I completely disagree here (concerning sequels at least) and would change this statement to say "We're seeing a lot of sequels and revivals of old IPs which shows to me that the gaming industry finally gets it.

[/quote]

Starfox 64 and Pilotwings 64 for the 3DS would like a word with you. Honestly, this is not the direction anyone in the gaming industry needs to go. For fuck's sake, they're remaking N64 Goldeneye for the Wii with Daniel Craig's Bond as the player's character. I think he's a great Bond, but doesn't that seem all kinds of ridiculous to you? I'm sure 3DS will be impressively awesome, but I really don't want to see it become a springboard for 3D enhanced ports of decades-old games.

I play videogames for fun. I don't care where the fun games come from, who makes them, if they're new IP or old, what system plays them, ect ect. All I'm looking for is relaxing by entering a new world and doing things humans cannot pull off. If a game doesn't look fun or interesting, I don't buy it. I don't see the point in arguing the details. Gamers by and large want something, then when it's done, complain about it. I'm not going to deride a system that hasn't come out yet that I have not played just because it's different. I remember this same bs when the DS was first announced and gamers wanted their gameboys.

Kirby's Epic Yarn looks brilliant. I cannot wait.

Persona, SMT, AND Devil Summoner? Oh my god, my wallet trembles in fear.

"02:01 AM." It was late. Sheesh.

Look, if you don't want to argue about it , that's peachy-keen, but it's not wrong to be critical of the industry about having genuinely new ideas and remaking everything. Yeah, there will be some good titles to come out, but I just wonder if we're going to be seeing any new first-party IPs. And because it's Nintendo, it's very likely that, if we do at all, it won't be for a while.

And maybe this is a gripe I have with the industry and maybe even all entertainment industries in general) is that we aren't being taken to new places mentally, but rather milked out of experiences we had fun with before.

I'll concede that the 3DS list is majority ports/rehashes, but the point I made in my last post was then EVERY time there's a new handheld, Nintendo likes to port a ton of stuff. If you're worried about lack of new franchises on the 3DS (or anywhere, for that matter), then I think everything will be alright. There's always new (good) stuff every year. Not to mention, some of these older franchises were simply DUE for a sequel. It's not like ALL of these rehashes/sequels are from franchises that have had regular releases. Some are, like Zelda and Mario Kart. But the majority of Nintendo's sequel announcements have been for franchises that are due, like Kid Icarus, DKC, Kirby, (Goldeneye if you wanna count that) heck, I bet Star Fox 64 3DS, even if it's a total 100% rehash with no new stuff, would STILL be better than any other Star Fox game since.

Starfox 64 and Pilotwings 64 for the 3DS would like a word with you.

I was talking about sequels (like DKCR) which is why I went out of the way to cross out the revival part of the quote.

Now that you bring up the Bond game, I have a totally different concern about that. It's going to completely different, right? So basically, it's another Bond game, like all those 239742907 crappy Bond games after Goldeneye. Why are people suddenly thinking this is going to be good? Just because it follows the Goldeneye storyline? Don't get me wrong, I hope it's awesome, but I'm not expecting anything great.

Q: What is any industry run by?

A: MONEY MONEY MONEY

Q. What is difficult to sell?

A: NEW IPs!

Q: What is it YOU mention constantly?

A: PIRATING PIRATING PIRATING

Maybe if you want some new IPs you should start speaking with your wallet.

I'm not going to go over the financial troubles of the game industry because you should know about it. The entire "remaking" debacle should come as no surprise. But you know what, they're fun games. I haven't played some of them in years. When the price drops I'll give them a shot. No big surprise there, and I'm sure many other gamers feel the same. Hell, some of us have even grown up and have children that we might want to enjoy the games.

Nintendo has been around since like, forever, so like dude, they have so many IPs they don't need to shove new ones down our throats. Or did you forget Nintendo's new IPs, Wii Sports and Wii Fit? They're selling smashingly. May not be your cup of tea or even what you consider games, but they are new IPs. Look at all the clones.

