Futurama is officially back!

Post by neshcom »

So, the renewal of Futurama was tonight. The premiere on Comedy Central, the show's new home, featured two new episodes, a conclusion to Into The Wild Green Yonder called "Rebirth" and a new regular-style episode.

"Rebirth" was a little stilted and kind of a neat and tidy ending to ITWGY, but the new stand-alone episode seemed to retain more of the original charm of the show than the commercials and terrible voice-overs on the commercials would lead you to believe. Everyone sounds like they should and the plot is not disappointing. The plot is a little more grandiose and wide-framed than older episodes have been (like the holophonor or sewer mutant episodes), but this is hard to compare from one episode. I just hope that they aren't all "world's about to end" plots. The characters all seem to act exactly as they should and the voice acting is spot-on.

Did you watch the premiere? Did you laugh heartily?

It was leaked on Torrent Tuesday so I watched it early. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' /> It was awesome.

I loved it so much. I did find Leela's voice was a bit off during Rebirth though, but Sagal isn't a trained voice actor like the rest of them so it probably took her a bit longer than them to get the original voice back (Leela's voice is just slightly higher-pitched than her own) -- which she did in time for the 2nd episode.

I'm really glad they didn't press reset on Fry/Leela AGAIN. I would have been so mad.

I actually didn't see "Into the Wild Green Yonder," (was that what was airing before the new episodes began on Comedy Central?) so I was utterly confused about the whole Fry/Leela thing. I was expecting another OMG IT WAS JUST A DREAM moment.

YES I DID LAUGH HEARTILY.

Especially Bender and the satellite. That was the best part.

Coma-coma-coma-chameleon was my favorite part. I still cry with laughter thinking about it.

Too bad the first episode has been the only good one. Very disappointing so far, which is odd since the three movies were pretty good, but these new episodes just aren't that funny.

My favorite of the new eps has to be the Proposition Infinity one. Even though the concept of Amy and Bender having sex is just *wrong*.

Well, I finally got around to watching the new episodes (although now I need to watch the fifth). Luckily we're already past the worst Futurama episode ever written, so it can't get worse. The third episode was horrible. Not even mentioning that the entire plot was a cliche about Apple followers and twitter (two things which I normally agree with, but it was clumsily handled as a basis for an entire episode), the show was terrible. Continuous goat vomiting? A singing boil? Just because they're on Comedy Central now, doesn't mean they need to use the writing techniques of Drawn Together.

The first episode has been the best so far, but the others have given me amused giggles at least.

There has definitely been a rough patch in these new episodes, but each episode (haven't seen the newest one yet though!) has had a few glimmering moments of the show's original charm. If we can return to the original feeling of the show, it will not be for a while. They need to return into their old mindset, if that's possible.

I was thinking about Futurama earlier tonight and the show that I fell in love with (on syndication) was originally broadcast ten years ago. The show's revival is definitely an effort to steal some of those precious Adults 18-34 years old from Adult Swim; it's being brought back because of cult response and we could get a show filled with fan-fodder or an attempt at re-creating what was great 7-10 years ago. Or who knows, maybe it'll be everything we all wanted all this time.

So, last week's Da Vinci episode sucked. There was too much emphasis on Fry being dumb. Overall, a convenient, plot-hole-filled story about life lessons and such.

This week's Bender's mortality episode was not only convenient, but I called the twist about 5 minutes in. Plus, the twist and final sequence were just an attempt at re-creating that type of sequence from when Leela found out about her parents not being aliens earlier in the series. And I thought Bender was born fully-grown? And why would the writers think we care about Hermes' actions? And didn't Bender come to Planet Express with Fry and Leela, not with Hermes? And why would Hermes quit Mom's from keeping a defective robot? And how could Bender go his entire life without realizing he didn't have a backup? And why couldn't Bender just backup somewhere else or get a unit installed?

It seems like this season has been focusing on teaming up two characters for a main plot. Leela and Zapp, Bender and Amy, Fry and the professor, and now Bender and Hermes. THIS IS NOT GOOD WRITING GUYS. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /noway.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

Bender aged backwards just like the rest of them in "Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles" episode.

It took Family Guy a few seasons to start sucking after their return. I was hoping to get the same from Futurama, but no dice. This shit isn't even as good as current episodes of The Simpsons.

Avoiding this like the fucking plague. Why did they insist on reviving this? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

I liked this week's episode, but I can agree that the overall season has been a bit of a let-down. Their episode ideas are getting more and more grandiose, but are ending up watery because they need to make the episodes for cheaper and faster. Again, this past episode split the cast, but it didn't present sub-plots, just a large story. There's no intricacy in the script. Without sub-plots, we get resolve only at the very end, there's no interplay and we don't find that multiple smaller stories meet up to create more than they were. It's all just...elementary.

Not only that, but they're settling for the obvious joke now, whereas they far more clever in the past.
