Nintendo 3DS announcement announced

Post by aine »

March 23, 2010

To Whom It May Concern:

Re: Launch of New Portable Game Machine

Nintendo Co., Ltd.(Minami-ward of Kyoto-city, President Satoru Iwata) will launch “Nintendo 3DS” (temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.

“Nintendo 3DS”(temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed “Nintendo DS series”, whose cumulative consolidated sales from Nintendo amounted to 125million units as of the end of December 2009, and will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.

We are planning to announce additional details at E3 show, which is scheduled to be held from June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles in the U.S.
FUCK YEAH!

I'm excited. I love my Lite and to date I didn't really see much reason to go with DSi. The new thingy will hopefully be a much bigger step.

I saw many opinions to the effect that N is prematurely killing a money printing machine, but when you remember that the core system was released nearly 6 years ago, this seems just about time for a big upgrade.

As for the "3D without special glasses" thing - there was this cool demonstration for DSi released recently. Could this be what they meant? Or will it be something entirely different and much more breathtaking? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /ph34r.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whistling:' />

Saw this this morning. Apparently, the XL still isn't out in America? Seems rather hasty, but then again, I'm ready for 3D to kick the bucket.

Re: 3D screen: It looks like Sharp is making a no-glasses display for 3D that is only suitable for smaller screens like the DS.

I find the first sentence in the pdf amusing "To whom it may concern". haha

This is interesting, eventhough I don't care about any kind of portable gaming device that is not a netbook. The new tech makes this the first interesting handheld, I'm definitely looking forward to more details.

Didn't we already have this same discussion like 4 times in the last few years? Nintendo sure is fond of deja vu, with the way they've handled the DS. What a crock of shit.

Oh Nintendo, didn't we already try the 3D gaming thing? Don't you remember what happened with it?

Definitely definitely agree, but 1) that was a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time ago and 2) the DS still has a ton of momentum and adding 3D will be the fuel to make it keep printing money.

I saw a demo of a game using the 3D tech they're going for and it looked fun/interesting/amazing. I'll give it a fair shot.

That's awesome, now theres no point for me to upgrade to the DS XL when it comes out. Granted the newer DS won't be out for a very long time, but it seems more worth the wait.

I still have my old chucky DS covered in 5 gum rappers, and it should last me till then, maybe.

Those changes were all extremely minor, and also were not advertised and marketed as if it were a new product, it was still just called a "PSP" plain and simple. Whether it had a different model number or whatever doesn't matter, the shape didn't change, it was mostly the internals that got upgraded, with only a very minor girth reduction, but no change in actual size.

Well, technically, here are still three different designs: original, Slim & Fit (which was advertised as such), and the Go. The upgrade from 1000/2000 to 3000 were rather similar from DS to DS Lite/i. The 3000 got a microphone, new screen, new buttons, and new tray. Pretty much no upgraded internal hardware. You are right that the shape and size are near-similar.

Atleast there's something new with 3DS.

That will be cool.

Kotaku posted about it also.

Looking at those pictures you can tell it's photoshopped in certain areas but aside from that, I'd want a machine like that on principle! Cheer up emo nesh.

So the conference is over, and I missed about 60% of the part I watched because my Internet as usual works like it was chocking on a fat massive dick. Anyways, some facts: 3.5" top display, top display providing 3D view without glasses, analogue control, motion sensor, 2 external cameras capable of taking 3d pictures, I think 1 internal camera, probably more stuff that I've missed. Go google, I'm sure there's better synopses everywhere by the time you read this.

The promised screenshots:

Image

Good news: it still has 2 screens!

Image

The impressive cooling block suggest that the rumours of performance matching that of 360/PS3 may not have been exaggerated.

Image

I wish they had stretched the top screen further. It was hard to tell for sure, but I think the size is the same only slightly larger than Lite. Which is a good thing.

Image

The first announced game is Kid Icarus: Uprising, which looked pretty neat if not a bit too sugary.

Image

Getting a bit redundant here Nintendo.

Image

They also showed an external accessory (in 2 colour variants) that you can attach to the console. However, they didn't explain how did it work and if it came as standard.

Bonus screenshot: all titles announced during the conference, for all N platforms.

Yeah, I was able to watch it live at a friends' house (since my ISP decided to fuck up our connection until tomorrow when one of their assholes is going to visit us and check some shit) and it was extremely well done.

Many new games, new hardware that people actually cared for, no ponchos and several surprises.

Sony just started theirs, I don't expect much new stuff from them though.

It will be a 3D remake.

I'm really sorta let down by Nintendo (and a little bit of everyone else, but less so)'s showing this year. We're seeing a lot of sequels and revivals of old IPs which shows to me that the gaming industry is in dire need of writers and/or character designers. Seriously, Nintendo had only about a handful of new IPs and everything else looks like a remake, restart, or ancient IP (Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong, Kid Icarus, that flying resort game one, Mario Kart, Nintendogs+Cats, Wii Party minigame funtime bonanza). It's nice to see a lot more 3rd-party support for the 3DS (Dead or Alive, MGS: Snake Eater-ish, 'nother Kingdom Hearts), but they don't exactly have a long track record with the DS. Hell, weren't there only, like, two DSi games (and I know KORG was DSi-enhanced so that only half-counts). I'm really expecting the sales and releases similar to the DS: lots of good, advertised games at first, then weening support later on (all the while printing money). Also, I don't like that the top screen is wider than the bottom. Now the screenshots look even weirder. Also, OMGOMGOMGOMGSTOPTHEMUSICPLEASEKILLME.

