and their genre of music. I don't really feel comfortable assigning genres to these people, but I'll try to be more descriptive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqCD7pQkl04 - Hey Girl, a girl group from Taiwan. I don't know anything about them. They seem ok... this song might be good if they didn't sing in such an annoying way!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrTQww9kkQ4...feature=related - Jolin Tsai. Her career is probably most like Maki's if I had to pick someone in H!P. She's changed record labels a few times too! And there was also a time where she suddenly reappeared in public with bigger boobs. Anyways, she did start off with more cutesy music, but now she's more like Maki, except not as sexy and touching her boobs.

Anyways, I'm pretty glad people are taking an interest. So thank you!!!!! Also, I feel very happy and nostalgic-y when Ap and Madara know artists from back in the day. That music was soooo apart of my childhood!

I've heard of BY2 before. Was it two chicks who sang really slow ballads? Do they have any exciting songs? I remember giving up when I wasn't in the mood for slow songs.

Yeah, they have a lot of slower songs... I wouldn't call them ballads, though.

Does anyone know about a band called 五月天? Which I think translates to Mayday? My friend likes to wax poetic about them but I haven't been able to get any solid information out of her, besides "they're really good".

Unfortunately my knowledge of c-pop extends to Super Junior M, and a few assorted songs by Jay Chou (like this hilarity) and I have a random Show Luo CD from Taiwan that my [different than the aforementioned] friend brought back because "I like pretty asian boys".

Jay Chou (like this hilarity)
He can be not weird sometimes and very talented. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> This song is TERRIBLE, but I think it's him thinking he's cool enough to be able to pull off a country song. To US, it's WEIRD, but it's JAY to Taiwanese and they're just like WOW. Or something.

Another song from the same album. SURE, HE LOOKS FUNNY fighting in armor and stuff. But the song is pretty good. I even got aine to like this song.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Rainie Yang. I only mention her now because I just downloaded her new album and I can't remember every Asian musical artist that crosses my path at the drop of a hat. D: Anyway the album was released on New Years day and it's called Rainie & Love …? and I know she just released a Japanese single this year as well covering her more famous song, Ai Mei into Japanese. I remember someone talking about her once on the BBS but it was probably a few years ago.

My two favorite videos from her.

Youth Battleis from her new Rainie & Love album.

Free Gate is from her My Other Self album released in 2007.

Dont Lose Any Sleep Over You is from her Not Yet a Woman album released in 2008.

She also did a Chinese cover of Zone's True Blue. Not as good as Zone but I give her props for trying. (The video is a live version from 2006 and I have NO idea what she's wearing. D:)

And yes, I like Rainie a lot. I talked abut her before. With BeForJess!

Artist: Yao Yao

Album: Honey

Language: Mandarin (Taiwan)

Anyways, here's some cutesy pop:

Honey

Yes, it's a cover of Honey by KARA. The PV is cute! A PV about sweets is always cute.

And an original song by her:

Di Di Da

Alice in Wonderland themed PV.

I don't know anything about her, except that she's known for her big boobs.

Well, that wasn't a huge response. I thought you guys loved your Kpop so I thought I could start by introducing a Kpop related song. Artist: The Girl and The Robots / 女孩与机器人

Album: Miss November

Language: Mandarin (Taiwan)

Genre: pop/electronic

Spinning Around

Awesome group name, too bad a Norwegian group has a way too similiar name. I believe this band is an indies group.

This song is upbeat, but slightly mellow! The girl has a sweet voice. Anyways, it is a fun song.

A little history lesson here about 80's/90's and a blast to the past.

In HK music industry, there's 4 heart throbs known as the 4 Heavenly Kings. These guys were and are still are REALLY popular not just for their music, but acting as well. And everyone had a preference who they liked the most. One of the 4 Heavenly Kings was Andy Lau. He's probably the most known in the West having played in movies like "House of Flying Daggers" and "Infernal Affairs," the original of The Departed.

BTW, the HK industry is quite tied with Jpop. I'm not for sure if it's quite the same anymore. But there were a number of HK artists that debuted in Japan with varying success including Andy who has made it to Kouhaku before. And yes, they even made the effort to sing in Japanese.

Today, I'm here to introduce Leon Lai. He is one of the 4 Heavenly Kings. I may introduce the rest on other days.

He sang a cover of Noriyuki Makihara's Mou Nante Shinai. And here's Leon's version.

In HK pop, this is probably regarded as one of the classics. Noriyuki is known to have written songs for SMAP, etc. And most recently Nick Carter. I just found all these connections amusing. I wonder if this song is regarded as a classic in Jpop? Doesn't seem like so much..

And an original song by Leon:

我愛IChiBan (Ngo Oi IchiBan, I Love IchiBan)

Yes, he is putting more random Japanese in his song with English as well.

Disclaimer: These songs are reallllly 80's. Haha.

Back from the dead! I think I'll post in this thread from now on introducing new songs. I've been sampling a lot of Chinese music lately.

OK, something much more modern now. This is much more in the vain of American music/Avex/K-pop this time.

Artist: G.E.M. / 鄧紫棋

Album: My Secret (2010)

Language: Cantonese (Hong Kong)

Genre: Pop, r&b, I guess

G.E.M. is a 19 year old singer-songwriter. She sounded like a foreigner to me, one of those overseas Chinese that return to HK to become famous. But it's actually caused by a shrinkage in her left jawbone. In the PV below, she actually reminded me of Jun Jun a little. Click to watch the MV please!

Thanks for this! She's cute and has a good voice. That's always a good start. And I don't know any Cantonese, so she doesn't sound like a foreigner to me!

What's with the weird backup dancers? They were really distracting and took the focus away from G.E.M. in that video.

The song itself was OK. It had a nice groove by the end and I remember it (edit: not after watching her other videos!), but it wasn't outstanding and was a little bit generic R&B.

I checked out some of her other songs, and I like those much better. They're less R&B and more acoustic pop.

They represented different kinds of bad people. The one in a uniform was a bad school girl.

Apparently, gothic and lolita girls are also considered bad, haha. I'm not sure what everyone was.

Thanks, I'll have to check out her other songs. I only just saw the Good to Be Bad video today randomly and found out about her. In the first song you linked, she sings Mandarin. It's common for Cantonese stars to switch randomly to get more audiences.

BTW, G.E.M. is one of the people's blogs I may start translating for. I want to be more updated with Cantonese slang that wouldn't be existent in Jun Jun or Lin Lin's blogs.

Joanna Wang...

Wow, I looked her up. She dropped out of Gabrielino High School. I had friends that went to school there and it's right by my family's house. Too bad she dropped out. I found that song you linked a little drab though. Her voice is also reallllly Americanized although she has an excuse.

I listened to those songs more closely now.

The first 2 songs are actually the same. The first one is in Mandarin, other is Cantonese.

First one is called 寫不完的溫柔, not 鄧紫棋 (that's her name, hahaha).

And yes, they sometimes have different PVs even if it's the same song.

I listened to her newest album and got really addicted to it so I'll be uploading it soon to the Audio/Video section.