All of Nintendo's announced titles seem to say "We want the hardcore gamer back". They might not know how, or even can, considering the stupid childish maturity of most Sony/Microsoft fanboys, but they're trying. Kirby's Epic Yarn is light years away from anything else I saw at E3. I'm glad Nintendo is moving back to cell-shading, which imo ages better and looks better than 4realz grafix yes, even castlevania lost to kirby <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Awheckwitit, I'm not even sure what I'm arguing anymore.

I never mentioned money or sales and while they are very important elements to the industry, I just can't flat out agree across the board that sales equal quality, but that's a whole other discussion.

I was just voicing my opinion that we're seeing a lot of older IPs. I didn't say they wouldn't be good and I didn't say they won't sell well. I grew up a little later in videogame history and I never had much of a history with Nintendo games so I'm not as attached to the games we're mentioning (DKC, Kid Icarus, Starfox). And maybe this is all about the games not being my cup of tea. And so even if my opinion of what I want isn't practical or reasonable, I'm just voicing how I feel about the situation.

And seriously, you're really getting mad and kind of personal. I don't need to be attacked to have a discussion. I think I've been pretty open minded through out this entire dialog to everyone's points. Yes, I've pirated a number of games that I probably otherwise not have been able to buy, but I have been trying to buy games more, and I don't need you yelling at me about it.

Sheesh.

If you can't take the heat, then don't broadcast that information. Especially when we're having a discussion about new IPs where sales are the be all and end all of that equation. I didn't think I was particularly harsh, but we're a small little family here so here's a hug and a cookie of apology. And if you could hear me then you'd probably laugh more than anything. I sound like a chipmunk on helium haha

I did not mean sales=quality. I mean sales=greenlit projects. And we're in an age where it's costing an exhorbant amount of money to make games, so only safe projects will be greenlit. How many studios have closed doors this generation due to one bomb? I see the game industry getting as bad as the comics industry and I really don't want that.

By the way, I put that note in because I tried to read that chunk of text five times and need some sort of line breaks/paragraph indentions to keep my brain from slushing. I study/work all day, try to help a sister out please!

...and for those of us who don't speak Third Reich?

If this is actually a remake of Ocarina, I'm 100% against this. I loved the N64 game & all, but I'd far prefer a new game.

On the side where it says "Mehr Screenshots", it means "here's pictures of Link on a horse". <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hawhaw.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

(this was probably already said but I scrolled through the debate, SORRY SORRY)

Didn't they not make many DSi games because DSis didn't sell as well as expected? And from the looks of it, 3DS will have all of DSi's features (and, obviously, then some), so it's not like we're losing anything here.

The Kid Icarus trailer is gorgeous - which leads me to believe that Nintendo is almost seeing this as their new handheld, rather than a fairly simple remake. There's no way - I mean really, is there? - they can pull off what appears to be nearly Gamecube-level graphics on the current DS system, so while they're conveniently using the DS design... the potential for the new system is kind of amazing.

... I thought using old IPs for the launch of essentially a new system were just a way to get people to buy the new system? Like how everyone rushed out to buy a Wii when Twilight Princess came out? (because the GC version was so inferior lol)... that was totally mentioned in the debate, but I mean, really, we're just looking at the games queued up for not even a year after the system release, you can't judge entirely based off that.

I am tired and probably sucking Nintendo's dick. In regular DS news: GOOOOOOLDEN SUNNNNNNNN!!!!1111!!!11

Okay, we're good. I think I may be hormonal or something. My vagina and all that jazz.

Yeah, I really don't like the hair-trigger for gaming studios. It's a sucky rich-get-richer system, but I think digital distribution coupled with more familiarity to the platforms is a nice half-fix to the necessity of publishers, retail merchandise, ads, etc. (at least for PC's...PSPGo). And then, the limiting factors in digital distribution come from bandwidth penetration and speeds (both of which are not decent enough for even DVD-based games to download timely). Or maybe digital distribution is not good enough for retail games. It was certainly a boom for the music industry, but I don't know that, comparatively, how well movies and TV shows are doing on services like iTunes.

Who knows, maybe OnLive is right with their tachyons.