How about we talk about the other guys too? Yes, let's.

Microsoft seemed to show off their obvious sequels (GoW, Halo), Kinect, and the new 360. First off, the new 360 seems like such an unnecessary product if you have a 360 because if you wanted WiFi, you probably bought the adapter. I guess it being quieter is an up-side and it seems like a good value to new customers, but the design changes just seem uninspired. Then there's the Kinect (formerly Natal which was a much better name kthxbai). I don't know I wasn't exactly turned on by FULL BODY WAGGLAN. It seems like they've shifted to very casual targeting (possibly in a bid to follow Big N last year even though Big N has now shifted focus to nostalgia-goggle marketing).

I do not know as much about Sony's press conference and could not tell you much except beyond a few talking topics (wait, I wasn't doing that? I was, but I just told you now so nyah). Playstation Plus: Seems like it's not that expensive, especially if you get things like beta keys, free games, and early demos and such. Sony said that all the features you get for free now will remain free and PP will be a supplementary plan. It will possibly absorb Qore soon and should be up by the end of the month. A friend and I talked about this and he said we probably won't see great numbers in this service because it's not necessary to pay to play anything, and my response was "yeah, so?" So we'll see, but, frankly, it won't be any skin off of anyone's backs. Move still looks cool, though I really haven't look at the games they announced except the Heroes Party game with Jak, Sly, and Ratchet. It looks like most of their new Move games will be new IPs. So that's good. Also a new Twisted Metal. With flying cars. Kinda banging. There also seems to be a big shift into new PS3 releases being natively 3D which I guess is cool, though I'm not personally aware of what that entire process requires (like if you need a 3D-equipped TV). There was also a nice little upset when Gabe "Humanwreckingball" Newell (yep, another week) announced that not only would Portal 2 come to the PS3, but that it would shpi with Steamworks for PC online play as well as messaging. He caled it the best version for consoles (in my own words because the PC version will still be definitive duh). Also, what the what?

Also Crafting Mama is happening.

So, which of the million things I left out are you excited for?

I completely disagree here (concerning sequels at least) and would change this statement to say "We're seeing a lot of sequels and revivals of old IPs which shows to me that the gaming industry finally gets it. I'm all for new franchises, don't get me wrong, but I'm tired of waiting for companies (mainly Nintendo) to make sequels to games I love. I mean, why not? They'll cash in, and they should, barring wild circumstances, be great.

I've been waiting for a looong time for a proper DKC sequel, and I'm sure there are many Kid Icarus fans excited. On top of that, we get a new Mario Kart, a new Zelda, a new Kirby on a console which hasn't happened in like 7 years, etc. I've always complained that Nintendo has all the tools to make proper sequels to franchises everybody loves and yet we never see them. Instead, we see new stuff that is entirely hit and miss. New stuff is good, but sequels are great too.

As far as revivials of old games goes, the only focus of that I saw was on the 3DS, and as long as that isn't ALL there is to the 3DS, I have no problem with that. When the DS first came out we saw some of that (Mario 64 DS) and now that I think about it, there's a ton of revivals every time Nintendo has released a new handheld. LTTP on GBA, Mario Bros. on GBC, etc. I wouldn't read much into it unless, again, it was the ONLY selling point, but it obviously is not.

It's a tough spot releasing revived (and don't try to tell me Kid Icarus and DKC aren't revived) and renewed IPs because if you give people more of what they want, they imagine complacency and if you change things up, you get chastised for straying from the path. I can understand a number of the sequels coming out of Nintendo. Zelda makes sense, Pikmin is still rather new-ish, Metroid will probably be fantastic, but titles like Mario Kart and Animal Crossing being re-released in 3D (which I would argue they essentially are because, really, you can't change up Animal Crossing) are what annoy me the most. On a tangent note, seeing the call back to such old and rehashed series alongside really no new ideas kind of feels like they were really scraping the barrel for new games. I totally understand the call-back enjoyment from finally getting some new games to older series (kinda excited about Twisted Metal myself), but I guess I just didn't get the vibe that we would be seeing a whole lot of fresh ideas from the 3DS. Take a look at the list you posted earlier; there are a handful of truly new or recent franchises there. And maybe this is a gripe I have with the industry and maybe even all entertainment industries in general) is that we aren't being taken to new places mentally, but rather milked out of experiences we had fun with before. Okay, prime example. When Keeping Up With The Kardashians got big, they first got that spin-off show where two of the girls went to Miami and that was a pretty interesting series as a whole, we saw some smaller characters more often as well as new characters in a new environment. Then, we had the Ryan Seacrest Alliteration Series Run-Through (like Leave it to Lamas, Living Lohan) and now, in another off-shoot attempt, E! is (hopefully not) considering a new Kim Kardashian-produced show about her event planners which just looked terrible and awful and vapid. Yes, they've only shown the pilot and that's not a wholly good estimate of an entire season/series, but it was a really bad show that will probably be green-lighted. It's this whole "go down with the ship because we've got lifeboats waiting for us" mentality. I think. It's late and I'm rambling.
