X Japan

Post by eri »

So X Japan finished their debut at Lollapalooza and announced their tour dates:

* 9/25 - Los Angeles

* 9/28 - Oakland

* 10/1 - Seattle

* 10/3 - Vancouver

* 10/6 - Chicago

* 10/7 - Toronto

* 10/10 - New York

I'm going to the MUSE concert in SD on the 23rd and can't cough up another $150 to go to the LA show. This makes me very sad....

Anyone else like X Japan? They are legends.

Absolutely.

But I don't consider them the same band without hide.

Yes. They were one of the bands I first listened to when I got into Jrock. I used to use their english songs to try and get people into their stuff ehehe. They're playing nowhere near me, how sad. .

I know hide and Yoshiki composed most of the songs, but I think the loss of Yoshiki would be worse than hide. hide was a huge part of the band, for certain, but I think Yoshiki is the heart of their sound moreso. So, they are not the same without hide, but I don't think we should write them off because hide is gone (rip)

I feel the same. Though I kind of agree with Petit Melon a bit too - I would go to an X concert now if I could get there, but I definitely wouldn't go if both hide and Yoshiki were gone.

New York isn't terribly far for me to go, if I had a friend to drive up with and split hotel costs for one night. But by myself, the expense would be a little much.

I feel like Yoshiki is really the anchor of the band, so I can still follow them without feeling guilty. Besides, they've got that cute little guitarist now from Luna Sea.

I'm going to try and convince my husband to get crappy seats. I don't know what acoustics are like at the Wiltern but surely it will be okay. Besides, they aren't hot so I don't feel the need to get all up in front row and scream and all that fun stuff.

How popular is X Japan in Japan? What kind of group in the U.S. would be comparable in popularity?

Very, very popular but not mainstream I believe. They have icon status, probably because Hide died so abruptly and they have not been very active in years. I feel like a good equivalent might be Queen...but I'm not old enough to remember Queen's reception in the 70s so...

Here is an English article that might explain it better:

I think Metallica would be a good comparison. They got as popular as Metal can get I'd say.

Re: X Japan's popularity: Rock Band Japan, which is still very forthcoming, was supposed to have a brand new X Japan song IIRC, but I think that news was REAL old and the song may have been released anyway. Maybe. Fucken Q Entertainment can't keep up with RB/RB2/RB3.
